Visit this school yourself before you sign up. There are less than 30 kids at this campus and closing and merging discussions have taken place. Tuition increases every year by 300-500 dollars and the children are suffering for the diminishing budget No sports for girls this year and its limited for boys

My son has been at St. James Holy Redeemer for the past year and a half and we could not be happier. The TK teacher and the Kindergarden teachers are such a blessing and teach their children with so much love and a genuine interest and making sure each child lives up to their own potential. My son attended another catholic school in the area and was behind in his academics. The teachers at his school now have been patient in helping him catch up and he has done so well and has developed into a confident little boy. I do think that the principal, while nice and easy to get a hold of via phone, does need to be more involved on the school grounds. Unless we seek her out, I never see her. Overall I am happy that we chose this school for our son after having seen and experienced what other schools lack in comparison.

Huge financial problems at school. There are probably fifty students at campus and sixty at the other in early classes it may work well for instruction but at older grades the social aspects are huge drawbacks one class has only two girls. The merger that took place is a failure and no improvements are being made. Principal is rarely around and difficult to reach. Long term teachers have been replaced with teachers with none or little experience. Great concern school will close Even the PTO president removed her children from the school.

I have 2 children at St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle school. they love having thier own campus seperate from thier siblings. they had a very positive experience last year and are anxious to get started this year. The staff and teachers are amazing but the most important thing is the parents and families that make up our two schools. They define community! There is nothing but good for our future at these two schools and I couldn't be happier - more important - my kids couldn't be happier - or better educated!!!

Great school, wonderful teachers and nice enviroment. The principal, Mrs. Romero, care about every single aspect , awesome policy about bully , facebook and whatever is important for children. Very good experience for us, parents, and specially for our daugther.

The students are not happy. There is great animosity between the parents of both schools. The school office is very unhelpful. The students work the office. Most of the students are from Holy Redeemer or public schools which causes great strife and behavior problems which the school does not deal with. Many parents are contemplating leaving.

Our paster, Fr. Ed Dover, has combined the schools at Holy Redeemer and St. James parishes into one terrific learning institution (elementary and middle schools) with a wonderful principal and very talented and dedicated teachers. This was done to provide financial stability and a more robust educational curriculum including such things as second language and music programs. As a long time parishioner and product of Catholic education, I commend Fr. Dover for having the courage to make this move. It is proving to be a big success!

This was a wonderful, warm school with a giving, loving principal and a first rate faculty with amazing parent involvement. However a new pastor has taken over and created havoc. He completely changed the school and runs it like a dictatorship. Families can't get away fast enough. They are leaving in droves.

We chose HRS based upon the warmth of this school by comparison to other area schools. A change in parish pastor caused quite a stir. Personalities aside, the new pastor was tasked with responsibility for not one, but two parishes, which time commitments naturally caused a change in administration style and time. Such changes angered some parents, creating a negative influence that, in my opinion, is based upon emotion rather than fact. I recently learned that Holy Redeemer School and St. James the Less would have been on the list of LA school closures, had it not been for the decision by the pastor to merge the two schools, retaining the best educators, and expanding the scope and quality of the curriculum at a time of declining enrollment (due to demographics). My child is receiving a quality faith-based education in an environment in which the children are more respectful and compassionate

Principal Fite and staff are nurturing, well qualified, loving and dedicated. Students are happy and well prepared for an easy transition into high school. New pastor, Dover, is dictatorial, destructive and covert in his decision making that affects the overall sustainability of the school.

I have three children at Holy Redeemer and they have flourished under the love and care that they receive from the teachers and staff. I have been happy with their academic progress. I cannot say enough about the community at our school. The parents are very active and the students are very polite and caring towards each other.

We just completed our first year at Holy Redeemer and we're very happy. Our daughter has learned so much and blossomed socially, she and her classmates are like brothers and sisters. The children are commended wherever they go for their outstanding behavior, and the staff nurture them as if they were their own.

I am currently a sophomore in high school who attented Holy Redeemer from grades K-8. While at Holy Redeemer I had a wonderful time, recieved a great education and made so many life long friends. Sure Holy Redeemer had its faults but then again, which school doesn't? I still vist Holy Redeemer today and everyone continues to accept me with open arms. I feel honored to be an alumni of this school.

I am hopeful that you can find better Catholic or private school education in the area. Some teachers like the math instructor for the middle and upper school is excellent but discipline is a huge issue and ignored. I was truly amazed at the lack of basic Christian attitudes exhibited by some of the kids to each other and will never understand it. This school was a mistake for our family.

Not a bad school, but not five star either. Last year's assistants are next year's teachers. Some great teachers, others ? Problems ignored. Principal lacks leadership and discipline. A few powerful families and kids run the show. Crowded classes. I'm thinking about pulling my daughter out for next year.

Great academic school with large amount of parental involvement in their children's education.

When I first came to Holy Redeemer, it was because my mom and stepdad were moving to South Pasadena from Orange County. I was worried about comming to a new school. I had been happy at Red Hill Lutheran, in Orange County for the past six years. But, the teachers and staff members at Holy Redeemer were so kind and the first day of school was so much fun! It was so easy to make friends with the nicest people. A few of my best friends are at Holy Redeemer now and I love and cherish them. They also have one of the best cheerleading programs in the area. I had the honor of being on the 'A' squad with many other wonderful athletes. Holy Redeemer is an over-all wonderful school.

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
