Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Kenter Charter Parents! Could you answer my question please if your child got into the school via lottery. Do you like the school? Do you feel your child is a part of the community or not?

Excellent education; most of the students are very bright, engaged, and talented; terrific principal; majority of teachers range from good to amazing; compared to other public elementary schools with similar numbers of students, campus is large with a good amount of grass & play space.

i am not sure what kenter canyon the person who gave such a negative review a few posts down. i am a parent of a kindergartener and we do celebrate bdays and holidays. they celebrated halloween, all the winter holidays, valentines, pres day, MLK day and just now saint patty's day. our class, room 3 did day 100 too. i get 2 emails a week from our class parents as well as a friday newsletter and the friday folder that fills me in on all the happenings, which are many. i have had ample chances to meet other parents and families.. there is a lot going on there. i am not sure what class you are in, but my experience has been totally different. we love kenter and cant wait till my other son is old enought start there.

There is no such thing as a perfect school where everything goes right all of the time. That said, Kenter Canyon is an excellent school with a very caring and competent staff. The scathing comment below does not take into account the quality of staff and education present 95% of the time. There are many changes that parents and staff would like to see, however it is important to recognize that Kenter still operates within and is bound in many cases by the larger bureaucracy of LAUSD. I am not privy to how the aides or anyone else gets paid, but Mr. Lewis does an exemplary job as do most of the other aides who all deserve more money and recognition than the currently get.

I am an involved parent at Kenter for the last 6 years. Kenter has been a wonderful experience for my family by providing both a solid foundation in core elementary education and a wide variety of enrichment classes. Most important, we feel that Kenter is a wonderful community of local families who care about their school, the students and the overall community. I am posting this review in response to the review posted yesterday. To clarify a few points made, all classroom aides currently get paid the same rate which is set by LAUSD. If someone is earning more money it is because they are rendering additional services to PSG (the parent group) or the Kenter administration or they perform differentiated services. In addition all enrichment personnel decisions are made after a thorough process involving parents and the Kenter administration. PSG's board minutes, financials and budget are available for review by all parents. I encourage anyone who has questions to get more involved and to come to the periodic PSG general meetings (which are publicized to parents through emails) and all these personnel issues can be addressed and discussed in an open and appropriate forum.

Kenter Canyon is disorganized and lacking in heart and community. We started Kindergarten this year and we had such high hopes! We feel let down and disheartened. The children aren't allowed ANY celebrations in the classrooms! Not even for birthdays. No Halloween or Holidays either. They are expected to sit still and be quiet all day-- there is no fun at all! Our child had made a lot of friends but the parents don't reach out to further friendships and there is a lack of connection with the all the parents. The school needs to have more opportunities for parents to bond and celebrate their children during the school day through class events. I have found that most of the parents don't even know what is taking place in the class. Also, the art "enrichment" is lacking in creativity and is completely uninspired. I am utterly disappointed in this school.

Do I love this school? No, but I do like it and am happy my kids are at the school. There are enrichments and opportunities- made possible with parent involvement and our $- that you won't find at other public schools. The principle does honestly care about the students- a very good trait. And he's also good at listening to your concerns, making you feel better, then nothing actually changes. There are a few teachers that are TERRIBLE and bless him, he wants to get rid of them. Unfortunately, lausd makes it impossible. The fundraising is pretty hardcore, but you get what you pay for and for the most part we all pitch in. The kindergarten program kinda sucks- harsh entry to public school from private preschool. One teacher loathes being there and it shows. The talent show makes zero accommodation for little ones. If you pay for after school enrichment, you have to hand walk them to the class, making extra trips to school. The upper grades are better, god willing you get good teachers. Each year, nice improvements on things like communication and upkeep of the school grounds. Overall I'm happy, just not in "love", after all it's still lausd and bound by their insane policies...

I am a fellow parent and friend to one of the young families that started at Kenter this year in one of the kindergarten classes, and was so horrified by the series of events that took place, I felt compelled to write to let other parents know of how issues of bullying are resolved at this school, and in particular, in this kindergarten class. Our friend's child, whom we have seen grow up and thrive in preschool and other social environments was physically and mentally bullied by another boy in class and his "gang" all year while the teacher and subsequently the principal chose to only believe the claims of the bullying child while ignoring the needs of the child that was being hit, pushed to the ground, and harrassed for ethnically different food. It is our responsibility as parents and teachers to protect our children and nurture a non-threatening environment as much as possible. The parents of the bully chose not to believe that their kid could possibly behave in such a way, even when they witnessed it with their own eyes. Shame on them. And shame on this school for failing to care to perform their most fundamental duties. This is kindergarten, for pete's sake. Heartbreaking.

Kenter Cyn., is a good school, but not the BEST. This school has gone downhill since the major budget cuts. The school is hainging on a thread. However, my daughter is getting a well-rounded education, but I am not happy with the class size, and the constant shift of staff changes. The parent support is good, but not the best. YES, this school raises money outside of LAUSD through parent support. NO, the parents can't keep up financially with the state cut-backs. There is no librarian!!

We have been at Kenter Canyon for seven years and will be there for two more. Our experience has been extremely positive both academically and socially for our two boys. They have thrived in a very dynamic school strongly supported by parent involvement. As working parents, we have also really appreciated the on-site STAR after-school program which has given our children a well-supervised, enriching and caring experience.

all the benefits of private school at a fraction of the cost. and the STAR afterschool program is beyond your wildest dreams. we've been using them for the past 10 years for our kids, and they are wonderful, caring, thoughtful, rigorous, and smart. all that AND they have a terrific sense of humor and perspective, often missing in the childcare environment.

Another great aspect of Kenter Canyon is the STAR program which provides a program for pre K and after school students. It's a great resource that helps students with homework, academics, social skills and plain old fun.

Best Chartered K-5 School in LA. In my opinion, they even surpass other neighborhood private schools, in terms of quality of teachers, academics, class sizes, enrichment classes, outdoor academic camps for students and many other activities that stimulate children minds in a way that they become better students and bring out the best they can be for their society, a group of educated, caring, loving, effective and constructive human beings.

This is a wonderful school. My son just graduated. Teacher and staff and especially the principal are just amazing. It feels like a private school. There are lots of enrichment classes offered. I think my kids got a well rounded education and my son loved being in different sports. Parent involvement is tremendous.

I have two kids currently attending and we are so happy here. They have an amazing STAR program that adds so much to the school in terms of sports, education, leadership and unity. The STAR program has helped my kids gain confidence and refine their academic and leadership skills. As a parent, knowing the STAR program is available to my kids at all times, I have peace of my mind. The director and staff at STAR treat my kids as if they are their own. We're family and it's fantastic. Thank you Kenter Canyon and STAR!!

I am wondering what others think about the two towers the border this school. Do you think they pose a risk to the children in the classrooms and on the playgrounds? They are clearly run by LADWP and transmit electricity throughout Brentwood/Kenter Canyon.

The focus on fundraising at Kenter is intense. Most families in this area can easily afford to give 'at least $950 per child' annually, which they STRONGLY push. However, it s a public school. A family should not be made to feel guilty if this is way, way more than they can afford. Especially in lower income families , finding the time to do all of the fundraising is very much a strain. There is a difference in how the wealthy and those that are not wealthy are treated. As compared with other LAUSD schools, they seem to go out of their way to discourage those they feel will not benefit their school from attending. Not only do I have this concern, but I have heard this repeated by other parents as well. On the other hand, the individual teachers we ve experienced have been great.

Within the constraints of a huge public school system, this charter school has done a wonderful job of educating and socializing my son. The teachers are very accessible, experienced and caring. There's no doubt that with big class size and a focus on testing the teachers are not given enough freedom to engage with the kids as creatively as i might like or to take one child's interest and run with it. It's just impossible to do that...So we do it at home!

Great school, but strives to garner the best scores possible, without thought to the effect it has on the children. The massive amounts of work outside of class leaves children with little or no time for extra curricular activities without great sacrifice. Which is very hard due to traffic constraints of LA. The academics are great if your child has no other ambitions but in my opinion they don't adequately address life for a 'child.'

Kenter is a prime example of a community having a positive effect on the challenged public school system. Our daughter is very proud to go to Kenter-- no matter where you go, when you go there also matters. Kenter is in great form. Having moved here recently from a city where there was more confidence to attend public school than we've generally found in the westside communities, we feel fortunate that all the previous hard work and the collaborative spirit between the administration and attending families have made public education a very strong option for our neighborhood. It will be our natural challenge as a public school to keep the value of extracurricular experience a strong part of the education. But good news is if you are considering attending Kenter the critical elements are alive and well. We're happy to be taking our turn to support our public school.

While I think this school is trying hard to straddle the line between what the LAUSD expects and needs(in terms of test scores etc...) and the wishes of the parents, I believe they 'educate to the test' too much and their is a lack of depth in their education process. While parents are very involved, a handful seem to wield an enormous amount of control over the way the school is run and seem more concerned with asserting that control rather than adding richness to the curriculum. The principal is happy to accede to their demands and doesn't seem to have the best interest of the children at heart as seen by his canceling extracurricular programs for the kids without giving any reason to those affected. Overall, this could and should be an incredible school which should rival private elementary schools in the area but misses significantly due to various reasons.

A child's experience is very dependent on the individual teacher and how willing he/she is to teach in a interactive and inspired style. Many teachers seem afraid to incorporate real world questions, concepts, & cultures as there is a heavy hand pushing test scores and conformity The school is strong academically but for a 'charter school', there is little of the creative approach and interactive curriculum one would expect after reading the goals of Kenter's charter. Unfortunately there is an overabundance of worksheets and rote learning to augment test scores. Speciality teachers (science, art, computers, P.E-paid by parent funds), 'Walk thru' programs and 5th grade science camp, are all an incredible asset and one of the few chances for kids to 'experience' hands on learning.

We've been very happy at this school. This is our ninth year at the school and we've seen great improvement in almost every area from the time our first kid started until now. Parents are very involved with every aspect and make a big difference. Overall, the education is solid but more could be done with the gifted program and for struggling kids. There is a tendency in all the public schools right now, Kenter included, to teach to the middle. The extra-curricular opportunities abound with multiple after school classes. The kids seem to love the school and feel a lot of pride. The campus is beautiful.

My wife and wanted a public education for our daughter Olivia. From the moment we became involved with Kenter Canyon we knew we had made the correct choice for her. The admistrators and teachers are committed, involved and skillful. They genuinely care about each and every child that attends the school. The education and safety of the children are of the highest importance. The music, art, sports and science programs are made available through the tireless funding raising efforts of the parents who are committed to providing their children with a rewarding educational experience. As with any public school, parent involement is critical to ensuring our children are exposed to the arts, sciences and music and other activities. Kenter Canyon is a great example of what is good (great) about our public school system. I wish that all elementary schools performed at this level.

Kenter's teachers range from excellent to fair. The school is small and lower-grade teachers come to know all the kids. The principals have mostly been ineffective but the school has a very active parent committe who does tons of fundraising for teacher aides, arts programs, sports, and other enrichment. One of the best aspects is after-school and before-school care by STAR, led by the wonderful Miss Melissa. Unfortunately the program has been severely curtailed due to space limitations. If your child is not doing well, I understand that the administration is more responive now than in earlier days.

Kenter Canyon school offers many terrific teachers and highly involved parents, who contribute both time and money to make this school function in some respects like a private school. The downside is that the pawprint of LAUSD can also be felt in some significant understaffing and underfunding, particularly when it comes to playground supervision and teaching assistants. The Parents Support Group funds many extracuricular activities, however the quality of these activities can range from fair to mediocre. Of course, many other schools offer nothing in the way of art, music or sport, so this should be viewed in that context.

Kenter Canyon is a school totally devoted to giving it's students all that it can. Of course most of this assistance comes in the form of parental contribution (mostly monetary), but I am o.k. with this because I have seen first hand the difference it can make. All the classes have aids, the enrichment classes are incredible. The students and faculty seem to be a good 'community' versus just showing up to do what needs to be done. The new principal is great! This last year a new drop-off system was put into place in partnership with the LAPD that will make a huge difference in school safety and organization. I give Kenter a 9 out of 10.
