This is a safe place to share your honest opinions of a school, whether good or bad.
I've always been ambivalent about the effectiveness of homework. The school allows class-time to complete assignments, which is great, so the burden after school is not too bad. The group projects are a problem, mostly because teenagers don't have the wherewithal to get together after school.
My son has been at Larchmont Charter for 5 years and he has had a wonderful experience. He is now in 7th grade at Lafayette Park Middle School and he is thriving. It is a small campus near downtown and the school is a warm, gentle environment for learning. He is a shy kid, but he has many friends and is doing excellent academic work. This is borne out by his very high standardized testing scores. The teachers all seem young, enthusiastic and kind. We are looking forward to going to high school on the same campus!
the school seems to put up with a lot of nonsense from kids & loudest parent but poor at recognizing actual learning problems. they are just too inept to effectively teach the kids period. I will say, tho, that I have one friend still at the school & her child has learning issues & she is satisfied with the help her child is getting. However, IMO this parent would actually have been better going elsewhere & she is satisfied b/c she has no basis for comparison not having tried another school. And, I saw her fight for years to get her daughter the special help she needed.
The bullying at this school is unparalleled. There are kids at this school and their parents who are very very dysfunctional & the school does not crack down on it. And, as regular parents leave in disgust, it just makes it worse b/c there is such large contingency of the dysfunctional parents & kids remaining. The cyber bullying of late has been awful [I am friends with parents still at school & also with parents who have had to pull their children out b/c of EXTREME bullying]
awful awful untrained teachers. my son was identified as highly gifted & the teachers had zero clue what that looked like or how to teach him. as a result [which is textbook for highly gifted kids], my son began to disengage & feel bad about himself. I can't begin to express how untrained these teachers are...with exception of a male teacher who teaches science is ex LAUSD teacher
all aspects of homework & academics were uniformly awful & amateurish--busy work that was seldom checked [one parent was so exasperated that it seemed like HW was never checked she wrote some really really inappropriate language on his HW to see if teachers said anything. she never heard back. Don't even require it to be in on time & some parents whine so much on behalf of their kids half the time it isn't even turned in.
