Laurel High (Continuation) School

We are a small (120 students on average) alternative high school. The teachers at our school are all in alternative education by choice. They utilize many forms of learning and attend to the gifted as well as the struggling student. Weekly staff meetings are used to brainstorm ways of helping individual students succeed. Programs are developed to encourage attendance--ie sewing, video production, applied science, taught/packet class variety, and a caring staff who notices each student every day. The support staff is a major strength at the school and provide program support beyond their assigned duties. Our new principal, Mr. Johnson, is young, energetic, and interested in each student and staff meeting. To sum it up, 'We are the best kept secret in Los Alamitos.'

My son had a turbulent 3+ years at a traditional high school with 3,000 students. He was not connected to the high school, didn't participate in sports or other venues. My son realized he needed a change and because his profile was so high, he was walking into many situations that got him into trouble. His GPA was very low. In his 12th grade year, he asked us if he could transfer to Laurel, before he was kicked out of his traditional school. At Laurel, my son attended class, with work packets, so he could work / test / and earn credits as he went along. It couldn't have been better. The staff and teachers were exceptional. The personal attention tremendous. We just attended his graduation last night, on time, with his class. When his teacher spoke about him, you could tell they knew him personnally.
