New West is an outstanding school both for their middle and high school program. The break the mold of poor quality public education in LA - thanks to their relentlessly hard working Principal, administration team and teachers. With over 1000 applicants this year alone for only a handle full of open admission spots - the only heartbreak for parents is that their is not enough spaces for the enormous demand for entry. Keep up the stellar work New West - but please look at opening up additional campuses across LA!!
Has great potential but seems to lack an understanding about what makes a good high school successful. The principal of the school doesn't show up until late morning or early afternoon. Not available to talk to until then. Really enjoyed getting to know the high school assistant principal of the high school this year but then was told he left. He seemed to understand high school students and connected well with with high school students. The current administration doesn't seem to understand high school students or what it takes to run a successful high school. There seems to be little very little respect from administration to the high school teachers
The word most parents use when talking about their middle schoolers' experience at NWC is "bloom." Kids learn through projects-based curriculum and "simulations" (hands on experience with what they study). They write their own textbooks in each class - my child's notebooks and projects are works of art. Some say the school is too easy, but you won't see me complain that my child does not spend an entire weekend with projects and homework. Kids are engaged in the learning and so creative! Teachers are young, it's true, but I no longer view it as a negative. They are enthusiastic and communicate their passion to the kids. (How often have teachers thanked your kids for a great year in a public school? I can't remember either.) The electives are diverse and rigorous, including classes like speech and debate, languages, art. In addition to academics, the school nurtures adolescents' social and emotional development. Kids are great at the school because they are taught to be great kids. I could see the difference in my child immediately after she transferred to NWC from our local public MS. Two years later, she is a happy, well-adjusted, and highly motivated student.
High-schoolers beware New West Charter High School is a failing experiment. They're a "college prep" with no AP classes. Honors classes are a joke: both honors and non-honors students are mixed together in the same classrooms, taught the same material at the same pace, and are given the same tests, with honors students only being expected to complete an extra project during the semester. They've been unable to keep teachers for the entire school year. In its 2 year history, each year has seen a teacher leave midway through the year. In the ensuing chaos, student work and tests get lost. Very little learning takes place until a replacement is found and has time to figure out where the last teacher left off. The school's API score has suffered. After consistently going up to near record highs, the poorly structured high school has caused the first drop in API score in the school's history. Most telling is the fact that their own college counselor has advised students to find another high school to improve their likelihood of getting into college. NOTE: This review is SOLELY for the high school. The middle school is outstanding and well deserving of its good reputation.
New West is not a supportive learning environment for students who need any special attention. The administration treats Federal law governing students with disabilities as if it were optional. The administration and faculty are shockingly ignorant about even the most common learning disabilities and use the "blame the student" approach that had cruelly prevented so many students from getting the free appropriate public education every American child is entitled to . Like so many charters they accept federal dollars ear marked for Special Education but fail to actually educate the students the money Is intended for. If New West wants to behave like a private school it should stop taking tax payer money.
Overhyped. My child was not engaged, not focused and clearly was looking over her shoulder to see what local public schools offered. Their API slid nearly 30 points but that is because high school is such a different game where diversity of experiences and students are important. Go to nearby magnets to see these things readily available.
New West had been fantastic for my child. We moved him from a stuffy private school and have never looked back. He settled in immediately and has become so interested in school again. They have a young faculty who are very enthusiastic, they seem to make the whole learning experience refreshing. I know not every school will suit every child but New West has giving my son a new outlook on learning, and I love it!
This school could be so much more. There are some great teachers and staff, but there are a lot of issues with this school. It feels like the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Everyone is out of the loop. Students, parents, teachers, and most importantly the administration don't know what's going on and are disconnected. Sadly, I will not have my child continue with New West.
My school is horrible. I wish I could tell you but I can't because I don't know how to. I have learned absolutely nothing in this past year at NW. The teachers give no respect to any of the students. and when you turn in homework...actually you don't even need to turn it in! they don't even check it. And many times they will lose your paperwork. The teachers act like they don't want to explain what they are teaching. If you have a question in class they ignore you. They sit at their desk and e-mail their friends and make you sit and do nothing. You could do better at another school.
New West is an outstanding school. Congratulations to all the students and staff for being named a California Distinguished school again! Thank you for creating a true gem in public education in LA!!!
In my opinion I think that it is not such a privilege to go to new west charter. There is not a field, all we have is a small parking lot. I feel that is is just not rite. I am really disappointed this year that we had to go threw two language arts teachers and we are behind greatly in language arts. It is not fair to me being in a school with absolutely barely anything. New west had the most unorganized field trip i have ever seen, it was disappointing. As a student of new west i do not feel that it is a privilege to attend new west charter school.
Overrated by hype. The principle is rigid and uncaring. There is no yard. Not accommodating. The bus stop is full of high end cars yet they claim to reach for underprivileged kids.
The absolute worst principle: Snobby, conceded, doesn't care at all about the students, only for herself and how the school is perceived to be. New West may have great test scores, but the way the staff treats the students and parents is unbearable. Please by all means do not send you children here.
Having experienced many schools in several districts I can say that New West has been the one were my now 7th grader has become the confident happy girl I knew she could be, due to the NW nurturing environment that is. I have never once seen the principal when she has not taken a moment to say hello with some pleasant easy conversation. Very approachable! No problem speaking to VP either or any staff. We love the new campus, it feels modern, clean and enjoyable for the kids. The park for PE is a block away. Many options for the kids to as far as electives etc. Some great teachers in history, math, dance, study hall, that are adored & respected by the kids. For all that had to be done in order to open the new campus it went very smoothly. The only negative aspect was reaction in the neighborhood, even before any kids set foot there. Difficult to understand why, NW is one of the most efficiently run campuses I have experienced. The kids feel a sense of family, are kind and encouraging towards each other. Thrilled to be a part of the NW family. Very proud to send my kids here!
Administration & teachers do not respond to email inquiries.Parents are made to feel like a nuisance. There is no sense of community for the parents/families who are asked to fundraise, volunteer, and contribute to the school in many ways.. The youth of the teachers can be a benefit at times, but a huge drawback at other times in terms of relating to parent concerns, students who are not understanding what is being taught, and attitude. Coming from a very community oriented &, welcoming elementary school,NW leaves most parents feeling frustrated & disenfranchised at the lack of communication from administration and staff, who tend to use a bossy/demanding tone of much of the correspondence we DO get.Athletic teams/facilities are subpar. They do not seem to make use of the nearby park & YMCA, etc as is suggested in much of their promotional material. It seems some children who behave inappropriately/offensively do not get dealt with in an effective solution oriented manner.Administrators seem to have superiority complex implying "lucky" to be there, however they need to feel "lucky" to have parents who care about their kids education & the school, & treat us accordingly, respectfully.
We feel so lucky to have been granted a spot in this school! Love the teachers all of them committed and happy to be part of NWC. Great Principal!
I love New West. I am thrilled that my two children are able to attend this wonderful school. I love the enthusiasm and discipline of the teachers and administrators. I value the students' focus on academics. I admire the active and required participation of the parents. I like that all of the New West students and families want to be there and count their blessings that they won the lottery to get in. New West has just completed a huge undertaking opening a high school and relocating to a new location at the same time. This has been an enormous undertaking not without many hurdles and obstacles, and New West has persevered and is moving forward as a shining example of what a public school should be. Thank you, Dr. Weir and all staff at New West.
My daughter is doing very well at New West (getting all A's the last 2 years) I would be happy, but I am concerned she doesn't really have to work for them. This school seems really easy, and not challenging enough. Her friends seem to get more homework and need to study more at another public school and are not getting A's. I am disappointed New West does not offer any AP classes as well. I feel this is important to be prepared for college.
New West is a great school with some of the best and most educated teachers. I went there for a year and met most of my best friends that i have today. I was very sad when i had to leave. The school might not be so big but it has many great activities to be involved in. All of the students there are extremely nice and always try their best. New west pushes you to achieve more and become more intelligent. I definitely recommend going there.
The attitude at the school is not "growing pains". It comes from the top down - elitist snobs, rude. A friend of mine moved her kid to a magnet school because she was tired of the attitude. Now I understand what she was talking about. I was rudely told I should count my blessings that my kid is at New West since it's a priviledge to be there. Entrance is by lottery! How can that be considered a priviledge?! The school has been in complete chaos since the move, I'm still waiting for school to begin. I so wanted to like this school but so far I have found nothing to like. I will continue to apply to magnet schools.
