my grandchildren attend (and 1 now attended) Ocean Charter and I'm astonished by their growth--thru the lessons, field trips, and music, drama, art, science, nature projects--and by Ocean Charter's emphasis on the needs of the individual that provides a non-threatening, non-stressful environment for the children
We love the beautiful whole child curriculum - art, music, cooking, math, science, history and language arts, etc... as well as the social and environmental awareness that is nurtured here...
Ocean Charter School is absolutely the finest education out there for children!!!! Never have I heard how so many children love to go to their school as much as i have at Ocean Charter School. The children feel so loved, nurtured, and their needs listened to by there teachers and Principal. Kids are always taught to come from there gentle hearts. When your child comes home from school and they have a big smile on their face because they've learned how to knit or tie a knot or bake their own bread and cook the soup to be served for class that day, this is very fulfilling and exciting to me as a parent that my child isn't learning just the alphabet (which she already knows backwards and forwards) but cultivating her fine motor skills with beeswax and molding these little creatures or shapes with their own hands!! I look forward to our next year at Ocean Charter School!! I love all the interactions we have at the school. I see the principal every morning smiling and greeting all the children and families it feels that she is always going above and beyond! Thank You Ocean Charter for being here and always caring deeply for the children!!
Ocean Charter provides an amazing education to children, fostering their independence and critical thinking, in an alternative and nurturing environment. Kids who graduate from this school excel at an unusually high rate.
Ocean Charter has been alike a home-away-from-home for my son. He has a tight-knit group of friends who echo the closeness of the larger community. The parent body is highly committed because this is a school that walks the walk, and doesn't just talk the talk. The teachers and administrators believe deeply in the whole child curriculum and are creative in finding ways to integrate the Waldorf approach while adhering to state standards. The children are getting an education that doesn't just teach skills, but imbues them with a depth of understanding that will last life-long!
The kids at Ocean Charter learn Japanese, Spanish, Handworks as well as all the required education in an arts based classroom.
child centric, arts integrated- wonderful place to be a child and learn and grow
My son loves going to school, he loves learning because he is given the opportunity to really connect with the material from many perspectives: art, music, handwork, nature, etc.
It is the most nurturing and evolved school environment in all of L.A.
Ocean Charter is great school, but not for everyone. It s a Waldorf-methods school. Parents must sign a no-media agreement prior to enrollment. This means no tv/video games/computer for your child on school days. Your child cannot wear clothing with media-related pictures or writing on it to school. More importantly, reading is not taught until the second grade. Kindergarten is entirely play-based with no academics. Parents need to research Waldorf methods prior to enrollment. My child loves this school and his teachers. She is thriving in the arts-rich, nature-based environment. Her teachers are kind and supportive. There is a lot of outside time for playing and games. Although it's true that parents are not often welcome inside the classroom, there are special events and many other ways to participate. Ocean Charter School may not be for everyone, but it is a high quality school with many outstanding facets.
It's sad reading a negative former experience of OCS and that feelings were strong enough to write here. However, I remind those who venture, to know that every new school has it's hiccups and works through them in a manner that helps become what it set out to be. Calling a school 'progressive' that bases it's inspiration on a 100 year old education system, is clearly misunderstood. I would describe the more insightful and reforming education OCS offers in a more illuminating way. OCS expects it's students to be active thinkers and creative doers, to show originality and effort and not just a recapitulation of the facts. My parent involvement has always been graciously accepted and needed in many creative ways. I support the faculty who work hard to create the depth of the curriculum offered, and is paramount to the success of any school; using my head, hands and heart!
Extremely disappointed with the quality of teachers and the principal. In general we found this supposedly progressive school to be anything but. The 'Waldorf-informed' curriculum seems to be stuck in the early 80's and we found the classes to be rigid in philosophy and isolating from the real world. This is one of the biggest cities in the country, and parents in LA should expect progressive and forward-thinking schools. Ocean Charter has a secretive creepy feel in the way communication is handled. Parent participation in the classroom is discouraged. Why would anyone want their child in an environment like this? If academics and community involvement in a major urban city are important to you, this school is not the right choice. I encourage parents to investigate the magnet program within LAUSD. Those schools are progressive and nurturing. We couldn't wait to get our child out of Ocean Charter.
Could not be happier! OCS is born of love and inspiration and it really is a dream come true on the west side.
Ocean Charter School is growing into the best public school in Los Angeles. The 2 year play based kindergarten gives children time to grow and learn to be together while immersed in a beautiful environment with emphasis on storytelling, singing, painting, drawing, puppet shows, cooking and so much more. After 2 years of imaginative play, students are ready to sit at desks and the rigors of academic learning begin with reading and math- all introduced through the arts. In first grade they start Spanish and Japanese as well as handwork- which starts with knitting. The development of fine motor skills helps with their handwriting and drawing. The students are introduced to flutes and recorders- and later to violin and cello. The games program focuses on non-competitive sports early on. Parent involvement is a huge factor to the success of Ocean Charter School- fundraising is also intense to support the curriculum.
Our daughter went to OCS Kindergarten for two years and liked it very much. However, she had a very hard time switching over to another school after we moved. The curriculum is very different from other schools and parents should be aware of it. As a parent at Ocean Charter I did not care for the 'clique' feeling among parents and teachers. There was a lot of politics going on.
Ocean Charter School is a dream come true. Excellent teachers and an arts curriculum that is derived from a developmental model makes this a place of thriving creativity, kindness, and excellence. It is a true gift to the community.
This is the second year of this charter school and it is actually K-8, the school has great parent involement with music( vocal, violin), pentathalon(for upper grades),movement, spanish and japaneese as part of the weekly curriculum and I am very happy to have my child a part of this school.
Ocean Charter is a mix of LAUSD Charter and Waldorf methodology. If you care mostly about test results and having your kindergartener spell the ABC's backwards, this is not a good school for you. If you want your children to thrive in an arts/music heavy, caring and anti-commercial environment, you should look no further. This school is only in it's second year, and many programs (e.g. PE) are not fully impleted yet. Parent involvement is very important.
