My daughter attends the Performing Arts program and loves it. She LOVES her music class and is doing exceptionally well academically. The school is not perfect but what school is. As long as my daughter is happy and engaged and her grades are good I can't say anything bad.
Just like any other school it has problems but overall the school is great with the new principal you can already see the difference. The music teacher is good just not with middle school students!
My school is Marina Del Rey performing arts magnet. We love our school and the school community. My daughter has done some amazing things since she started school here.
My son went through all 3 years here and my daughter is now in 7th grade. We love it. It is a dynamic, diverse middle school which my kids feel (felt) an important part of. Some of the students are very serious performers but my kids chose the performing arts magnet because it made school fun. They learned how to be relied on as part of a group in performances. My son was surprised at how much he learned in dance. Coach Farris is an LAUSD treasure. The school needs more support as the energetic new principal and tireless lead teachers are doing more with less--as most public schools are--every year.
I really like this school for a few reasons. I have two children here, one in marine science, the other in performing arts. Teachers have been great about communicating. The dance performance night really showed how dedicated the children & teachers are. It was a fabulous! My daughter is always showing off something new she learned in dance class. My son has taken many field trips learning about Marine Science & community. The Current principal has made a difference already in the few months she s been there. As with any school children are children, and they will test the limits. Speaking from personal experience, the Dean is on his job, keep calling but they re on it this year - calling parents, getting involved, expelling bullies,& notifying us of almost everything. I love it. My children are bussed the school has been very supportive. Open your pockets school board! We almost lost great teachers w/ the cuts. Both of my kids love the school. Everywhere issues. It has nothing to do with life status or where you live but rather what is your value system and the direction in which ones moral compass points & what our kids are taught @ home by word & example. It takes a village!
This school get money for the children in the magnet program and most of the children in the magnet program are treated unfair by teachers and their Coordinator. They need these children to keep their numbers up in the school, but they really don't won't these children at MDR, that are being bused in. Some of the teachers have no classroom management skills but ready to speak about one male teacher when they class is just as much out control as his. Parents please do your research before putting your child here. My opinion it is worst for boys. Not a fair school for all children.
I think the previous review was an extremist point of view. This is a decent school, with some really great teachers and some satisfactory teachers. The problem is that the principal who was there from 2011-13 was terrible with discipline & the dean position was vacated in 2012. There is a new start at principal and they have a really solid dean for 2013-14. He won't allow nonsense to go on. Kids tend to get away with what they are allowed to do. This group can and probably be better managed this year... As far as campus cleanliness goes, the plant staff works their rears off, the campus is beautiful & the location is awesome.
We visited over a dozen middle schools all over the south bay and my daughter chose to comute over 30 miles each way to attend this school. While I cannot say it is perfect, she has benefited tremendously from the program they offer. Now in her second year, we moved to be closer since my son has now chosen to follow his sister to pursue similar interests. Many of the teachers are absolutely outstanding, especially the magnet coordinator, who must also teach due to budget cuts. The dance instruction is unparalleled. Parents are very involved on campus and provide a nurturing environment. A criticism might be that they do not tend to expell students when they maybe should, they really try to work with them and help them make better choices. You know the saying, "a few bad apples". The same goes for some teachers, just a few bad apples, but all in all, we are very happy with our experience there.
We decided (parent and student) to enroll in the marina performing arts magnet program and so far we are satisfied with the school. Teachers are great, staff in the offices needs improvement, administration just ok . We do like how vocal and involved the parents are.
If your child is an advanced dancer, this is the school for you. Otherwise stay away. There are no performing arts at this school other than dance. At back to school night the drama teacher/magnet coordinator told parents, "We're really not going to do anything this year in terms of a production." The inept choir/orchestra teacher has been replaced by an orchestra only teacher and the theater tech teacher has been relocated, All of their students were sent to drama, making it overcrowded with kids who don't want to be there. Even when the tech and voice teachers were there, they couldn't manage to stage a production. My child has been assaulted, bullied and stolen from by the other students and belittled by adults in front of classmates. There is a strong anti-white sentiment among students. In 2+ years, only 2 adults have done anything about the racial epithets being hurled - and one them was a sub! There's no positive support for kids doing the right thing, only damage control and even that is sadly lacking. There are fights weekly, if not daily. There is no parent group, just a lot of squabbling among them. I guess we know where the kids get it.
If you are considering to enroll your child in any of the schools ran out of Marina del Rey Middle School...DO NOT! This is one of the worst schools that LAUSD has to offer. The teachers are bullies and do not teach. With the exception of a few teachers, that are great, you will suffer with the many that are not prepared. This school was more than a disappointment, it has ruined my childs positivity and drive. It has put a dark cloud on the relationship I have with my child and we will not be going back to this terrible school. I have nothing good to say about the school. AND the school does not inform you of events and is completely unorganized. 100% a failure....your child will suffer.
This school is the worst school in mankind. The classes are very over filled and they dont give one on one attention.
Marina del Rey Middle School is a great school! Those are words from my 8th grader, which I fully support. Three years ago we moved from out of state to California and my daughter started at Marina del Rey Middle School. During her time spent at this school, she has had many wonderful opportunities. In 6th grade she joined the first Marine Science Academy class where she has had studies at the beach, trips to the aquarium, Sea World, and Catalina. Last year, she joined the Marina del Rey competitive cheer team and they won a national championship for the third year. The teachers and administration look out for the children and want to help them succeed!
This school is the best kept secret in the neighborhood! At half the size of most middle schools, it feels like a community school. As a new parent, I was blown away at the quality of the homework assignments, the attention my child received and the support our family receives from the administration, teachers and other families.
I am so pleasantly surprised at what a great school Marina del Rey Middle School has become. The teachers are enthusiastic. The diverse student population seems happy and polite. The whole school has been renovated, including fresh paint, new bathrooms and lockers and a great new weight room including a rock climbing wall. There are honors classes for those who excel and a free one-on-one tutoring program for those who need help. While the outside of the school looks like your typical LAUSD bungalow style school, the courtyard is lush and green.
I can say the staff definetly needs a lot of work on their manners especially in the main office. Parents are always complaining how they are treated. The Principal listens and wants whats best for the students and tries to make everyone happy. The VP is very understanding too. She brightens up and softens up the office. Its a great mixture. The school is better then all the years I can remember. The teachers are wonderful and the staff at Marina are very helpful. Since they have a new Parent Ctr the school is turning out pretty good. You need to help the parents first so they can help their child. The Parent Ctr is beautiful and coming along.
I am a new parent at MDR and am very sadden at the lack of support the school is getting form parents. Yes, the school could use more leadership from administration and more involvement from parents but by no means is it a poor school. I see potential and appreciate the support many teachers and faculty at the school are trying to provide. If we parents chose to put in the work needed to make our neighborhood school s more successful, the programs and our children would be more successful. If parents continually pull their children from schools that could benefit from their care and attention we will lose many of our good teachers and leave those unable to move to a charter or private school in dispair. The key is to foster the goodness and rally against the bad.
Not enough leadership around the school.. and who is the principal?? Also they push on the uniform too much even though the Los Angeles school district does not require uniforms. It's optional. (Some parents and I are getting together and filing a complaint with the school board) My child's math class has over 35 kids in the class.. you would think the area of concentration would be some thing like that......not the uniforms.
what do you mean clean. it is a trashy school. i thought in the first place they would paint the lockers and the walls. very dirty!
