For Lafayette Campus; This is a failing school. The school once thriving (elementary level) now disastrous. Unfriendly administration, inexperienced teachers, bullying, no gymnasium, no theater, no computer lab, no music, no art, cramped campus, still taking in students, elective classes are embarrassing, there is nothing. Parents teach sports after school, poorly taught. Do not be fooled by Open House, glamorized through entry level (6th grade). Rough environment. Most 8th graders last year did not return, most this year will not return, revolving door. Our children walked in above the bar, now below the bar. Common Core curriculum brought in, not mandate for charter schools. We were once a thriving constructivist learning environment. Do not be fooled by the 4/5 star reviews, must be administration. This September, new administration (again) is stepping in due to endless failures, and problems.

Larchmont is a gem of a school system and it's being grown fresh right before our eyes. It's a 10-year-old system, which merged and grew out to high school in the last couple of years. I've seen the whole curriculum K through 12 and it's amazing, I'm especially interested since I am getting my Masters of Education from UCLA. As the parent of a 3rd-Grader, I am in a sweet spot. This school is on the cutting edge of scientific research about what helps all kids learn and grow. No one is panicking about Common Core because, since inception, they've been practicing top-notch educational practices like learning math by having multiple opportunities to connect to the same math concepts and learning reading via non-fiction texts and fun projects. For reading, every child is in a small pull-out group with kids over a two-grade spread who are at their level. This is essential to have kids feel like successful readers. Different learning styles are supported in every classroom. I couldn't be happier with the academics. I have been shadowing at the middle school and the teachers are top notch. The high school is even on a block schedule. I know these kids will be ready for college!

They are having a new executive almost every other year --as the school grows into a bigger school from K to 12, there have been a lot of growing pains. Communications have not been great last year and the sense of community doesn't seem as strong as it used to be. A lot of Hollywood type parents(at least on Fairfax and Selma) --it's not as diverse as they say when it comes to the parental body. Some wonderful teachers already took off and many others seem overwhelmed. The school is OK so far...not sure what the future holds.

Just left Larchmont this past yr, a tough decision b/c our child attended LCS k-5 & we miss the kids&parents. There're some great aspects of LCS, most important being its 12 grades, but the problems we saw at the start, including poorly trained teachers, cramped inadequate facilities [no lib, gym, computer lab], and a "teach to the middle level of academics continued & in fact worsened by the time we went to Selma Campus for 4th & 5th.Other concerns included erratic/shaming discipline, inappropriate use of parents in some teaching spots& a top down leadership fail so our&other parents requests for change were resented/ignored.We switched at 6th b/c it is the most typical time to matriculate for middle school. Our concerns with LCS were also informed by having an older child who did k-12 in LAUSD & not seeing "LCS-type issues" during that time. So, we're more savvy consumers, if you will, which I don't think is true of many of the gushing reviewers here.I guess my best observation is that the earlier grades were fine, but if you want your child to have an excellent educ, LCS is not your best option for later grades. This is born out by the many spots now available at LCS for 6-11

We knew we won the lottery financially when our daughter got accepted to this school. We heard the school was amazing, but had no idea how amazing it really is. From the ridiculously dedicated teachers, active parents to really competent administration (this is important), we keep pinching ourselves. We also love how diverse the school is - not just racially but socio-economically as well. Living in LA, it's important to keep your kids grounded and this school does that. No frilly bells and whistles - just a great education. The best part? Our daughter loves it too! She used to cry every morning going to school and now she can't wait to go every morning. It's been a real game changer for us.

Larchmont Charter High School is a eclectic school with awesome teachers! We are a new 9th grade family that recently joined the high school. Our son came from a private, rigorous middle school, but has been more inspired and motivated by the teachers he has at LCHS. His Bio teacher is so organized and detailed with college-level curriculum, labs, and lessons. His Span. 1 teacher is so diverse and dynamic and the first Spanish teacher that makes him want to speak and learn the culture. He is having a blast with his Eng 9 and Geo teachers that constantly keep the class engaging with lectures, socratic seminars, portfolios, detailed reading, writing, oral presentations and innovative projects, along with traditional tests. The quality of his education is comparable or exceeds the pedagogy that some of his friends are getting who go to private schools like Loyola, Notre Dame, Campbell Hall, etc. He reads the same books and learns about the same content. The rotating block schedule and later start time is the perfect fit for us.I think all this school needs now is more parents volunteering (fingerprinting is common now in private and public schools for volunteers).LCHS is growing gem.

This review is for Lafayette Middle/High School. Greatly disappointed, endless problems. We started at the elementary level which was wonderful. In two years we have had two Principles. Teachers come in go in bundles. Administration is incompetent and behave like children. Direction change constantly, parents are mistreated, mocked and gossiped if they don't play along. Parents are required fingerprinting in order to help (Not LAUSD Mandate). Minimal computer lab, music, and art. Homework site is ridiculous, many teachers do not post. LCS has fallen, curriculum is basic, not what it once was. Not recommended, many children will suffer for it. Any school will be better, do NOT BE FOOLED.

We were an "original family" at LCS and ended up leaving when my son hit middle school. Be very careful about this school for the upper grades. Lovely for K-5 but falls off dramatically after that. Classrooms are chaos, weird curriculum and inexperienced teachers with a few exceptions. Students don't learn basics well and LCS in general doesn't do well with parents who question their academics. Gotta drink the kool ade or you'll be tagged....if your child is bright, much better options for middle school and high school. But fabulous school for younger students.

If you want rigorous academics and socio-economic diversity, this is the best option in Los Angeles, or maybe anywhere. My kids have been at the school for 4 years, and it has exceeded our expectations in every way. There are so many reviews posted here - and they're overwhelmingly positive. I do feel bad for the handful of middle school parents who have posted here during years of transition - sounds like there have been some issue. But personally, we choose this school over all of the LA private schools for the quality of education, the character of the families and administration, and the diversity of the students. So happy to be among a community of hundred of other like-minded parents who agree that we have truly won the lottery in every way.

This review is for the Lafayette Middle School. While many of the teachers are exceptional, they can't make up for the horrible ones (worst my child has ever had) and the incompetent administration. The executive director is the only one who could be relied upon and he is leaving. The Larchmont philosophy is lovely in theory but the implementation at this campus is abysmal and a massive disappointment. The campus has no outdoors, music and arts are barely emphasized and the school lacks resources- these issues would be livable if inept teachers were dealt with expediently and administrators were more organized and effective. This past year was just awful and we are happy it's over and even happier not to be returning. I have to give 2 stars for teacher quality rather than 1 because there are several 5 star teachers whom we loved but again, they can't make up for the school's deficiencies and the other horrible teachers who ruined the whole experience.

The first day I took my child to Larchmont I knew it was special. I could only wish that every school in Los Angeles could be like this school. It has talented teachers and a challenging curriculum with art, music and gardening classes. The school was founded by both concerned and proactive parents who wanted the best public education for their children. Today that is no different and that just might explain why there are 642 reviews for this special school.

I would not recommend this middle school at this time [2014]. My son is in 8th grade at the La Fayette campus. We joined the school in 6th grade based on the positive reputation and class offerings in art, music and language. Unfortunately the school is constantly adjusting to transitions [2 new campuses in 3 years] and suffers from inconsistent and poor leadership, high faculty turnover, lack of after school enrichment or recreation/sports, low supervision, verbal and physical bullying, overwhelmed, or disinterested, teachers, poor parent/teacher connections, and slipping academics. We will not stay for High School. The only positives: they do still offer art, music and Spanish, courses our public middle school does not offer.

Our children are enrolled at the Hollygrove campus in elementary school and kindergarten. The teachers are enthusiastic, dedicated, supportive, communicative and involved. The community is engaged and active in furthering the academic and social growth of each student. The leadership has changed, but remains wonderful. Our Dean is soft-spoken with a steel spine. Her approach is open, approachable and invaluable. The campus has improved in facilities and offerings each year. It is a wonderful place for learning. We have very high academic expectations and LCS Hollygrove is hitting the mark. The after-school program has varied enrichment classes and incredible staff. We feel confident every day that our children are being challenged, nurtured and encouraged every day. It truly is hitting a lottery. We are extremely grateful.

This school is so much to so many different kids and parents. The school tries so hard; the teachers, and administrators. They have been very successful over the years... Yes a real track record... Yes sometimes there are some growing pains. Some decesions are not popular with some parents. Be mature, use the appropriate forum to express your thoughts.... Don't put down an amazing program that fulfills so many children's dreams of a quality public education.... Including my children...nothing is perfect however Larchmont really tries their best.

Going down hill. Used to be much better elementary school. New administration has come in and is taking things in a new direction which includes cutting back on recess, PE and TA's. Yet they still ask the same amount donation $ from parents. Very poor communication from new administration.

the elementary is one of the best schools in los angeles: public, private or otherwise. it's a 10, the basis from which larchmont west grew. getting a spot at either is winning the lottery for LA parents. nearly all of the depressed ratings here have to do with the middle school which has had a rough time; the middle school should have a separate listing.

this school has the most amazing caring teachers and parents that are always willing to go up above and beyond to help the children that attend. My son is in 1st grade and asked me if he could go to this school forever the other day. My daughter is in the new Middle school and also loves it! Im very happy I decided to change schools for my kids and attend Larchmont

The grass is not greener. Both sides have a share of brown spots, the grass at LCS is no greener than other public schools. If your kids are struggling elsewhere, they will struggle here. Likewise if they are thriving elsewhere, they will thrive here. Water the grass where your kids are enrolled.

We feel incredibly blessed to get all 3 kiddos into Larchmont Charter. Having been there for 1 year, we have experienced nothing but great things. There is huge parent involvement, no violence that my daughter can speak of, and teachers and staff that generally care about each child as an individual. They have recently become a K-12 school which I love. We highly recommend this school.

My son will be entering 7th grade in the fall. His 6th grade year was challenging but positive overall. The school is increasing the total number of students per grade but reducing class size numbers down to 25! The "small" school is the reason we were hoping to get into LCS for middle school. I feel that LCS is preparing him for high school and beyond. I was able to contact his teachers through e-mail, which was helpful. They are hiring a lot of new staff at the middle school and high school so I am hopeful that this year will be even better than the last. LCS uses Power School to keep parents informed about their child's grades and their homework assignments are posted so they can stay on top of their responsibilities! The lunch program while not inexpensive, is a wholesome meal (no plastic wrapped nastiness like LAUSD offers). With a new campus for the Middle School and High School I can't wait to see what this new school year holds!

My child is currently in 3rd grade, and we have been here since Kindergarten. I also have another child at a top private school in LA. I have to say that Larchmont is far superior in almost every way. Larchmont gets the best teachers because of good pay and benefits and professional development and because they get to implement the constructivist teaching method that is such a deep, experiential, and academically strong method. The administration and Board are experts, the parent community is tight-knit and very involved, the kids are wonderful, there is a strong character education component, and the academics are excellent. I feel thrilled that we got in and will send my youngest here for sure.

My son Elijah has Adhd and struggled in school since he started kindergarden. Larchmont is the very first school that had made progress with Elijah. With proper nutrition, which Larchmont has organic lunches and supplements it was a success. Unfortunately we had to move, but we will be moving back to La and hopefully Elijah can continue to go there.. This is the best school by far because they really care. Thank you to Meg, Tracy, Kristin, Karen, Candice, Felix, Maria, Rick, Sara and the rest of the staff thank you for making a difference in my sons life..

No school is perfect, but I am very happy with both the education our daughter is receiving at LCW Middle School and the level of personal attention she gets from ALL her teachers and the administration as well. I volunteer at the school every week, and I cannot imagine a scenario which would justify some of the negative comments below. ALL the teachers and staff give out their email addresses and respond to any inquiry within 36 hours. The team-based, project-based curriculum is a powerful way to learn and my daughter is thriving -- utterly connected to everyone around her. This summer she's prepping for an accelerated math program which should put her about a grade ahead next year. The intermingling of upper and lower classmen breeds friendship and community, thus there's no bullying or hostility. The electives bring joy to the students and the wide choice of classes empower them -- they feel like they have some control ove their day. Everyone on the staff is deeply committed, working far longer hours than their compensation would cover, and parent volunteers are everywhere. Do I wish the school was a LITTLE more rigorous academically? Sure, but I think that is coming soon.

I can't say enough great things about this school. The teachers are creative and my daughter who is in the 7th grade has improved so much here. They do lots of experiments in science classes and hands on activities that keep the kids interested in what they are learning. Not many schools offer cow eye dissection to accompany the lesson on the human eye. Kids really benefits from getting hands on lessons. They do tons of projects which we love doing. Communication is top notch at Larchmont I can keep track of grades on every single test and assignment my daughter has for each class so it is easier for me to stay on top of where she may need to focus more or wether she "really does'nt have any homework" when she tells me she does'nt:) Email addresses for every teacher and staff member are provided. Most teachers here have their own website where homework is posted, and youtube lessons are available for any extra instruction a student may need while at home. The school lunches are all fresh cooked, organic and local. This school also has an extremely high parent participation which is what is missing in so many schools. There's a high sense of community and family here.Mom of 4 approved

In the name of charter school , this is actually a private school. This school is getting money from LA USD and huge financial support from the parents. My child started at 6th grades at this school with a advanced level math and English CST scores. But my child is not doing well at all and the teachers do not care about it. It is not easy to contact with the teachers and principal of this school. This school has ruined my child.

The MIDDLE SCHOOL is disappointing. The teachers are not interested and the immaturity of the whole group is a problem. Looking for another school. We started in Kinder at the elementary level and had great luck most years, great teachers (NOT EVERY YEAR) but where happy, friendly, family environment, strong learning habits. The problems are endless in the MIDDLES SCHOOL, mostly with the teachers, unfriendly administration, tough kids that came in from others schools. Many problems. No extra curriculum activities. NOT AT ALL WHAT WE WERE TOLD THE PRIOR YEAR. Discouraging.

I have been fortunate to have my daughter at Larchmont since kindergarten, the year the school opened. She is now in the middle school and has wonderful teachers. Great community and parent involvement.

This is my daughter's second year here at larchmont attending k-1 and I could not be more disappointed with her teacher. Times that I've volunteered she's seemed overwhelmed even though they have daily parent volunteers that go to assist her along with her TA. During parent conferences she's never had material to review ready. I am also disappointed that they do not give any homework and it's up the parents to come up with activities for your child at home to review so that they do not stay behind. I am definitly not recommending this school to anyone that I know. I was going to change schools for first grade but we decided to give larchmont another try which has just led to more disapointment and regret that we had not switched her to another school. There cirriculim and no homework for k-1 might work for other parents but I am not happy and have spoke with various co-workers, family/friends and they also would not enroll their child into this school. I will really miss the Administration since they 've been great and the close knit parent community everyone seems to know you and your child

This is a response to the previous post that I found extreme in its negative portrayal of the middle school. I have two children there, one in sixth and one in eighth. We have been part of the LCS community for five years and continue to love the teachers and the constructivist curriculum. When problems arise, the administration has quickly and effectively resolved them, and both children are thriving socially. I imagine that everyone's experience is different, but as an active part of the school community, I am grateful that my children are here.

AMAZING! All your hopes and dreams for your child will be realized here. Art, PE, gardening, music, high expectations for academics as well as behavior, diversity, beautiful chef prepared meals, after school enrichment like swimming and Lego film making, smiling helpful parent body and admin staff that love their work! Chances are slim for winning the lottery but apply anyway! K-12 means you will never have to gamble your child's education or future again! I am laughing at the 9 rating...as if!

Finding a good school for your child is a very stressful thing. We all know what it is like. Long story short, we all want the best for them. I was very fortunate to find a school that has student diversity, teachers who strive to challenge their kids and parents who are not afraid to be involved on making Larchmont an even better place for their children. One aspect of what makes Larchmont Charter School so special is the level parent volunteerism. The charter encourages 50 hours of parent volunteer support per child and the truth is, many, many parents volunteer much more. They get to KNOW the students, the campus, the teachers and they take that knowledge home to share with their kids. It makes the educational experience richer and deeper. It keeps the school thriving and at one with itself. The family/student/teacher/staff chemistry is unique and it really, really works. Go Larchmont!

And, to boot, Larchmont Charter is really creating a model of what public school should be. We are not raising separate-but-equal kids. Instead, this is a school with mixed races and mixed socio-economic families, with 40 percent of our students under the poverty level. Against all odds, our test scores are amongst the highest in the state.

I love that they mix the grades, allowing younger and older children to interact in a classroom setting. One year, your child might be the youngest, but the next, he or she is the elder and wiser one, mentoring the youngins. I see great value in this school becasue it is a parent-initiated, tuition-free, non-sectarian public school and has proven to be invaluable to the children who attend. The school's substantial, unique and inspired curriculum serves the culturally rich and diverse population of LAUSD students. The fact that admission is determined by annual lottery and is open to all children in California makes it accessible to every child regardless of race, creed of financial status. With the enormous cutbacks to education in California, the Larchmont Charter School is in great need of financial assistance to continue to provide the great education for which it is known.

As a former teacher and grandmother of two of Larchmont Charter School's students, I think I know a good school when I see one. My grandchildren love their school and their teachers. I have seen the progress they have made and have visited the school on more than one occasion. I have asked them questions about their school and learning environment, activities, curriculum, etc. In my opinion, it is an outstanding school.

Larchmont School was created to give the area a decent school where the public schools are truly terrible. The administrators have hired incredibly good teachers, developed an exciting curriculum that engages students in every grade and the learning environment tops most of the expensive private schools nearby. The buildings are definitely not fancy but the heart, soul and quality of education at Larchmont school is far above just about every school, public or private, we have ever observed.

Larchmont is an inspirational place where children learn through experiencing the world around them. I first started working at Larchmont as a TA to see if I liked teaching, while working there I realized there was so much more to teaching than textbooks and tests. I found that children could be themselves and learn in many different ways. So ultimately inspired me to obtain my credential.

We have twins; a Girl and Boy who attend Larchmont Charter School. I thank my stars everyday everyday that we are able to attend such an amazing school. The teachers are thoughtful, happy and extremely interested in our children. We have a unique community and diverse student body. My children who just turned 8 can explain to me the difference between economic wants vs. economic needs. I think I leaned that in 10th grade not 2nd grade. We have moved around a lot and I can tell you from experience that Larchmont charter is the best school without compare (public or private) This is an ivy league SCHOOL that is extremely creative ,cutting edge and loving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's always better when kids can attend a good public school rather than a private school - keeps things more democratic. There is too much stratification in our society as it is. Parents NEED to know their kids are getting a good education and if the public schools can't do it, of course they will flee to private schools.

The fact that the school is diverse in race and income, and provides a dynamic environment for kids of all backgrounds. The fact that the kids don't learn through memorization but through creating and thinking on their own. It's a gem of a school and we are so lucky to have landed a spot there.

We are so happy with Larchmont Charter. The emphasis on the development of the whole child along with 'rock star' teachers and a responsive administration makes for a great educational environment. In addition, the cultural/economic diversity helps children learn to appreciate people from differing backgrounds. Great enrichment includes music, art, PE and Gardening.

with all the fan fair, I wonder if the parents have had a chance to see other schools in the city. ? Or did they just try to get in because everyone says it is THE place to go? This school was founded in part as a reaction to the neighborhood school. That school has improved a great deal. you would be hard pressed to find any primary school in the LAUSD that has kids sitting at a desk and being talked AT. case in point is LAUSD pre K program, which no parent at Larchmont even tried in their home schools. Larchmont is a good school, but it isnt a great school. Lets see what happens when a class actually graduates that has gone through this model and its 4 leaders. What chance of higher education will they have?

Everyday, when I pick up my son from school, it's like picking him up from Disneyland. He is happy and excited about this teacher and what he is learning. He loves HOW he is learning. Our school encourages independent thought and creative application. He is in Kindergarten and is already reading and writing with enthusiasm and confidence. All the parents work together to make sure our school is a safe, healthy and challenging place for our kids to learn. I have never met an unhappy LCS parent or kid. Seriously, NEVER.

From my point of view this school doesn't get any stars points from us...I really thought this school was the best, but soon became disappointed to learn that it was just another school; my child was not given the opportunity to learn and was labeled not capable to learn . After transferring him into a new school .my child is doing 100% better, and he is now an outstanding student in the honor roll. Lesson #1 to other parents, never give up on you child; always give your child the opportunity to learn.

Let me second the previous review: We have two children at LCS and they are flourishing. They love attending LCS. You'd be hard pressed to find a child who isn't happy at Larchmont Charter. And it's not because the kids are in charge, it's because it's a caring environment that truly fosters excitement about learning. My daughter in 4th grade reads 3-4 'big' books a month. Of course, no school can be ALL things to ALL students (and families). With its constructivist approach, LCS may not be for everyone. And while we're not about standardized tests, our API score of 889 indicates our kids are high-achievers. We've had three terrific principals. The turnover mainly has to do with hard reality that our administrators also have to be aggressive fundraisers. We currently have a great principal in Dolores Patton, a charter school veteran. It's also a great community of very dedicated, diverse

Can't figure out what all the cheerleading is about at this school. The academics is poor, the classrooms are chaotic, with students leading the class, not the teachers. Very little learning going on at this school as a result of young teachers, constant turn-over within the administration (4 principals in 6 years!!), way too much parent participation... I think that must be why the principals are weak, and an approach to academics that embraces 'constructiivism' as its model for learning that is waaaaay over the heads of much of the administration and staff for them to embrace and put into use effectively. I am most disappointed with the lack of order and discipline at this school. Who's in charge? The kids? By the way, what is Larchmont's API score? Why isn't it listed?

Don;t know who wote the review on 2/3/10, but you do not know what you're talking about. First of all, LCS scores are posted on this very site. Secondly, the school is all about kids taking part in their own education and not sitting at desks being talked AT. And, we have not been through 4 principals in 6 years. We are on our 3rd. We strive for excellence and do not keep administraors at our school who do not strive for excellence themselves. Would you rather have static status quo like in most public schools where because of unions you cannot fire teachers and staff who are not worth keeping?

Because it was started from scratch five years ago, and we took our kids our of a very old and established private school and found that this one was even more caring and attentive to our kids, even more inspiring in all aspects of learning, and because 30 percent of the kids are on the federal lunch program, the school is truly elevating the standards of education for rich kids and poor kids alike. I think what makes Larchmont special isn't just the great teachers, the facilities or the parents. The children at this school are really special. I've never met so many kids, from varying socio-economic families, that can share with each other and resolve conflicts by open communication and negotiation instead of hostility. Most schools, with the help of active parents, can teach reading, writing and arithmetic but Larchmont is helping my children become good citizens.

We moved our child to LCS this year, when 24 spots opened in the 4th grade. It has been a huge adjustment. We were very excited about placing our child in a constructivist learning environment, after spending years in a more traditional setting, but unfortunately have not witnessed the level of constructivism we had hoped for. California budget cuts caused staff layoffs, including teachers, teaching assistants and specialists. Parents spend the entire year fundraising and volunteering 50 - 75 hours per family to ensure the school can operate, since as a charter school it is only partially funded by the state. For the most part, the teachers and families are great, but it is a struggle being at a school that is so understaffed and underfunded, and at times chaotic and disorganized.

After spending 4 years at an over priced private school, we were concerned that the move to a free school would compromise our son s education experience. We thought, You get what you pay for. We braced ourselves for what would come. Instead, it ended up being the best education decision we ever made. Academically, socially, athletically and artistically, he is thriving way beyond what he was previously. Hard to imagine that a school that offers so much could possibly be free! We have recommended friends from the over priced school, who have had the same experience that we ve had. No wonder the waiting list to enroll is so long. Thank you Larchmont Charter School.

We love Larchmont Charter. Charter schools aren't for everyone. You have to be open to change and willing to give your own time to the school, but accepting those things fosters a greater involvement in your child's education. All this parent involvement creates a real sense of community and ownership that very unique in a public school. The teachers are very passionate and seem to really care about their students. Yes, there have been bumps in the road and there will be many more, I'm sure. But the overall experience has been a great one.

I moved my daughter from a traditional private school which had extremely high academic standards. My older daughter had been through this school also so I was in the unique position of comparing 'apples for apples'. Larchmont Charter is not only comparable but it achieves its goals through a dedicated, vibrant, highly qualified staff. My daughter has gone from loathing math, and not having an option to approach it from a different perspective,(her old school) to loving math. With Larchmont Charter she scored 100 percent in two of her math modules in the state tests. That is remarkable. But there is more. She is well above grade level in reading and comprehension and is still encouraged to excel in this area. For math she started in a group that was struggling but with the love and dedication of the teachers she 'gets it' now and is doing brilliantly. I love LCS!
