My child has been very happy at this school. I do have a problem with it's disciplinary (unable to attend social functions) actions towards children with learning disabilities that are documented with the school. I will be addressing it with the Superintendent and Principal.
I'll never understand why so many parents here pay for Montessori, when Livermore's K-5 schools are so excellent and use many of the same techniques. Then they enter their kids in public schools that focus on test-taking to the exclusion of all else! Our son is the poster boy for the test phenomenon: does fabulously on standardized tests, getting close to 100th percentiles on STAR; gets D's and F's. They passed him on to 8th, a warehoused, public-school kid. Mendenhall's teachers and staff are saints. They can't teach what they love, only what the Curriculum orders, which they do cheerfully. But if a kid is bright but under-stimulated, he's out of luck in classes that average 31 kids. This is one of the wealthiest districts in the U.S., but many basics are electives that quickly fill up. Principal is overwhelmed. Don't be fooled by these CA 'scores'!
Excellent student body with the support of dedicated parents. Mediocre principal who seems more concerned with the stats than individual students especially students that require extra effort. I feel that is poor professionalism but the school ranks high. As with most Livermore district schools one must advocate for your child and hope for the best. Often it is less effort, time and money to get your child extra help and tutoring than it is to get the school to comply with accomadations. Good school for normal kids and educated parents - also has an excellent program to develop sensitivity in students for others differences. Far less bullying and student on student maltreatment than other middle schools in the district.
Dr. Goldring is an excelent principle and a great leader. She has the right blend of courage and sensitivity. She recognizes problems quickly and resolves them with great sensitivity and finesse. The scores continue to go up and the teachers are part of the result. The are dedicated and remain committed to the success of each child. They also demand alot from their students as these demands mimic real life situations and prepare our children for success in the real world.
