The Lycee provides a rigorous education in a warm caring atmosphere.
LILA is a wonderful school. It is academically rigorous and intimate and friendly at the same time. Our children are learning to be citizens of the world. We could not be happier!
I love the campus staf, teachers, director ,.... this is a save place for my kids to grow and learn 2 languages.
I have a child attending LILA. The teachers are caring and conscientious. The director knows each child by his/her first name. The parents are involved & the academics are rigorous. I am very pleased with the school overall. Whenever I've had any issues or concerns, I've been able to talk to the teachers, teachers' assistants and the director. They are a great group, very hands-on & children-centered, as well as academically-oriented. IF I were to raise any minus points for the school, I would say the lack of more extracurricular activities (esp. sports) and the preschool could be a bit more rigorous. LILA isn't for everyone, but for those of us who value multilingualism, international perspectives, & academic rigor, we Love the school!
Strong academics and extremely diverse. Lacks in after school activities/sports. Strong parental involvement and great leadership at the higher level.
Update to my 3-star review of June 12, 2007. How much longer will this school be open? Parents are starting to pull their kids out as tuition rises, principal remains hostile to parent involvement, and head of school takes paid trips to Paris to recruit new teachers. All this would be tolerable if our kids were learning French... but they don't even speak it on the playground!
Great program: bilingualism is an goal which is attained. The French preschool and school curriculum is very dense and well structured. The teachers are highly qualified.
Great school. Ethnically diverse, good teachers and kids become fluent in french by the 2nd year of preschool even if you don t speak French at home. Provides a very controlled environment for the children since is a small campus where everyone knows each other. Parental involvement is high.
The school has always provided an amazing curriculum and the idea that my kid will be completely bilingual is a major draw. The school is not a perfect fit for all and parents have to understand that the program is guided by the French curriculum. The bang is definately worth the buck as the school is reasonable and the program is strong. Weaknesses here in the past were the administration but I have to say that the new principal this year ia amazing and the whole school has been restructured. As a parent I am thrilled with the progress made and feel that the problems of the past are just that -- problems of teh past!
My child has attended LILA two years and we're pleased enough with the school to continue next year. If you are a non-French speaking American family like we are then the school, technique and staff may take some getting used to so any percieved differences or intial unease may be due to cultural differences. Remember it is a french school so don't expect the American school status-quo standard. We enrolled our child specifically to learn the French language because we feel strongly about all the benefits of being multi-lingual and that's what we are achieving. Some posters have commented on the older grade students possibly not being strong in english but that doesnt surprise since again LILA is a french school. We have no concern of our child not being conversant in english since we live in english speaking America and outside english tutoring is always available if needed.
We did not care for lila. Our daughter attended the tarzana campus and took her out in just 3 weeks. The new principal has poor leadership skills and is completely lost and seems to have no idea what is going on. There aren't any sports. There is never a straight answer for anything. Other parents explained their children in the upper grades were far below average in english reading and writing. The only positive thing is the pta is very involved. I don't recommend this school. Don't believe the hype. The teachers were cold and insensitive and there is no safety.
About the Tarzana campus: for the money, this school blows everything else out of the water. Great, friendly staff, lots of extracurricular activities, and the kids come out bilingual. It doesn't get any better than that. Thanks for making the agony of choosing a school so easy, LILA!
My impresion of this school is that there is no organization and safety is poor as well as security. The principal, in my opinion, he has no leadership skills at all! On the good side, the principal will soon be leaving and children come out fluent in two languages. I give them a 3 in overall quality. As far a parent involvement, I would have to say that is good.
