This is our third year at Harbour View. Initially, I was apprehensive about sending my child to a public school. The quality of education has been top notch. There is something for everyone here at Harbour View. There is a strong GATE program. Harbour View offers extra programs: robotics, Spanish, band, chess, and art classes. The classes have been challenging, the teachers are excellent. The principal, Mrs. O, is positive, upbeat, and willing to go the extra step. She is accessible and concerned if there is a problem. Harbour View is one of the largest elementary schools in the district (over 800 students). However, it has a warm small-town vibe to it. After school, you will find parents and children playing and chatting on the playground. Parent volunteers are always welcome. You have the opportunity to be as involved as you wish. 70% of the students are from the Huntington Harbour area and 30% lie about their address. Harbour View does have a population of ESL students, but they are hard-working and eager to improve their lives through education. We are getting the same education at Harbour View as we would have at one of the local Huntington Beach private schools.
I tried to review 2 months ago. Apparently it wasn't posted or it was asked to be taken down by the staff. Typical of this staff. My child is scarred for life, as am I. Some teachers are flat out discriminatory to some students; if your mom isn't rich and stays at home, forget consideration from 3rd grade team. I had a teacher that didn't even know me treat me horribly because she was friends with a mother I did not get along with. Unprofessional at best. I've had the principal specifically say bad things about another student to me! Don't trust your child's emotional well-being to this school unless you are equally backstabbing. I wish I never had my child there.
This is my daughter's second year attending Harbour View. The staff are compassionate but set strong boundaries to develope these kids into wonderful contributors in society. There is an abundance of parents that volunteer and the PTA has really set the bar high for others schools to follow. My daughter is proud to be a Pelican!
NIGHTMARE! ms O is the WORST principle! My kids went to HV for 3 yrs. Both my children were bullied, if you report it they down play it and do nothing! ms O is RUDE and EVIL to most of the kids! She does NOT return calls or reply to emails! We are talking about a SMALL elementary school here! My kids 3rd grade teacher ms goldbach told my son in earshot of adults what a horrible job he did in his 3rd grade school musical! She told him that if she knew he was going to be so horrible that she would have never allowed him to be in it! Who does this?! I lit her up with emails and cc'd Ms O with a less than acceptable apology from goldbach (I refuse to capitalize her name) and NO response from O! I overheard ms O speaking badly about a parent over a walkie talkie! She kicked my child out of an after school science class with NO valid reason! Because she said so! She feeds on negativity and is on some sick power trip! She has made my 2nd grader cry after yelling at him in front of a bunch of other students! Guess what my kids changed schools, now 1 is a straight A student in advanced classes with a 4.0 GPA and the other not far behind. No more bullying, the school does NOT tolerate it!
The last review couldn't be further from the truth. Mrs. O. is an excellent Principal who cares deeply for the children and parents at Harbour View. She is great with the children, and is always responsive to us when we have needed to discuss something pertaining to our children. The majority of teachers are also excellent.
This school is excellent. The reason for the one star is the principal. She isn't an involved principal. She is rude and condescending to her staff. She is rough with the children and is unapproachable and doesn't return calls. She doesn't even seem to like children or her job. It's super disheartening when she has an awesome staff behind her.
I'm rating this school five stars because Mrs. Hudson my daughter has an IEP. She really helped her and cared. She was in the pre k ese program. Now she is in kindergarten and excelling. She went leaps and bounds while in Mrs. Hudson care. So sad when she graduated from her class but forever thankful for her heart for these kids. The principal however could take some lessons from her staff. Because they are incredible and she seems to care less about any of it.
If you are a parent who likes your child to have lots of parties and events that take your child out of the classroom for popsicles, popcorn, and other treats, if you have a cookie-cutter child with no special needs and don't really want special services even if your child needs them, and if you are into volunteering and donating money and still being asked for more, then this is the school for you! The kids are great, the parents are great, and even some of the teachers are great! Unfortunately, some of them feel awfully entitled and the principal likes them that way and will back them 100%. So sad, because this school has the potential to be AMAZING!
I have been a Harbour View parent for the past 5 years, and I can honestly say that my childrens' experience here has been amazing. I'm sad to think that this is our last year here, as it is time for my son to move on to middle school. The sense of community and family created at this school, along with the strong academic program makes this an incredible environment for all children. The principal is very visible and involved at all levels. The teachers are dedicated and go above and beyond in meeting the needs of all children. The parent participation and support is also a very strong component of what makes this school stand out. My children love this school and my older child often comes back to visit. Harbour View truly, truly is a Distinguished School in every sense of the word.
My son has attended Harbourview since 1st grade. He has an IEP, but they don't seem to care about the kids that are slow learners. All it is is about funding here. Money, money, money. I feel that if a child has an IEP, which the school gets money for, they should do more than one progress report during the year. The other thing that is sad is if you aren't a PTA mom , good luck if your child shows up in the yearbook. The principal, when you have a concern regarding a teacher, backs her staff and doesn't care about the parents or the students regarding the issues. The Reading in the Wetlands is the most idiotic program this school has as well and if you don't fill it out the kids get a slip and they have to stay in for recess, which s bogus over a 1960's reading program.
My daughter was a student at Harbour View from 1st-5th grade. I was so impressed with the caring, nuturing environment that has been created. The principal is hands on, firsr rate, as are all the staff. They foster creativity, independence, and I love the special programs they offer, from Reading Through the WEtlands, to the monthly assemblies, and Spirit Day. Bravo to one and all..We still have very fond memories of the teachers and time spent there.
My son is a 5th grader and my daughter is in first. I couldn't be more happy with this school. The principal is very involved and an excellent leader. Both of my kids have had excellent teachers every year. Strong curicculum. The students are very diverserse. They have a zero percent tolerance for bullies. High parent involvement. I simply love everything about this school!
This is a well rounded school. I feel that the reading through the wetlands program is a little outdated and wish they would switch to something more comprehension focused like accelerated reader (used at other schools). Beyond that I am very pleased with the principal (all staff) , parent participation, activities, field trips, etc. I am so impressed with the amount of encouragement the students receive for behavior and academics. There is plenty of parking, a/c & heat, a full time librarian, an art program, and I really appreciate that the teachers do not let the students leave until they see a parent (up to 3rd grade). In contrast with some other reviews I have read, my son has plenty of homework sometimes taking him 2 hours depending on the amount of tests he is to prepare for. Also, I have volunteered in RTI and each group varies based on the students ability specifically so that a student who needs more help is not taking away from the independent learner. The best thing about this school is the SMALL class sizes. 24 kids in each class in lower grades. Harbour View also has preppie k and a great after school/preschool/summer camp on campus called Rainbow.
i love the atmosphere and the caring staff. My issue is with the lack of academics. Sure there are going to be kids that have a difficult time picking up certain lessons but there seems to be a large group that struggles. I would think it would be for the betterment of the whole that they place these students in a class of their own. I have worked in class and with RTI groups that could barely read. A fair amount of the kids were ESL but the majority were not. I don't blame the school but the parents at home that should be working with their kids. These kids should be all together in a class that would suit their needs and provide an extra teacher to give those kids one-on-one attention. I just don't want my child to have to sit because the teacher has to go over the lesson multiple times for the benefit of the few. The homework that is given doesn't even take my child 15 minutes to finish which is for the whole week. I also find that when I pick up my kids that they are often outside waiting 5 minutes before the bell rings. My kids are performing well and they have had some great teachers but I feel all would be better served if they worked in groups with similar abilities.
My child is a student at Harbour View. The actual learning in the classroom has been minimal. If you want your child to remain academically competitive, this is not the school for you. The school is in a very nice neighborhood, there are a huge number of volunteers, and there is substantial financial support. If the school placed the same amount of emphasis on academics as they do parties, spirit days and school events, Harbour View would be outstanding.
I'm really not sure how this school maintains a nine rating. I found the teachers to be overwhelmed, class sizes oversized. I never met or heard from the principal that I can recall. I volunteered in the classrooms and found that there were a lot of kids that needed additional help and didn't seem to be getting it. We've lived in a few different states so I can compare the school to others my kids have attended, and I was not impressed with Harbour View. I suppose when you compare it to other schools nation wide it is satisfactory, but I wouldn't consider it a top school.
New to area, New to 5th Grade and totally satisfied so far. Today, we had SPECIAL PERSON/GRAND PARENT DAY it was a total success. My son is having a difficult time due to last year's 4th grade teacher at Enders I as well as so many parents they are happy they got rid of him yet he will became a liability teacher at another school. I am an involved single dad and slowly we will do our best to succeed on this grade. Mr Hammond, Ms Cook, along with Ms Principal are helping me with my son. Totally engaged into learning and helping our students succeed.
We are new to Harbour View, I had my child in a private school for the last three years and was on the fence if he should go to the local public school. It is turing out to be a great call on our part. The teachers, principial, staff and parents participation are excellent. Im glad I made the move.
I cant tell you enough how much i love this school! The teachers and staff are amazing! My son is doing so well here, i cant wait till my daughter starts...
My son has been attending since Sep 09 and I really love this school. The teachers are wonderful, the principal is engaged, all staff seem very organized and there is a happy vibe all around. I'm very pleased with my son's teacher and his class is also a split grade K-1. I also like that he's in full day kindergarten. I highly recommend this school.
