INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I had the chance to send my son to any HS in the District and I chose Ocean View and after 4 years I will make the same choice for my Daughter. The school is great and the Principal is fantastic. I never had a problem with any teachers or other students. Unlike the larger schools in the area your student is treated like a real person and not a just a student ID number. I have no regrets about choosing this school for my children to attend.

I am a teacher and parent, and while I could send my three children to any school in the district, and have in fact worked with all schools in the district, Ocean View is the best and only choice for us. This school has changed my son's life. He began struggling to pass classes and uninterested in sports or clubs. Now he's competing at the varsity level in two sports, progressing in the skills he was struggling with, and has made friends with so many different types of kids. Kids are welcoming and accepting, and teachers are loving and supportive. Our principal and administrative staff know kids by name and the principal says he loves them every day in the announcements. Kids are intolerant of bullying. I've worked here for fourteen years, and while yes, we do have low income areas that feed into the school, and many language learners which lowers our test scores, safety from crime and violence has never been an issue for me. Kids are respectful and caring, of each other and their teachers. Students are encouraged and supported in taking rigorous honors courses and enroll in college. My son and my family love this school, which is why it absolutely deserves a five star rating.

After four years at this school, I never had a single problem getting involved with sports, academic programs, and clubs. As an I.B student who did basketball for two years and was involved with student government and business academy, as well as multiple other clubs, I can say I truly had the best high school experience a kid could ask for. No regrets. Best years of my life.

I am currently attending Ocean View and am a member in various clubs, Business Academy, IB, AP, and the band. Everyone here is really close. This school also has a good Chinese program and were able to visit China with the teacher. The band is all super close with each other and welcomes new members and helps integrate them into the program. I had a lot of fun in the band and felt really welcomed and see new people coming in each year also being welcomed with open arms. Our principal tells us he loves us all the time. It's a good school; although there are some flaws like any other school.

Ocean Views IB program is growing and the Business Academy program is also an excellent as well. The aquatics program at Ocean View is also rising in the ranks, with the construction of the new pool in 2011. Ocean View's principal has moved Ocean View towards a more rigorous college prep program. Only college prep approved courses are offered now and more students are taking AP exams. Overall, Ocean View is a good school with helpful staff.

The school has a bad reputation, which is for the most part, is untrue. There is no major drug problem here, it exist but it's insignificant which is more than most school can say. The AP/IB program is a noncompetitive programs, where your seat in the class is not at risk every semester like Fountain Valley. Also, almost any students can join any sport. The school however, mostly, is extremely unmotivated to achieve their potential. Only a small portion of students are motivated to do anything. The ASB is possibly the only clique at our school.

I really enjoyed Ocean View. It was a place where I was able to grow and find myself. The size of this school is ideal for learning, and the IB program is great for preparing students for college. This year, we had a many students (not just top ten) accepted to top tier schools including Cornell, Rice University, UCLA, USC, Northwestern, Notre Dame, and more. Additionally, more kids were accepted into UCLA than Huntington Beach HS (even with half the student body) this year which signifies the rise of OVHS. The principal, Mr. Bryan, is doing amazing things. He has encouraged students to take more difficult classes and raise the API score (which colleges use to determine the strength of a student's GPA). He is a walking role model considering he himself is working toward getting his doctorate degree. OVHS is not perfect; we do not boast the best football team in the city or have the most spirited student body, but we are definitely not a school to be overlooked. As for drug use, OVHS is on the lower end compared to other high schools in the city. In my four years, not once has there been a large drug issue or police search. Overall, Ocean View is now a top high school in HB.

Ocean View High School is just one big family, everybody talks to each other and there's always something to do. When i was a freshman I went to China with a bunch of juniors and seniors, they showed a lot of respect towards me even though they just call me a freshman. The principal here is AWESOME!! He cares about his students and teaching staff. When we have announcements he always says "Take the road less traveled and I love you" I'm a student athlete, and if you're interested in a sport there's no tryouts needed, as long as your interested and willing to work hard in the sport you're on the team.

The absolute best school in the huntington beach unified school district. I sent my son here despite other parents trying to convince me that other schools, such as marina or huntington, were better, and after four years, I stand by my decision 100%. He participated in both business academy and the international baccaleureate program, both of which are unavailable at any other school in the district. From these, he was able to recieve an outstanding amount of preparation for his future. One of the many good things about Ocean View its small size, so it's easy not only to get personalized help from teachers, but also to achieve a high student rank. Not to mention, participating in the IB program gave my son recognition at top colleges across the country that I don't think he would have gotten had he not been involved with it. Indeed, as with any high school, there are the groups of students with little ambition and no consideration for their future. However, at ocean view, exclusive programs such as IB, Business Academy, and various clubs have allowed my son to rise above those groups, and ultimately get on track for a great future.

I came to this school as a freshman believing that I had been excluded from my friends and would not fit in where my ethnicity was dwarfed by a large latino population, until I discovered how caring the staff and student environment here truly is. Though my grades were poor at the beginning of the year, once my teachers took me into after school discussion and asked how my experience here could be made better, I began to realize how much the staff truly cares about the students. Since Mr. Bryan came to Ocean View, the school has changed enormously, and as a senior about to graduate, I can definitely say that Ocean View has positively influenced me for the better. A combination of its unique programs like International Baccalaureate and the Business Academy as well as College opportunity programs such as AVID contribute to the family atmosphere that the staff has helped make. The WASC Committee recently evaluated Ocean View, and they were dazzled by its warm and comfortable atmosphere, with the member evaluating school atmosphere saying he would send his child to Ocean View. Ocean View's motto, "You can't spell Love without OV" is no understatement, and Ocean View is a great school.

Despite what some of the more scathing posts have suggested about Ocean View, this school is very unique, and in a good way. The principal Mr. Bryan is the most positive person I have ever met and has definitely revolutionized the culture of Ocean View. In fact, Mr. Bryan has raised the overall academic performance index at Ocean View. As a current IB/AP student, I can say that the IB/AP students make up a very intelligent and special group. With the small school size, the opportunities are endless for students. The IB program presented me with the opportunity this past summer to live on a South African game reserve and work with environmental scientists for two weeks, while having all expenses paid for by way of a scholarship from a foundation the IB program partnered with. The experience was truly once-in-a-lifetime, and I have only the IB program and the Picerne Foundation to thank. OV also presents students the unique opportunity to participate in any sport without being cut. This year, many students made it into top universities like UCLA, which is only a testament to the spirit of the students who go here. Be a part of a school that is on the rise and something special.

Ocean View is one of the smallest schools in the district, making it a very close knit campus and community. The principal is phenomenal, absolutely the happiest man on campus- always telling kids that he loves them. The staff is helpful and always determined to improve the learning environment and curriculum. This school just passed its WASC review with flying colors and remarkable reviews. The hateful or derogatory comments below are inaccurate and written out of spite. The students are very active and involved on campus because they are given every opportunity available, despite financial situations or background. The school is known for its stereotypical Hispanic population and while it's true that we have a large amount of Hispanics, it's also true that we are proud of every student on campus. Ocean View is a wonderful school and it deserves more than five stars.

The teachers are friendly and the small campus makes it easier to interact with people. There isn't some strict social hierarchy and there are plenty of clubs that make going to this school really fun. Though the IB/AP classes are difficult, there is a lot of support for students to get from the school's staff.

Ocean View is a special place. Not many high schools have the same family atmosphere, rigorous academics, and diversity that this one has. It is a school that has constantly improved with more AP/IB classes with kids and teachers who are successful. Even those that take college prep courses are challenged in their coursework. We have opportunities here that other schools in the district and county don't have. This is a place where you can fit in and belong. You can explore your passion and find what you love to do. We take the road less traveled and test scores/ratings don't always tell the true story. As a student, I enjoy being here and will miss OV when I graduate.

Its a shame to see some of these comments, especially since there's no verification or justifications for them. The environment is friendly and generally positive. In my 3 years at OV, I haven't had or seen any negative encounters between students or staff. The IB and AP programs are well run, and the school is genuinely interested in offering classes that students want to take, recently adding AP Chem and AP Environmental to the list, as well as IB HL math. Finally, the extracurriculars are much more inclusive, with a smaller student body size and no-cut sports in several areas creating a larger opportunity for first-time sports players, and clubs such as Film Club and OV Robotics, which are involved in much larger events like film festivals and the FIRST organization. Overall, I've seen a much more positive response from students at OV about their school than students from other High Schools in the area.

Ocean View High School is wonderful. The IB program and the BA make the school special. It has a wonderful student culture and the smaller student body allows students to participate in more school functions, sports, and clubs than at large sized schools. On a side note, the Chinese program is also wonderful!

Attending Ocean View High School was the best decision I have ever made. The staff is incredible, they pay attention to the students and try especially hard to make sure each and every one succeeds. The smaller number of students makes it an easy environment to meet new people and make friends in. The sports are fantastic and everyone is able to participate in some way whether they have never played or have complete experience. The new pool was a great addition to the school and the campus is all around very clean. Ocean View offers the AP/IB program to help kids excel in their academics and pushes them to work hard. There is also Business Academy, ASB, El Viento and a variety of other clubs anyone can participate in. I really have enjoyed my experience here and would never change schools. The people I have met here have had a positive impact on my life and the staff are amazing role models for their students. Overall Ocean View is a school I would highly recommend, everything about it is amazing and the school is like one giant family.

Ocean View has an great student unity. I have always felt safe and welcomed on the Ocean View campus. There are great teachers who really care about every individual student and want them to succeed. The Business Academy, an elite three year program, has taught me many skills including public speaking, the use of Quickbooks, MS Excel, and creates good networking opportunities to keep contact with executives of companies. There are many wonderful programs and opportunities available at Ocean View High School.

There have been many experiences that I have obtained from attending Ocean View. It was very tempting to avoid this school from the fact that is the time it takes to get to the school itself every day, but so far I have yet to regret something from the great decision I made three years ago. The school itself offers a variety of =opportunities for anyone to enjoy a great time. Various programs, clubs, and higher level classes create such diversity. The small campus allows for newcomers to not have a rough time integrating into the the family that is Ocean View. We are the only school that provides the International Baccalaureate, which gives students who wish to pursue a higher leave of education above AP level courses to do so. Truly a great opportunity for anyone and I both dread and long the final chapter that this school holds for me next year. GO seahawks!

[Ocean View,] I've met some really great people at here, not all, but most. I like the volleyball program, track and field program, and IB program to help the students to achieve more. All in all, it's a good school, it may have a few flaws, however, so does everything else in this world. It's well-rounded in both academics and other extra-curricular programs such as sports and band. The staff has been friendly and helpful and I honestly see this as a very good school and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I enjoy going to Ocean View because of all of the opportunities I am given to join in on school activities. I am currently in my third year here, and I've done sports in all seasons all three years. We really benefit from being a small school because the teams are all basically no-cut. If you want to do something, go for it! You're allowed to here. There isn't a drug problem like at other school. I hear stories all the time about other schools' drug problems, and I am thankful that I go to Ocean View. The staff really tries hard to make sure you succeed. I have been involved in AP classes since sophomore year, and my teachers didn't just teach the subjects, they taught me how to study in a way that works for me. Everyone is really nice; there are cliques, but everyone has their own clique. "You can't spell 'LOVE' without 'OV'" is the most emphasized policy of Ocean View; and it really is true.

Ocean View High School is an amazing school. It has opportunities for everyone. Containing both the International Baccalaureate and Advance Placement classes, it gives students the chance for a rigorous education. The teachers help in all classes. They do their best to give us the best education. In athletics, no one is turned down, even for money issues. The music department is fantastic, having a great band and choir. Students in the music program are taught personal music skills and ensemble skills. There are many clubs at our school. They vary from robotics to red cross. This school also has a career center. This place prepares us for life after high school. It helps kids find jobs and scholarship opportunities as well as finding the right college for each kid. I could not imagine a better school.

I have worked at OVHS for 10 years and have been to many high schools in Orange County and LA County throughout my career. Without hesitation, I will say that is the best school I've ever worked at. The students are the most well-rounded and the school environment is a breeding ground for improvement and self-empowerment. The staff and teachers will go above and beyond for students and families and have the strongest commitment to the community as a whole. People mistakenly judge a school by their standardized testing scores (API) and this is only a small piece of how successful a school really is. Students are challenged daily to push themselves and take challenging classes that will boost their self-concept. The support for all students is incredible in all areas. Superficial reviews are only harmful and once you take the time to meet with staff at the school, you'll see how inaccurate they can be. Go Seahawks!

I graduated in 2011. I will always defend OVHS not only because I went there, but because it truly is a great school. The fact that it's a small campus with less then 2,000 students makes it all feel like one big family. You get to know a lot of the students. All the teachers were excellent and only wanted the best for everyone. Never once was I offered any illegal substance in the 4 years that I was there. Something that I really loved was how spirited it was. ASB was great at putting together rallies and involving everyone during the week of it. I liked that during lunch, they would play music and sometimes play games on the upper patio. The new principal made it a point to tell us he cared and loved us every single day during morning announcements. Don't believe all the negative things you may hear about Ocean View High School. I had the best 4 years of my life there. Go Seahawks!

As a student that attends Ocean View high i can honestly say that it is the best school i have attended. The teachers here are amazing and they always have time for any question you have. I have heard from many students that they feel safe and like they can be themselves here at ocean view. What surprises me is the fact that there are hardly any cliques at this school. Everybody talks to everybody and that's just the way it is at ocean view. I go to this school and i don't see a "bad environment". I have had so many good memories at this school, I really am going to miss it! SEAHAWKS!

If you are able to, it would be a very good decision to send your child to another school. So many children have such potential, but if put in the wrong environment it all goes away. My child is suffering from depression because she feels as she is unable to join sports, clubs and IB&AP courses due to cliques. Many of the High Schools in Huntington Beach are the same, so we're considering Westminster, Pacifica, and Loara, as they also have a small campus (but it's a friendly one).

Becoming a part of this High School was probably one of the worst decisions I could make. The utter disrespect from the students is completely unfathomable, and the rest of the staff as well. Very disorganized with education. This is more like a day care for 16 year olds.

The school is small, which used to be great, but the resources seem to be wasting away. They have several classes that are overbooked, specifically, their science classes. This year, there is a wait list for physics. Other classes only have one option, conflicting with each other so students may not get their requirements (they recommend adult school for these classes). Shouldn't a school provide the educational requirements necessary to help you get into college?

My kids love this school!! All three of them are involved in sports and the IB program. As a parent I would highly recommend this school. It is smaller, has more resources, great teachers, challenging programs and FANTASTIC Kids. I researched all the high schools available in Huntington Beach for my kids and decided to opt out of our home school and send them to OVHS. The best decision for my family. GO SEAHAWKS!!!

I am a student here at OV and this school is unique and is the underdog in the district. We are smaller and that results in different schedules but more student-teacher time. My teachers truly want to see success from everyone and that goes for all the teachers. Instead of being treated like a number I am a learner who is being supported and challenged every day. The principal is phenomenal, and really cares about everyone he wants us to work hard and values each student. My friends who go to different schools in the district tease me for coming here. I don't know why when we are smaller, have a brand new Olympic sized pool, new classrooms, new rubber track and home of the International Baccalaureate program in HBUHSD. I feel proud to be a sea hawk and look forward to coming here every day. This school is one of the most diverse I've ever seen and students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and stories. We have an awesome foreign language program with nice and understanding teachers. Every class is challenging and rewarding. I wouldn't want to go to high school anywhere else. You can't spell LOVE without OV and our principal told all of us "I love you".

If your child is not a follower, then this is your school. This especially includes 'quiet' children with good grades and outstanding citizenship. Although hard working administors and teachers are present, counselor is unprofessional and will enable your child to follow the bad crowd (drugs, promiscuity, shoplifting) that you will work hard to remove them from if not remove them from this high school altogether. Huntington High is a much better experience (especially if in APA) yet private school would be your best option for a good education coupled with higher social norms.

I attended this school and can only pray that it is better than it was when I was there. They don't have their own pool which is ludicrous considering the money/income of most of the surrounding area. The teachers that were there were some of the worst in the district and absolutely no involvement in their students lives or future careers. Most of the land used for PE, track, football, etc. has been developed into a Costco now and there wasn't enough to begin with. More than a dozen classes are taught in 'portables' basically poorly built mobile homes. The students are too close to strip malls which are directly across the street of Warner and Goldenwest and make it far too easy to 'ditch' or avoid school in general. I don't think I've ever been at a worse school and anyone can graduate.

I love how safe I feel at my school. I am a senior and have witnessed not more than one fight, which is unheard of, by my friends who go to other schools. I love how involved you can get with going to dances and to the different sport games. They have special assemblies and different school activities through out the year like International Week (learning about different cultures), Yellow Ribbon Week, (suicide prevention), Red Ribbon Week (Drug prevention), Talent Show, International Bachlaurette (excuse my spelling) as well as an array of different clubs including Friday Night LIve (drug prevention), Key Club (community servince), California Scholarship Federation, Peer Asistance Leadership, Yearbook, and so many more the list is endless, and if they don't have the club you like, you can add more. Plus the sport teams are amazing (many go to cif) and you are sure to make the team.

I was a student and a parent at OV. OV has the safest campus in the district and the teachers are caring, involved and easy to communicate with. Give the school a call and find out for yourself-then try it at other schools...don't just belive what I say, check out how the students themselves rate the school at the district office. As a parent I am happy to see the students feel they are safe in their own school. Please don't be deceived by the fact that we have one of the lowest socio-economic areas in HB who attend OV, they are involved and acheivers! Opportunities for all students is a big plus. It would always be great to have more parents involved, but the parents who take leadership positions are extremely committed, and include many alumni long after graduation!

I have 2 daughters who have been at OVHS. The small community atmosphere allows for teachers and students to have good communication. Sports programs are available, but specialize in boys basketball and baseball & girls volleyball. Zero tolerance policy for drugs, gangs, violence etc is enforced strictly. OVHS is a muti cultural school with a blend of economic levels as well. The school could use some help with more parental involvement. Back to school nite has good participation. Parking and drop off/pick up access could really use some work...it is a nightmare for parents still transporting their students to and from school. Also tough training ground for new drivers. All in all a good, safe environment for learning.

All my children attended Ocean View. The education they received prepared them for life after high school. Like any school, there are exceptional teachers and a few who taught the basics, but teachers, staff and administration, all present a supportive, diverse, caring, safe environment for their students. This attitude is reflected in their students, great, caring students. It is a small school with less then 1500 students. Extra-curricular activities are available to all students. There are fewer students to go around; so sports coaches and teachers often shared players. Our children played sports and did the music program. The coach and band director made arrangements so they were able to do both. Parents are encouraged to get involved. Music, art and sports are there for those interested, but these programs, like parent involvement, rely on the level of commitment of participants. We loved OV. It was like our own private school. Our kids thrived.

I am a former student from ocean view high school class of 2005 and this school was the best to me we have great sports great class and super teachers. Teachers that are fun to have as teachers and teach very well. If you need something they got it. Even though its not the best school in the world it is to me and i had many GREAT memories here and i wish i could stay a little longer but time moves on. Hope your child will too.

I have found that the school is committed to helping your child achieve. I have found that communication between staff and pupil is good. Although the school is not ranked high in comparison with other High Schools, I feel that the academic and sports programs are strong.

There are not enough books to go around. The class sizes are too large.

I am not a parent, but I did graduate from Ocean View in the class of 1998. I have many fond memories from this school and hope that it comes to mean as much to future students as it has to me.
