Our daughter needed some individual instruction during the junior and senior years in several classes. SIL was great -- she really learned the material and she was very comfortable with and enjoyed the teachers. The instructors have mostly been at SIL for a long time - they are very strong and caring teachers, and they customoize their approach to match the needs and learning styles of the students.

Have found the school to be a great resource for a sick child. Teachers are adept at the material they teach, engaging and inspiring for the student. The focus is on MASTERY of the material - not busy work. My child has enjoyed the experience. Good communication and billing straight forward. Broad mix of students, some full time, others part time, and some are there for tutoring. I don't see a lot of parents on site, other than dropping off/picking up of the kids, but this is high school, not middle school or below. However, the school is inviting of the parents asking questions or attending the Friday barbeques where I found some of the teachers playing the drums, guitars, etc in an informal music session. Very positive experience!

My daughter dropped AP at the local high school because it was rote learning. At SIL she had intense intellectual discussions, more reading, less busy work and developed mentor relationships with caring, intelligent and demanding teachers, and she did well on the AP test. AT SIL, she loved learning.

Some people like this school. However, it doesn't require its teachers to be properly certificated, so their not good at understanding the learning needs of all students.

What a flexible and fun school! I'm impressed with the communication and the atmosphere. My son feels safe and happy. It is so good to have him happy again. He actually likes going to school. He likes his teachers and they present the info in a way he can relate to.

Great school, did what they said they would, unlike so many schools who just pay lip-service. Make kids feel safe and able -- they soar. Kids can move quickly and not be held back by administrative stuff or busy work. This keeps them interested and motivated.

My student found academic success at SIL. His teachers were awesome and he said he learned so much more in a week than he did in a year.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

More from this school
  • School for Independent Learners (SIL) is a small, nurturing, non-public high school for grades 6-12. SIL has been granted full accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and all courses have been approved by the University of California. We offer college prep, honors, and AP coursework, as well as standardized test preparation and academic tutoring. Full-time and part-time programs are offered. Many students graduate from SIL, while other students take only one or two classes at SIL and transfer credit to their high school of record. Most of our courses are taught in a one-to-one setting - one teacher, one student. This format provides a tremendous opportunity for fast-paced growth and niche learning. Teachers tailor course content with respect to each student's goals, interests, aptitude, and motivation. A personalized academic program can be created for a student who wants a greater intellectual challenge, for an athlete who needs flexible scheduling, or for a student who feels lost and overlooked in group environments. From start to finish, a course progresses at each student's optimal pace. Despite the flexibility of our courses, we ensure that each personalized course meets (and often exceeds) California educational standards.
