We looked at progressive elementary schools and decided on Mt Wash because of the community and the great teachers' presentation we saw at orientation. We've been v happy at the school and our daughter is thriving but I do think it is important to think ahead about which teachers are a good fit for one's child (the teachers' interpretations of no child left behind are varied.)
My Daughter has attended MT. Washinton for 3 years i love it and she also loves it thier the staff is excellant with the children and they are also great with all of us parents. this school deserves these 5 stars.
My husband and I have been very happy with Mt. Washington so far(our daughter is in kindergarten); more importantly, she loves it. I was initially concerned about the structured curriculum and the rules-based atmosphere in the classroom--it's not the same as a child-centered progressive school. Nevertheless, my daughter is thriving--she is excited to be learning how to read and enjoys the music, dance and art. Her teacher is very organized, and expects and gets quite a lot from the students. Finally, the community feel of the school is fantastic--the parents and students are caring and involved. The community of families is very diverse.
This is an amazing school. Dedicated teachers, parents who if anything are too involved sometimes, ethnically and social economically diverse, can be a bit too PC for my taste sometimes. Free, not impacted, great campus, safe and so close yet seemingly far removed from the city. Music program is available but not extensive, good art program.
My child has been attending Mt washington since 1st grade and has had excellent teachers that really care about his progress. Ms Clifton,Ms Paz,Mrs Hong have made learning fun and exciting. These wonderful teachers care from their hearts about their students and really desire them to be their best. I have nothing but good things to say about this school and have attended Mt. Washington my self and have many wonderful memories to hold on to. The parents are very involved and dedicated to making Mt Washington a great school.
By LAUSD standards, an excellent school, and at least 'very good' by any other standards. If you're looking to live here, you probably already know that parents are willing to pay the premium home price, in order to send their kids to this school -- and, it's a great place to live and raise kids. Hard to believe it's just a few miles from downtown L.A. Ethnic diversity is very good (you can look it up), parents are very involved, teachers tend to want to stay here! I should mention that it's one of the very few K-6 ementary schools in LAUSD, which presents a dilemma for me right now, as my son is in 5th grade. We'd love for him to stay for 6th, but that limits our options for him going into middle school (almost all are 6-8).
My son's 1st grade teacher, Ms. Clifton, has been wonderful. She recognized some problems in the first few weeks of class and was very creative about working with his particular learning style. He loves going to school.
Solid teacher staff, many with many years at the school. Diverse population ethnically and primarily middle class and affluent.
My daugher is thriving, do in most part, to the fantastic teachers she has had so far, Mrs. Park and Ms. Brashears. I appreciate the intense community involvement. It has instilled a lot of Civic pride in my little 6 yr old.
This is my daughters 2nd year in Mt. Washington Elementry. She is in first grade now. Our Kindergarten experience was great. The Teachers are wonderfull and she loves going to school. This school has a very stong PTA and high parent envolvement for a public school and that makes it a very special place. They use the 'Open Court' reading system, which I am not crazy about - but my daugher is functioning well with it. For a public school in LA unified - I feel I couldn't do much better - however, I do feel that a more individualized private shcool would be an improvement. So much of what is taught in public school is geared toward acheiving high test scores and not towards individual needs.
The school promotes itself well. However, that all it is: promotion.
