This review is for Lafayette Middle/High School. Greatly disappointed, endless problems. We started at the elementary level which was wonderful. In two years we have had two Principles. Teachers come in go in bundles. Administration is incompetent and behave like children. Direction change constantly, parents are mistreated, mocked and gossiped if they don't play along. Parents are required fingerprinting in order to help (Not LAUSD Mandate). Minimal computer lab, music, and art. Homework site is ridiculous, many teachers do not post. LCS has fallen, curriculum is basic, not what it once was. Not recommended, many children will suffer for it. Any school will be better, do NOT BE FOOLED.
We were an "original family" at LCS and ended up leaving when my son hit middle school. Be very careful about this school for the upper grades. Lovely for K-5 but falls off dramatically after that. Classrooms are chaos, weird curriculum and inexperienced teachers with a few exceptions. Students don't learn basics well and LCS in general doesn't do well with parents who question their academics. Gotta drink the kool ade or you'll be tagged....if your child is bright, much better options for middle school and high school. But fabulous school for younger students.
Do your homework....Not recommended, Unfriendly administration. Inexperienced teachers. Very liberal. Too much favoritism amoung students.
If you want rigorous academics and socio-economic diversity, this is the best option in Los Angeles, or maybe anywhere. My kids have been at the school for 4 years, and it has exceeded our expectations in every way. There are so many reviews posted here - and they're overwhelmingly positive. I do feel bad for the handful of middle school parents who have posted here during years of transition - sounds like there have been some issue. But personally, we choose this school over all of the LA private schools for the quality of education, the character of the families and administration, and the diversity of the students. So happy to be among a community of hundred of other like-minded parents who agree that we have truly won the lottery in every way.
This review is for the Lafayette Middle School. While many of the teachers are exceptional, they can't make up for the horrible ones (worst my child has ever had) and the incompetent administration. The executive director is the only one who could be relied upon and he is leaving. The Larchmont philosophy is lovely in theory but the implementation at this campus is abysmal and a massive disappointment. The campus has no outdoors, music and arts are barely emphasized and the school lacks resources- these issues would be livable if inept teachers were dealt with expediently and administrators were more organized and effective. This past year was just awful and we are happy it's over and even happier not to be returning. I have to give 2 stars for teacher quality rather than 1 because there are several 5 star teachers whom we loved but again, they can't make up for the school's deficiencies and the other horrible teachers who ruined the whole experience.
One of the best schools on LA my girl got graduate this year from 8th going to 9th next year she love her school
The first day I took my child to Larchmont I knew it was special. I could only wish that every school in Los Angeles could be like this school. It has talented teachers and a challenging curriculum with art, music and gardening classes. The school was founded by both concerned and proactive parents who wanted the best public education for their children. Today that is no different and that just might explain why there are 642 reviews for this special school.
I would not recommend this middle school at this time . My son is in 8th grade at the La Fayette campus. We joined the school in 6th grade based on the positive reputation and class offerings in art, music and language. Unfortunately the school is constantly adjusting to transitions [2 new campuses in 3 years] and suffers from inconsistent and poor leadership, high faculty turnover, lack of after school enrichment or recreation/sports, low supervision, verbal and physical bullying, overwhelmed, or disinterested, teachers, poor parent/teacher connections, and slipping academics. We will not stay for High School. The only positives: they do still offer art, music and Spanish, courses our public middle school does not offer.
Our children are enrolled at the Hollygrove campus in elementary school and kindergarten. The teachers are enthusiastic, dedicated, supportive, communicative and involved. The community is engaged and active in furthering the academic and social growth of each student. The leadership has changed, but remains wonderful. Our Dean is soft-spoken with a steel spine. Her approach is open, approachable and invaluable. The campus has improved in facilities and offerings each year. It is a wonderful place for learning. We have very high academic expectations and LCS Hollygrove is hitting the mark. The after-school program has varied enrichment classes and incredible staff. We feel confident every day that our children are being challenged, nurtured and encouraged every day. It truly is hitting a lottery. We are extremely grateful.
This school is so much to so many different kids and parents. The school tries so hard; the teachers, and administrators. They have been very successful over the years... Yes a real track record... Yes sometimes there are some growing pains. Some decesions are not popular with some parents. Be mature, use the appropriate forum to express your thoughts.... Don't put down an amazing program that fulfills so many children's dreams of a quality public education.... Including my children...nothing is perfect however Larchmont really tries their best.
At the elementary level, LCS at Hollygrove has exceptional support for students with learning differences. The resource specialists are extremely qualified, kind, patient and thorough with the children they work with. The head of Special Education at LCS is very receptive and attentive to both parents, teachers and students. I feel that my child is in amazing, capable hands. For the most part, teachers are qualified to recognize those students who might have special needs or learning differences and work to accommodate them in class. The only issue I have found was with enrichment teachers not knowing which students had IEPs or 504 plans so they could be more sensitive with those children. But I know they are working to correct this. At the Middle and High School levels, I have not seen such accommodations made for students with special needs -- this will need to be addressed ASAP and more qualified staff will need to be in place to help with this deficiency in the upper grades.
Going down hill. Used to be much better elementary school. New administration has come in and is taking things in a new direction which includes cutting back on recess, PE and TA's. Yet they still ask the same amount donation $ from parents. Very poor communication from new administration.
the elementary is one of the best schools in los angeles: public, private or otherwise. it's a 10, the basis from which larchmont west grew. getting a spot at either is winning the lottery for LA parents. nearly all of the depressed ratings here have to do with the middle school which has had a rough time; the middle school should have a separate listing.
this school has the most amazing caring teachers and parents that are always willing to go up above and beyond to help the children that attend. My son is in 1st grade and asked me if he could go to this school forever the other day. My daughter is in the new Middle school and also loves it! Im very happy I decided to change schools for my kids and attend Larchmont
The grass is not greener. Both sides have a share of brown spots, the grass at LCS is no greener than other public schools. If your kids are struggling elsewhere, they will struggle here. Likewise if they are thriving elsewhere, they will thrive here. Water the grass where your kids are enrolled.
We feel incredibly blessed to get all 3 kiddos into Larchmont Charter. Having been there for 1 year, we have experienced nothing but great things. There is huge parent involvement, no violence that my daughter can speak of, and teachers and staff that generally care about each child as an individual. They have recently become a K-12 school which I love. We highly recommend this school.
My son will be entering 7th grade in the fall. His 6th grade year was challenging but positive overall. The school is increasing the total number of students per grade but reducing class size numbers down to 25! The "small" school is the reason we were hoping to get into LCS for middle school. I feel that LCS is preparing him for high school and beyond. I was able to contact his teachers through e-mail, which was helpful. They are hiring a lot of new staff at the middle school and high school so I am hopeful that this year will be even better than the last. LCS uses Power School to keep parents informed about their child's grades and their homework assignments are posted so they can stay on top of their responsibilities! The lunch program while not inexpensive, is a wholesome meal (no plastic wrapped nastiness like LAUSD offers). With a new campus for the Middle School and High School I can't wait to see what this new school year holds!
My child is currently in 3rd grade, and we have been here since Kindergarten. I also have another child at a top private school in LA. I have to say that Larchmont is far superior in almost every way. Larchmont gets the best teachers because of good pay and benefits and professional development and because they get to implement the constructivist teaching method that is such a deep, experiential, and academically strong method. The administration and Board are experts, the parent community is tight-knit and very involved, the kids are wonderful, there is a strong character education component, and the academics are excellent. I feel thrilled that we got in and will send my youngest here for sure.
My son Elijah has Adhd and struggled in school since he started kindergarden. Larchmont is the very first school that had made progress with Elijah. With proper nutrition, which Larchmont has organic lunches and supplements it was a success. Unfortunately we had to move, but we will be moving back to La and hopefully Elijah can continue to go there.. This is the best school by far because they really care. Thank you to Meg, Tracy, Kristin, Karen, Candice, Felix, Maria, Rick, Sara and the rest of the staff thank you for making a difference in my sons life..
No school is perfect, but I am very happy with both the education our daughter is receiving at LCW Middle School and the level of personal attention she gets from ALL her teachers and the administration as well. I volunteer at the school every week, and I cannot imagine a scenario which would justify some of the negative comments below. ALL the teachers and staff give out their email addresses and respond to any inquiry within 36 hours. The team-based, project-based curriculum is a powerful way to learn and my daughter is thriving -- utterly connected to everyone around her. This summer she's prepping for an accelerated math program which should put her about a grade ahead next year. The intermingling of upper and lower classmen breeds friendship and community, thus there's no bullying or hostility. The electives bring joy to the students and the wide choice of classes empower them -- they feel like they have some control ove their day. Everyone on the staff is deeply committed, working far longer hours than their compensation would cover, and parent volunteers are everywhere. Do I wish the school was a LITTLE more rigorous academically? Sure, but I think that is coming soon.
