My daughter will graduate from this school this monthg and I am very pleased with the education she received here. She was coming from a really bad school where she was bullied and the kids at this school accepted and welcomed her with open arms. Ms. Cohen worked really hard to catch her up in with all the assignments during 7th grade. Mr. Codio was very supportive and help as much as he could. You can tell the teachers from all grades work really hard and have so much potential. They are gracious and I never heard any of them screaming at the kids. I really like that. They students are well educated and applied the values really well. Parents should be more involved with the school's activities, In the 2 year there I always saw the same parents, helping and volunteering at the school. There are about 400 kids and only 30-40 parents help over and over again. Parents education start at home, teach your children to volunteer by doing it yourself. If you want the school to change, be the first one to change. Parents Get Involved in your children's education, volunteer at their school!

My kids they have been in this school for 6 years one of then graduated last year for 8th grade and the other is in 6th grade i like this school i have had a good expience. But day care is not free and some times there is no soap or toilet paper also the school needs to be bigger the teachers are really helpfull i think the school also needs lockers for middle school.Good food fresh my kids loved it all the values are follow by every one. Some parents can't pay for day care can it be free like other schools?

I have come to this school for 2yrs(7-8) and every year is the sme the teachers try to cram things not taught ,hstory, into our brains. It's not cool. Over all I can't comlain it is an amazing school don't be fooled by the API score. The 5 values are explified and expected. The principal is always in the office, but not overwheled. Its because of the misbehaving students. Parents pleas your children aren't perfect, that's why she is stuck in there most of the time.

Principal is must be overwhelmed. Why else is the door always closed. Also, Principal and Vice Principal, other office staff take vacation during the school year! Not smart. Some teachers are very good, but don't seem happy with Principal. Afterschool program is not free, many parents do not pay though! Lunch food is good.

it is true principal not bilingual ! they do offer coffee with the principal but parents talk amongst themselves since many don't speak english and she doesn't speak or understand spanish! and she is not in school most of the time must be a part time principal! many claim not to see her everyday or she is at closed doors ! she doesn't seem to know what goes on in her own school ! teachers are OK ! some! but they give a lot of homework! i like that! my teacher is good she is nice and courteous and on top of things ! if you as a parent are on top of things teachers will too. the lot seems a little too small for all the kids they have! teachers do have preferences! not good ! lunches are good! only they dont order extras.

it's a little better than public schools for sure they give lots of homework and don't waste time! principal not often seen in school? wonder why ? vice is always there ! good lunches (warm) no free after school program, no music classes or sports only in after school paid program. =( no parking for picking up kids. and yes staff should have same rules as students or teachers to set an example! they accept cakes for staff, but if it is brought to a class it is sent back! junk food is not welcomed nevertheless they give hamburgers for lunch? or sell pizza to raise funds! the principal is not bilingual. over all is ok just for a few things than can easily be changed hopefully the principal will read some of these comments and improved them.

This is our 1st year here and it seems ok ! except for the day care not being free or the parking. i have notices that the principal doesn't come in to school often or is always at closed doors! many don't see her often. kids get demerit if the wear a non -navy blue sweater ! not enough room for all the kids they have! no parking at all! nice secretary! hopefully next year they'll have more extra curricular activities!

Academicly I can't complain about this school. It's the faculty I'm not happy with. I've seen some of the teachers not reaching out for the kids. There just there for the job, as it seems. Teachers should not not just be teachers but friends too. It's hard for parents to talk to the principle as she takes everything over propotion and jumps with her attitude. We are parents and want the best for our kids and if we can't be heard and be taken into consideration we can not give more.

From the outside this school looks very disorganized. The secretary is very polite and helpful. The principal does not always seem to be in the loop with her staff. The classrooms are very tiny and look like they could be a hazard if there was an emergency. The students seem happy and willing to learn.

Given that this K-8th grade school has been in existence for only 6 years, and that administrators, teachers, students, parents, and staff have extremely limited space and personnel to facilitate academic and school activities and events, we are doing excellent in comparison to other schools in the area. Our teachers work hard including weekends to facilitate extra-curricular activities and tutor students. We have a developing music program and two successful and engaging after-school programs (All Stars & Learning Kids) that run to 6:15pm or later. Special Education services are provided in the school, and we are currently in the planning stages of implementation of the RTI. We have a very structured school with a hard working team that provides a rigorous curriculum to students and use the school values to ensure safety and character development. Parents and students can feel confident that learning and safety are our priority at Downtown Value.

I can only speak on my own experiences, great values, not fair to say parens don't do their share if they don't they have to pay all hours cash min of 45 hours per year of voluntary hours. yes some get to meetings veery late. no parking at all i dont like the uniform policy if the sweater is blue must have the logo if not will be removed and will not be given back! it's ridiculous students should be able to have at least one shirt with logo for field trips, (not all parents can afford to buy uniforms with logo.) is not cheap! as long as students wear a uniform should be OK, but is not. that's about the only thing i don't like about the school. some teachers can be kind of rude sometimes. our teacher is great though.

This is a small and highly structured school for 420 k-8 grade students. The school is full of highly dedicated teachers and hardworking staff that provides a rigorous curriculum, a lot of extra-curricular activities, and a safe environment.

As an experienced teacher I have had a wonderful experience in the school. I recently moved to the Los Angeles area and have truly enjoyed working at Downtown Value School. The parents are wonderful and give their time unselfishly. Teachers, although some are new to the field, are extremely dedicated to the academic and social growth of the children. A lot of work has to be done because the school is relatively new, but there is much hope in the potential of the school.

I can't speak for all the grades, but the grade my son's in (2nd) is pretty mediocore. Friendly teacher, average content. Strong discipline. Guess it depends on the teacher. No special programs avaliable yet. No art, no music, no sports, no soap or toilet paper in the restrooms, used to be no playground. Free daycare though till 6. Parental involvement is supposed to be mandatory (20 hours), but I know not everyone has done their fair share. Principal is frequently gone, not too friendly or accomodating, has a poor memory, and is not bilingual. Definately does not reflect the school's 'Values.' Excellent secretary, on top of things and organized.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.
