Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Great school - Fabulous Teachers, Wonderful Principal and devoted staff. The Special Needs teachers and staff go to great lengths to meet the needs of all students. My children love their school and we are glad that our kids are getting a solid and well-rounded education. The on-site STAR after-school program is excellant and the STAR Director and staff are caring and devoted to the students. I almost forgot to mention the wonderful volunteer chorus teacher and the volunteer Shine mentors who work with our students. LAUSD funding could be much better, so thanks to our volunteers who help provide what LAUSD doesn't cover. Go Canfield!!!

We have a kindergardener this year and absolutely love Canfield! First and foremost, the kinder teachers are awesome! During our first parent-teacher conference, our teacher showed us examples of work and our daughter's progress from month to month. She knew our daughter so well and that made us feel so great. The teachers and staff seem to know all the kids on campus. While the principal doesn't give off a very charismatic vibe, she is really competent and does a good job supporting the teachers to do the vital work in their classrooms. It's a very happy school that seems to have high quality academics. Another great aspect of Canfield is the parent organization. They are just really nice people who care a lot and are down to earth. It's an open, welcoming school. My daughter already feels like it's home and so do we.

We have been at this school for 5 years now and it has been a pretty good experience for both of our boys (currently in 2nd and 4th grades). Without the support of the Friends of Canfield and all of the dedicated parents who spend their time, share their experience and contribute to the ever declining budget, this school would be in bad shape! Our family volunteers a lot, from being board members to classroom parents to beautification days to fundraising. We believe it is essential in supporting the schools ability to give our children the elementary school experience they deserve. The teachers here are amazing, all very nurturing and willing to work with us and our kids, giving extra support when needed. The principle is very hands on and receptive to parents needs as well. I would recommend this school to anyone looking for a true community driven, family-oriented and parent involved small school environment. It does take a lot of work from all involved to make this school work and so far, it has worked for us.

We enrolled in Canfield this year having moved from Brooklyn, NY. My two sons instantly felt at ease. The kids here are so kind and welcoming, immediately making friends. One great thing I have observed so far at Canfield is a lack of obsession with test scores. Other schools my kids have attended have been concerned with their rankings far more than they seem to be with just getting on with the process of teaching, transferring their anxiety about maintaining school test result ranks onto the students. Not Canfield. So far I have seen a great balance between academics, sports and community at this school.

This is our second year at Canfield and we are so excited to start the new school year. Our experience here has been 100%, love the academics, teachers, parents and most of all the students. Put all of this together makes Canfield the best school in the neighborhood.

Canfield elementary, from the mile run in the morning to the healthy lunches and snacks, and community effort , parent participation, and fund raising is at its best. you couldn't ask for anything better. However when it comes to the principle you would think we were at a military boot camp, no open door policy, rarely connects with other humans let alone parents and her tactic is intimidation. i would like more after school activities and volunteer oppertunities so that working parents can be involved and support their children( the Christmas program was at 10am-12pm ) and many others are during school hours. The new Facilities engineer was a breath of fresh air, and over all safety of the campus is good but can have some improvement someone monitoring the gates to the campus would be nice for the start of the new school year to get familiar with new faces. over all this is the best school for your child in the area that free!

Canfield Elementary has been a wonderful environment for us. Our son is thriving in the 2nd Grade - and each year has been exciting, engaging and special. We have had amazing teachers each year, and we feel like parent (and grandparents) involvement really brings so much more to the school. From Yoga classes during testing weeks, to the veggie garden, to "Poetry Cafe" where students recite their poetry... So many things make this school special.

I attended Canfield from K-5th and have enjoyed every moment of my expereience there. Canfield emits this sense of family that is stronger than any other school I have attended or visited. Also, this wonderful school gave me so many opportunities to excel: Young Storytellers (a program where students write a play that is performed by famous actors from Disney Channel, Glee, etc.), the principal for a day essay contest, student council, the 5th grade play, the spring musical, and so much more. I love Canfield so much I come back to vouluneer and to enjoy the schools eternal presence. If you choose Canfield to be your child's school, you are also chosing your child's second home.

Now that my son has been at Canfield for several years, I believe I can give an objective review. I am overall pleased with our experience. You do have to keep in mind this is a public school that is part of LAUSD, therefore it is under funded. That being said, the parents' involvement is so great that it makes up for the lack of public funds. I believe it is this involvement that makes this school so special. I do have to say as a full-time working mom, it is challenging to meet up expectations, since there are so many school activities that require volunteering. But is it well worth it. As far as teachers, we have had some better than others. Most teachers at this school are excellent. The principal responds better if we follow procedures such as requesting time for a meeting in writing, as opposed to stopping her in the hallways. In the perfect world there are areas of improvement, but I truly believe everyone at Canfield does the best they can with what they have. I would not change a thing and I would definitely choose Canfield again.

I have to completely disagree with the comment below. We have an amazing principal who understands the needs of all children at the school and is constantly doing what is in the best interest of the entire community. She does so much that parents simply do not see or are able to appreciate. If the parent below volunteered more and understood what was going on at school, their opinion might be different. The teachers have really raised the bar this year and this is starting in Kindergarten! If the students are not doing the work that is expected and if the PARENTS are not emphasising the importance of completing assignments and being simply put a parent, your child will not succeed.

I can't imagine a more inappropriate description of Canfield then the one below. Our principal is anything but lackluster-ever see a principal dressed like a banana? How about a Sesame Street character? Our principal is extremely invested in the daily lives of our children and is a supportive partner to our parent organization. She is charged with a task that is difficult at best but she does it with poise and grace. The teachers referred to below are consummate professionals who communicate on a daily basis so that the students in that particular class do not miss a beat between lessons. The best way to positively impact your (and your child's) environment is to get involved-so to the poster below join us at the next Friends meeting and help us continue to ensure that Canfield is a wonderful environment instead of using the Internet to bad mouth Canfield and its parents.

When my son was about to enter Kindergarten, I came to check out Canfield with the hope I will be so disappointed by the public school system so we'll have no choice but private schools, but the second I walked through the front office, I never looked back!! This is our 3rd year and i already have two kids in the school. We LOVE every minute of it! Great staff and an amazing principle that knows each and every kid in the school on a personal level, an amazing parent community that accepts all as equal and teachers that are not only great educators but team players who truly enjoy their work and love the school! We should keep in mind that in today's economy a great school must have outside funds and strong parent support to be great. You can't blame a principle for losing teachers due to reduction in force but admire the loyalty of the staff and community to one another for fighting for every teacher and school employee! My kids love the school and there isn't a greater feeling and proof then kids who are eager to go to school every morning!

Lack luster Principal and incompetent staff! They are constantly swapping out teacher throughout the school year as if it has no effect on the children! This school is more about the parents flaunting there money in each others faces than it is the quality of the curriculum for the children.

This is a fabulous school from the student point of view. Programs meet the needs of both gifted kids and those with special needs. There are lots of creative and physical outlets for kids, as well as strong academics (as strong as many prep schools). The teachers are excellent. Kids really enjoy being at the school. However, there is a lot of pressure on parents to donate time and money to continue programs not included in LAUSD's budget and make the school competitive with private alternatives. There's also a lack of attention to the cultures that predominate in the neighborhood (frequently creating scheduling conflicts with Jewish holidays, for example, although the neighborhood is largely Jewish).

Canfield is amazing! Our family was kicked out of BHUSD after my child had attended the same BH school for 5 years. After our appeal to the LAUSD's Board of Education was denied, my husband and I had needed to find a school that would be the closest possible fit to our son. We looked high and low, and Canfield always stood out. The principal is a wonderful, smart, kind, compassionate human being who completely understood what we were going through and took us in with open arms. His 5th grade teacher is the best!!!!! Lastly, the parents have built this amazing organization called Friends of Canfield. It's far better than any PTA group in which I've been involved. We are so blessed to be part of this tremendously generous, welcoming and passionate group of parents and children. I just wish it went to 12th grade!

Our daughter started Kindergarten this year. So far, we are absolutely thrilled with Canfield. All 3 kindergarten teachers are superb--experienced, warm, committed and energetic. The class sizes are indeed too large, but the teachers more than make up for this. Also, the school has amazing parental involvement. It is a true neighborhood school. We briefly considered private schools--we're so glad that we decided to give Canfield a try instead.

I am so disappointed in Canfield. I thought we had found the best kept secret as far as public schools when I read the earlier reviews. The kinder classes are too big. The kindergarten classes have 27 students. They don't have aides. The kinders are crammed into small rooms. Kinders aren't getting one-on-one because of too many kids. The teachers are good but stressed because its 27:1 daily. Parents concerns to staff are discounted. It was not just a LAUSD budget cut, Canfield principal could have made changes the 1st two weeks. Canfield is not the jewel of the LAUSD. I'm not bitter. I volunteer for the classroom and activities, but when you see 1 teacher tackling 27 kids, never mind those who have special needs, alone without an aide, don't you think the principal could try to find solutions. Parents been complained. Viewers should read the + and the -.

March 15, 2010
The reviewers miss the point about the comments. When you have 26+ kids to 1 teacher in the K classes with none to a maybe part-time aide occasionally, how do you expect the teacher to spend quality time with your child. The teachers are overloaded - no matter how good. The parent volunteers help with the paperwork not with the kids. I blame Canfield administration. They did a poor job managing the class ratio. The FofC parents, teachers & Shine are positives. But when your kinder child spends that many hours in classroom, you hope that their individual needs are being addressed during the day rather than 'its the parents responsibility for the one-on-one'. I do volunteer & donate $ to make it better.

ditto to the last poster, like the T-shirt states 'Canfield Rocks' Let's keep this site positive and if you are not happy with what is going on at any school that your child attends a website is probably not the best forum to take cheap shots at your child's school. Get involved, look in the mirror and ask yourself 'what have I done to make my child's school a better school?'

Our child also enrolled in kindergarten in Fall 09, and we have been very pleased with Canfield. People who rate this school as average, or only even above average, have a limited awareness of other LAUSD schools. I guess permit parents are an easy target for people like the last poster; however, their anger is better directed at the true culprits of large class sizes, which by the way, will only get larger next year: the governor and legislators who continue to fund public education at abominably low levels. Parents cannot also expect that Canfield is going to do all the work of educating its students by itself. The bottom line? Our son enjoys going to school every day, and he enjoys learning. That's one of the reasons that for us, Canfield deserves five stars.

February 15, 2010
Our son enrolled in kindergarten in Fall, 09 and we were shocked that his class and the other 2 kinder classes had 26-27 students in each. We were saddened that the principal did not make adjustments in the first week or two of school to create a lower teacher-student ratio for the youngest children at the school. The school places a high emphasis on test scores and test preperation. Rigorous academics combined with such large kinder classes, doesn't provide much time to ensure mastery before the curriculum moves on, leaving a few children to drown in the sea of phonics and sight words. WIth such a big kindergarten class, why were so many children allowed in on permit?

I am a parent who has sent 2 children to Canfield. Last year, Canfield scored above 900 API which put it in the top 10% of all LAUSD schools. Class size has increased at Canfield but it has also increased at other schools. The kindergarten teachers are incredible and have handled this increase of class size with grace. Canfield also has a SHINE program. Shine is a volunteer program where students are pulled out of the class to get extra help. This allows the Kindergarten teachers to teach to small groups. There is also incredible parent involvement at this school. The parents help the teachers do some of the mundane tasks (stapling, sorting, setting up for art activities) allowing the important 'stuff' to be taught by our wonderful teachers.

My child has flourished at Canfield. We started in Pre-K and are now in 2nd grade and could not be happier. We love being able to go to school in our neighborhood and have built bonds with the most incredible people. Each year I am amazed by what the kids are learning and the experiences they are sharing. Aside from the standards being taught, SMART Boards in the classrooms, Poetry Caf , book clubs, the musical, gardening, spelling bee, physical education (which by the way extends into recess and lunch with the kids running for personal goals as well as class challenges) and much more, my child is receiving and incredible educational foundation!

Canfield is definitely a community school. You have a sense of community the minute you walk in their doors. You see parents chatting and hanging out together after the school bell has rung. The parent body is so involved that they make a lot of things happen for the school such as getting smart boards for all of the classes in the school, getting part time T.A.'s for the teachers, computer lab, new library, and a full time P.E. teacher for the school. The entire staff is professional and knowledgeable. I can't say enough about the teaching staff. Each year we have been in for a treat with awesome, responsive teachers. There is diversity in the staff and population that attends the school and you always feel welcome!

We permitted our children into Canfield because when we were looking for a good public school for our children (we don't have any in our area of residence), Canfield fit our criteria...highly rated, great test scores, awesome programs, great teachers and other faculty, a racially and culturally mixed environment and small class size. The parent involvement is outstanding and provides many extra activies as well as professionals that make this school the best beginning to provide your child with the knowledge and the skills to be a caring and thoughtful individual. My younger daughter graduates from Canfield this year (her older sister graduated three years ago) and this wraps up an eight year stint for our family at the school. We bridged the crossover between principals, and though Principal Gullatt lacks the empathy and dynamism of former principal Rogers, the school has maintained its excellence. It is a true community where families can find support and growth opportunities. In a sprawling, intimidating city, Canfield feels warm, intimate and small town-ish. There are many wonderful extracurricular opportunities for kids that include The Paw Print student newspaper, the spring musical, etc. A new coach at the school has innovated an engaging and challenging P.E. program. Both my children thrived there, not only getting a top-notch education, but garnering the confidence that comes from growing up in a nurturing, close-knit community. We are so grateful for Canfield!

This school has so much potential, if only we had leadership via the Principal. Parents care, and teachers really make great efforts to enrich the students' lives on a daily basis. We just need the administrators to take pride in the school, and help take it to an above average school in an above average neighborhood. What's wrong with a new paint job and improved cleanliness!

Canfield is fantastic! My child has flourished academically and emotionally in the four years we've been at Canfield. This school offers many, many activities and classes that most LAUSD schools do not provide. We have Physcial education weekly and dance and music, just to name a few. There have been some negative remarks - which I find suspect. Canfield is a great school with great teachers and active parents. Maybe the complainers haven't been active? Their comments seem bitter and unrealistic. A great school has to have a combo teacher/parent relationship to truly succeed. Maybe some of the negatives come from the fact that those certain indiviuals haven't really participated in their child's education. From my perspective, we lucked out when we enrolled at Canfield!

My son is graduating from Canfield this year and from K-5th it has been a wonderful experience. The staff is warm and supportive. The teachers are very progressive and teach to the individual needs of the student. The student diversity is the best in LA - really a representation of the city -what a super way for a child to grow and learn!! I've been spoiled by Canfield, can't believe he's going to middle school, but I know he is both academically and emotionally prepared. we are very happy with canfield, the ladies at the administration have been very nice, helpful and knowledgeable from day 1, this was 5 yrs ago. parent involvement is a lot which makes for a good school. we have been very lucky with our teachers who were but one excellent. like that the school is a small school. The principle is new and very strict which I think might be necessary to run a good school. There was only once that I got angry with the school for a major misunderstanding with paperwork that I was lucky to found out,no thanks to the principle but thanks to the administration ladies, and what is being put in the right. so only once in all those years is not bad, we really love canfield great participation from parents in all degrees, overall great to fantastic teachers. from happy parents and happy child

Canfield is one of the worst schools my child has attended. It makes me wonder how the LAUSD pick their leadership to oversee our children. Canfield has a great arts programs, parental involvement and diversity. However the administration is disorganized and rude (they lost my child's paperwork twice for his asthma prescription). The new principal seems to lack experience (unable to answer our questions). We had a terrible year in a class that did not challenge my child at all. Parental involvement is very high. The curriculum is rigorous. Our parent mentoring program 'SHINE' insures that all students succeed. The school is completely integrated, and we celebrate all cultures. Every teacher that my children had were WONDERFUL. It's very difficult to get in if you are not in the neighborhood, but try if you can.

Very supportive environment, high parent involvement, real 'neighborhood school' atmosphere.

Parents are quite involved at Canfield, and the Principal is dynamite. Arts are available because it is an 'Arts Prototype' school. But academics are geared toward the average or below average student, and there seems to be less available for gifted, intelligent children.

Canfield is an outstanding school! Great principal, teachers and support staff that care about kids and are highly professional is what I've found at Canfield. Fun activities and special events like the annual Country Fair, Fall & Spring Book Fairs, Science Fair, Literacy Night, Spring Musical,.....well, I could go on and on! I'm very happy to have my daughter at Canfield!

Canfield is the best school I could wish for my child. Teachers, the principal and the parent body all work hand in hand to make it the best school it can be.

I have two children at Canfield. One in 1st and the other in 2nd. This is our second year and I couldn't be more satisfied with their education and growth. I love the family atmosphere and not only do my children look forward to going to school, I look forward to it too! I wish I could take the teachers, children, parents and principal with us when we have to move on.

My daughter is completing kindergarten. The school is a good mix of many cultures and instructs students to behave nicely, and also to excel in academic areas.

Ok,so I'm not a parent... but I am a teacher at Canfield. The past years that I have been with Canfield, I have witnessed a nurturing, caring, and wonderful environment. I am so pleased to be a part of the staff, and to have Sylvia Rogers as my principal. The school would not be the same without her, or the other incredible teachers at Canfield. Our students are amazing, and as they grow, they are becoming fantastic young people. I love our school, and would not dream of working anywhere else.

Canfield is a wonderfully diverse neighborhood school that aims to develop well-rounded individuals. There is a strong emphasis on the arts, a roll-up-your-sleeves kind of parent constituency, first-rate teachers and a seasoned principal who is open and receptive to new ideas. We continue to be exceedingly happy here!

I loved Canfield! I graduated in 1998, and Canfield prepared me quite well for junior high. Ms. Rogers is doing an excellent job, I loved it!
