I'm definitely not impressed with this school. Is it the lack of funding and teacher pride that has made education go downhill? Don't get me wrong, there are a few outstanding teachers here, yet there are a few that I was forced to have a personal meeting with. I grew up in the Midwest, which may impact my perception of educational quality. In one of my sons classes, they no longer follow along to the text book issued as the state supposedly changed the curriculum, skipping some important steps, little homework leading to less repetition, increasing the margin of failure. 25% classwork/homework and 75% test weight (algebra) is quite inappropriate when the lack of repetition in the curriculum. Another class, Language Arts has a faculty member that is very strict and unapproachable and leaving the children not asking for assistance. One more issue that I have is the dress code needs to be enforced better. I will not expect school life to be any better as my son moves onto high school.
My son had Mrs.Hjalmerson last year & she was wonderful. She always encouraged him & she has an extensive art backround which enhanced his English experience. She's AWESOME!!!
The school is o.k. but there is one teacher who is very mean to the students, Mrs. Hjalmerson. Every student i know, who has this teacher is sad that they have her as a teacher. Also the parents don't seem to like her either
This school is awesome I met the love of my life there! But overall it's amazing Parkway just turned 50! Woohoo!!! Bit yeah great teachers, they give amazing help!
My son was at Parkway 6th through 8th grade, and my daughter is now in her second year at Parkway. Overall, we have been very happy. There are many exceptional teachers that do a great job. Unfortunately, there are also some that are just adequate. We did have some issues with bullying but the vice principal and counselors were responsive and it was resolved quickly. Any concerns that I raised to the principal, vice principal, counselor or teachers was addressed promptly and satisfactorily. Sadly, the budget cuts have hurt Parkway as well as all the schools in the district.
The bullying just seems to continue on a daily basis. My niece reports it to her counselor and nothing NOTHING is being done about it. Our own president recently had a forum on bullying so why isnt anything being done to correct it. How do they expect our children to learn when they are treated like this everyday. These students are in the same classroom and the school wont change any schedules. Also if your student is in the last lunch period, the school runs out of food. This has happened more than once.
Since last year, the quality of band has gone down 200% thanks to the unqualified new conductor. The yearbook class let all kinds of honor students in, yet they don't take the best (student of the year). The seventh grade teachers give no warning as to how difficult eighth grade is. The PE program is horrible because there are only three or four coaches trying to supervise a HUGE field, and they don't even supervise. As a student, the only class I enjoy at the moment is history because I have a teacher who explains everything clearly and makes it so we understand the subject. I'm struggling in everything else due to disruptive students and poor quality of the ways the teachers teach. I entered eighth grade totally unprepared for how hard it was.
Excellent academic preparation as well as ppromoting character education.
We are very happy with Parkway Middle School because the teachers really listen to the parents when there is a concern, they always call me back or email me within 24 hours and our counselor Shannon Johnson is wonderful! My son feels very comfortable seeking her out for help and to talk to when he's feeling overwhelmed and she really cares.
Mr. Mollenkopf, the band teacher, has a great program. It's about the only thing about the school we like. The P.E. program is excellent, but try telling the kids that. Academically the place is a mess. The 'House' system guarantees that a student won't have access to the best and most appropriate teachers for that students needs, because sticking with 'house' teachers is more important than student learning outcomes. The principal and counselors are completely disinterested in anything that doesn't involve the dress code or bullying. At least there's no bullying from other students!! I can't say as much for the treatment that parents receive.
My daughter attended Parkway for all of the sixth grade. The school was clean and orderly from all appearances. It came to my attention on orientation day that there were 35 students in my daughters math class. Despite assurances that this would be corrected- by years end there were 39 students. Mr Chase had only 45 minutes to spend with these children each day. Poor judgement by the administration led to willfull overadmittance of students. The school is paid per student. . .you figure it out. My daughter struggled all thru 6th grade math despite two separate tutors and daily parental support. I am anxious to see how student population is affected given the layoffs of 09 in the coming school year.
I was a student at Parkway (2007). It was an amazing school, both because of the faculty and the students. The science classes were always engaging and informational; English was never dull and I learned art history; PE was always fun (this coming from a person who ran a 15-min. mile!); the houses made for amazing friendships (water)! Music was definitely my favorite- Mr. Mollenkopf was funny and a friend, yet still managed to teach a group of pre-teens how to make beautiful music. I moved after I graduated and with my near-perfect grades (valedictorian!) I was accepted to an amazing high school specialized in the medical field, all AP and Honors classes, and the highest level of band possible (Check it out- Health Careers HS in San Antonio). The classes at PKMS prepared me indefinitely and I recommend this school to anyone who wants to have a great 3 years!
We have a completely opposite experience (comparing to the previous review). Our son's elementary school teachers always complained about his behavior. But in Parkway Middle his behavior grades are always outstanding and good. I believe it is because the teachers are really good, they keep kids interested. My son's academic grades were always high in elementary and remained at that level in Parkway Middle. I like how much they have to write for Language Arts class and it is great that the school has different math levels. Web grades are very convenient. You can also e-mail teachers and they always reply fast. I would recommend this school.
My son attended PMS in the 6th grade. He attended a top rate elementary school in the LMSV School District where he was an exceptional student. During the one year at Parkway, his grades went downhill and his behavior soon followed. The teachers and administration did not seem to care and did not support my efforts to get involved and figure out what and where things went wrong. The teachers were stressed out and treated the kids like cattle moving through that classrooms by the hour. I transfered my son to another school and both the teachers and administration immediately worked with me and my son to resolve issues. I am happy to report that he is back on tract and moving on to high school with honors. I would not recommend Parkway!
Most of the teachers have displayed professionalism and a true caring for their students; however, the administration is lacking in those same attributes.
We have had a great experience so far. My son entered 6th grade, so we were a bit nervous. He is in Earth House. The teachers are great, and I particularly love the web grades, where you can go on-line and view their progress. The teachers have been very responsive with my questions. The campus is very clean and well laid out.
Awesome school :D People respect others....Not much bullying(There is at every school o.o) and a positive attitude everywhere! The teachers don't scold you and actually help unlike some other teachers. It also has many events. Again, this is a great school
Our son just started at Parkway this year. I've heard all of the 'stuff' about once your child gets to middle school, the teachers don't want parental involvement, etc. This is just not the case at this school. They not only want parent volunteers, they encourage it and ask for participation at every turn. The school 'house' system (school is divided into four campus' each with it's own set of teachers, a counselor, etc.), makes the learning more intimate and the teachers coordinate on projects and homework, so the kids feel less overwhelmed. It seems that if your child is motivated, they can finish a lot of their homework in class. New fitness facility with rock wall and other equipment. Web grades. Parent/teacher mixers. Very happy staff. Nice kids. Thus far, a very positive experience for our son and us.
I love the web grades and being able to look up what's going on on-line. Each time I've e-mailed one of my son's teachers, they get back to me quickly.
The web grade postings this school offers has been a fantastic tool! We are able to keep up with what our child is doing, as well as how he is doing at all times. WE are able to communiate better with our child about his homework and daily activities. Also, the clubs offered to the children are fantastic. My child is in a different club daily and meets with each weekly. It has been a fantastic outlet for him, a wonderful learning tool, and a way to make friends. The teachers really care about the children and are not there just to collect a paycheck. All of this has resulted in an honor roll child for the first time ever!
