Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

It use to be good school. Now it still is ONLY if you are lucky to get good teacher, and there are not a lot of them. Principal is very intolerant, rigid and hard to work with. School in my opinion does not have a good future under her leadership.

This is one of the best public elementary schools on the west side of LA. The teachers and principal are really great. The culture of the school is diverse, kind and proactive with many helpful and supportive family volunteers. Class sizes in upper grades could be reduced more which would make it perfect.

I am in fifth grade at this school. It is a great school! It has a great chorus and lots of fun sports like the new Mar Vista soccer team. There is a great art program and lots of field trips for the students. And, the BIG BOO. The big boo is like a little carnival we have at are school. It has a haunted house, fun games, and food to eat! Evan though I have only gone to this school for 4 and a half years ( this is my fifth) I have had a great time at this school and I am sure you or anyone else will too!

Mar Vista Elementary is a fabulous school TK - 5th grade school. Teachers are engaged and want to be there. The Principal, Mrs. Choe, forges strong relationships with parents and students, inspires and models a can-do spirit for making Mar Vista the absolute best it can be, and is extremely accessible to parents. The parent body is wonderful. People from every walk of life and a wide range of socio-economic backgrounds make Mar Vista Elementary school one that truly reflects the city we live in. Parents have myriad opportunities for involvement and rise to the very real challenge of being an active and involved part of their children's lives at school. The campus is lovely and well cared for - a real neighborhood school.

My son had an amazing kindergarten experience at Mar Vista. The school offers a lot of extras that have been cut from many other LAUSD schools, such as weekly art classes, P.E., computer teacher, due to the parental fund raising done. There are many ways to be active and involved with the school and I always felt welcome. I am so happy to be a part of this community!

'Doesn't really matter much now I guess, but I attended Mar Vista Elementary in the early 1950's(!). I've never forgotten the wonderful, welcoming start the school gave me at the outset of my formal education. I have been on the faculty at Oregon State University since 1975. Thanks Mar Vista!!

My child culminated from Mar Vista in June and while we are excited about middle school, we are sad to leave the positive atmosphere of this excellent school. While the API is well into the 900 s, few schools nowadays are as committed to students and not solely test scores as is Mar Vista. The principal, Katherine Choe, is driven, organized, and her work ethic is unmatched -- a wise leader indeed. My child's teachers consistently worked collaboratively within their grade level to enrich the curriculum as well as to address the needs of ALL students, not only struggling students. In my opinion, this is the hallmark of an excellent school. The Wonder of Reading library is a strong asset too, and the enrichment programs such as art, music, science lab, computer education, physical education and Spirit Series are a few of the components contributing to the excellence of Mar Vista. My family was lucky enough to have had the opportunity for our child to be educated at Mar Vista. It has provided a strong foundation for her future education and we attribute a good part of her future academic success to this exemplary school.

My son did just graduate 5th grade from Mar Vista yesterday. He was only there for 1 year but we are so happy he had a chance to go there. It was an amazing school and he has been so great for him there. Special thanks to his amazing teacher Ms. Dotson. And also to thanks to Mrs. Berman for all the extra help she gave him. Now he is off to middle school, but we will not forget this great school.

I really love this school. We have done the tour and our son starts next year. We use the playground and have attended many events. I am sad to hear about the negative experiences. I think it can be a hard transition from preschool for any child but this is still a wonderful neighborhood school w/a lot to offer.

My daughter is now in 5th grade and she loves this school. We feel very fortunate and grateful for the education she receives: great teachers, music classes, Honor Chorus, and more. What makes this school so special, is the amazing parent involvement. Where else do you have a valet drop out in the morning? The sense of community is evident at this school. Students are safe, polite and happy at Mar Vista. I would not have wanted any other school.

We previously attended Clover Avenue Elementary School, and it was such a big mistake to come to Mar Vista. I should have notice it, the moment I walked into the main office. There is not enough organization at this school, when comparing it to Clover at least! I have left messages with the AP and for one reason or another he doesnt recieve them or return my calls. My son has an IEP and these sort of things are pretty critical. Although this school, does have some great teachers, there needs to be more organization beginnning with the main office. I just wish I had never left Clover, I never realized how great of a school it was until we left!!!

I just had the wonderful experience of watching Mar Vista Schools talent show with the students (as opposed to the parents). I am so proud to be a parent at that school!! The students were amazingly respectable of the other students on stage and were a perfect audience. They clapped after every performance, booed no one, no giggling, they were remarkable. Great school, kids, great parents.

Our daughter love Mar Vista. Her teachers in kindergarten are wonderful. The parents are great and are very supportive. At the start we were overwhelmed by all the Fundraising activities but we soon learned that everything is voluntary. We are not forced to do anything. Our daughter was in private schools before and she like it but she just blossomed in Mar Vista. She loves going to this school. She has formed great friendships and has learned a lot. She now knows how to read, loves art class, loves P.E and loves her teachers. We are lucky to find this great school.

We've only been at Mar Vista for 5 months so take this review with a grain of salt. If you are a traditional parent with an authoritarian viewpoint nothing to worry about, great school for you. If you are like me, more interested in creating a little, beautiful person who can think for himself, who will be valued and cherished instead of a little person who will regurgitate facts, please explore your options. This is a top-down school. Teacher is king. Do as I say. You are a kid, not a person. No time for helping the personal side of the child, words, words, words, work, work, work. However, there is definitely a sense of community at this school. Moms working away in committees, neighbor to neighbor playdates, great Music Teacher, computer lab, afternoon programs, etc. This is not an alternative school and it will never be!

My twin boys' last day of kindergarten is this week, and although I am sad to see this absolutely incredile year end, I know that I have a great 1st grade to look forward to the next school year. The teachers, staff, and principal at this school have far exceeded all of my expectations and my children's progress has been phenomenal. The school offers all its children P.E., art, and music. The best part was the play in which my children participated in at the end of the school year. They leave this year with much more self-confidence, better academic skills, and wonderful social skills. In addition to the teachers, the principal and staff are truly amazing. Principal Weinstock is a hands-on principal, who through caring and her own dynamic personality shows not only her support of the school but also keeps it on track. I cannot wait until next year.

As most reviewers have stated the school facilities and fundraising groups are stellar. Individual teachers are the key to success. We have seen wide variation in experience and ability to motivate. This year we got lucky in two grades. The Star after school program is terrific with serious efforts made towards getting homework done. The kids are enthusiastic and show real talent in the Star performances.

MarVista has a good reputation, however we found many more negatives than positives. The campus is beautiful and their parent involvement is remarkable. Some students seem to perform well in their environment. In our case though our son had an extremely poor experience. The focus was on high academics and standardized testing scores. Students even a little bit behind academically were labeled 'learning challenged'. These students were pushed to the point of overload to 'catch up' with the rest of the class. The amount of homework for kindergarteners was unacceptable! It was a stressful learning environment. We took the first opportunity to leave for a public charter school. Now, our son is thriving in school not to mention he loves it! What a difference!

This is a beautiful school and community. Parents are extremely active in fund raising to provide various enrichment programs to all children in school which would otherwise not be available through LAUSD. It is a hidden gem in Los Angeles. Socio economic, and ethnically diverse, it is a melting pot. The front office knows the parents by name, the principal seems very involved in all aspects of school activtities from playground, to cafeteria, to checking on each of the classrooms. Volunteer opportunities abound and there is no clique (that I have observed) as far as the school booster clubs or PTA, everyone is welcome. My child has been here for approximately 3 and 1/2 weeks and she is already reading!! Amazing.

The school leadership is obsessed with fundraising (though with vague goals like our wonderful programs ), but kids are of little concern, if at all. Some staffers are very good at what they are supposed to do, but others are indifferent, uncaring, or just rude to the kids. Heavy involvement of some parents is just intended for a lot of politics to provide preferential treatment for their own kids. So the label of the best school in town is rather a result of a joint meditation than of real current conditions.

Although this is one of the better public schools around offering the students art, computer, and P.E. classes, it can be on the cold side if you do not know how to speak up. With the exception of one or two the office staff tends to be rude. Students who might need special ed or need to be evaluated is a long and frustrating process here. Even though the principal takes an active role with school activities, functions, donations etc. she can also be on the crass side.

Overall, we have been very pleased with my child's kindergarten experience at Mar Vista. The school does a great job of getting both working and non-working parents active and involved in the school. My child's classroom usually had at least 3 adults (teacher, aide, volunteer) in the morning and or at least 2 (no aides from 12:45-2:30). The teacher was organized, energetic, and encouraging to all the kids. The only time I had a strong concern, I called the principal who called me back promptly to discuss and respond.

My husband and I have been very disappointed with Mar Vista Elementary School. We are a blended family and we feel that my husband and I have been ignored by this school. We rarely if ever see reports cards and the school does not inform us about our son s progress at the school. Last year when he and I showed up for our parent-teacher- conference, the teacher asked us what we were doing there, as she had met with his mother already! This has pretty much been the case since he was in kindergarten. We find this rather shocking. With a 50% divorce rate in our society today, we are shocked that Mar Vista Elementary is not better equipped to deal with blended families. We are looking very forward to the day when our son will be in middle school where we will be treated like parents, not outcasts.

This is a school with an extraordinary amount of parental involvement. Fundraisers are very successful starting with the phonathon in the fall and ending with the silent auction in late spring. The funds go directly to the children, everything from the music program to arts instruction to beautifying the grounds. I have joked that I could eat off the hallway floor-- this school is so clean, but truly the walls are freshly painted; the floors shine; the classroom books are newer. Nor is the school wanting for school supplies. The Principal is new this year, and she is very communicative, friendly, reaching out to the families. My older daughter went here until 3rd grade (when she transferred to a magnet); her teachers were wonderful and to this day she misses the Mar Vista community. My younger daughter is in kindergarten, loves it, and is already reading.

I know my daughter has and is getting the sound foundation that's needed in her education. She loves going to school. Thank you Mar Vista.

We are extremely happy with Mar Vista Elementary. The parent participation is high and has the feel of a real community. My daughter just completed Kindergarten and she didn't want school to end! Her teacher provided an excellent foundation for reading, math and science. Kindegarten is light years from my own experience.

My daughter is finishing 3rd grade and I think it is an outstanding school. So far her teachers have been excellent. Parental involvement is an expectation both in an out of the classroom. It's a shame there is no middle school in Mar vista of this caliber.

My son is in Kindergarten and I am disappointed enough to switch schools for first grade. I really can't believe people move to this area for this school and how highly it's rated! There are never adequate supplies and though many of the parents are involved somewhat, too many are not. The teachers are wonderful but constantly have to rush the kids to finish way too many tasks/ projects. There's not enough help for the disruptive kids who seem to take up most of their time.

Mar Vista has a excellent principal who is involved in all aspects concerning her school. She stresses how important parent involvement is to the school. This school is not only academically great but its rich in its enrichment programs as well. They go the extra mile to ensure our children get art, music and computer lessons.
