This school is just a huge joke- most teachers don't even pay attention to student's specific needs whatsoever; In fact the teacher aides won't do jack! It seems more like they're being compensated to be on Facebook or Twitter all day. I've transferred since & I don't regret making that decision

I am a current junior and I am so proud to say that I attend Marina. As a freshman, I didn't really enjoy school much but after getting involved & challenging myself with rigorous courses, I have learned so much valuable life lessons & skills. I am so glad I did not switch to a different school. The teachers, especially honors & AP teachers, are passionate about their job. They all are willing to help me whenever I need help, whether it be before, during, or afterschool. The library is always open so if your child has a hard time focusing at home, they can go into the library to do work. There is usually an english & math teacher available in the library to help out the students. I find my teachers this year to all be very qualified and always willing to help me. The planning Mondays are also nice (an extra hour of sleep)! The principal is also amazing. There are a lot of clubs & extracurriculars. Our school has gained a lot of school spirit in the past few years. Looking forward to a great year ahead of me & the best senior year ever! Wooot wooot

I transferred my daughter from Pacifica High to Marina. What a difference. Her grades are up, the teachers that she has care, the principal is great and she enjoys school again. We have no problems here plus they care more about academics and help all students during class time where it belongs.

Marina has the BEST principal in the world. Yea! Dr. Morrow. They have great acivities including an improv team and a surf team.

The principal is excellent. He is also a former champion surfer. This school is going to get ahead with the new leadership. The AP and honors program will give your child a top quality education. I have two kids in this school and I am very impressed.

I have been a volunteer at marina since 1996, my oldest child graduated in 2000 but I stuck around until my son entered and then decided the school was so good, I keep volunteering. without parent volunteers any school would be difficult. the budget cuts alone make school a laughing stock. Marina is one of the best and when my son graduated in 2010, I will continue to support the school because it is part of my community and the admin and teachers truly care about our kids. YOU GO MARINA - I am fortunate to have found this terrific school.

I am the parent of a current junior at Marina with another child starting in the fall. I have been more than thrilled with the educational experience that my daughter has gained in her 3 years so far at Marina. And in response to a parent that posted a comment about the cheer/song program falling apart - I beg to differ. The reason it fell apart last year was due to parents that did not want to pay up monies owed and participate in the program. Lack of funds lead to lack of activities for all. This year the program is back on track and becoming stronger than ever as a competitive team.

My daughter has been to Huntington Beach High School as well as Edison High School (both area schools) but she has finally found the right school at Marina. The staff and teachers have really been great for her as well as their extracurriculars. If your child is interested in cheer/song I would consider another school hovewer because their program has really fallen apart. As for the new administration it seems like they are really trying to connect with their students.

In the past year this school has become a joke. The administration is rude and self rightious, If you are a young parent then forget getting anything but judged. Some teachers are helpful while others believe that all students should be responsible and parents shouldn't be involved at all. Nevermind that some of these students are 14 years old. These people need to realize they are dealing with humans and not mindless cattle that they can just herd around without any questions asked.

Marina High School has a large number of outstanding teachers. I am a parent of an '06 and '07 graduate. Every year, they have had at least two excellent teachers. They care about their students, know their subjects well, and are dedicated professionals. Steve Roderick is a hands-on principal. You will see him at numerous school functions, parent organizations and sporting events. It is apparent he takes great pride in his school. There is a place for any parent who wishes to get involved!

MHS has improved over the last two years tremendously. A high quality of the academic and the extra curricular programs have driven student and API scores higher for 2006.

Guidance Center needs improvement, staff is very friendly, but not always able to answer parents questions. Many times when you call, it may takes weeks for them to return your call. When the call is returned, they often do not have an answer. Many parents that I have talked with complain that they have not even recieved a return call.

Marina high schools has great education, however, the music and sport program is greatly flawed due to the academic presure and competition amongst the students. The visual art program is not bad, it is considered to be a good program. The level of parent involment is greater than most schools, and marina has the least amount of distruption, and distraction from gangs and drugs.

It is an upper class academic school for the Huntington Beach High School District. The extra ciricular programs are well organized and available to anyone who wishes to have them. There is high parent involvement which is always good to have the extra help.

When we planned to move to HB I spent hours and hours searching the web to find the best school in the area so we can start looking for a house in that particular area. I found this school through this website and all the information and the scores indicated it is a good school. Unfortunately I don't see it, after my son being in this school for the second year, I don't see a solid program at this school for any of the advanced students, no solid program to pass students or school's information to the parents (e.g.. news letters, flyers). Today I got really disappointed after reading the email I got from this website showing the new low test performance from last year, I hope this school will find a bettre way to go back and be from the best school in HB.

This school is great if your child is focused on learning, but if not then there are some students at this school that will nudge your child to go down the wrong path. As for the teachers most of them are the best teachers.

MHS has been a wonderful school with exceptional instructors. [My son] has been blessed to have instructors there seem to genuinely care about his success at school and in life. I found the school on the internet before relocating from Florida back to California. It's proved an exceptional school for us!

About the tests


In 2011-2012 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
