Palms Elementary school is a GREAT school. My child attends palms and has attended since kindergarten. I have nothing but admiration for the school staff as a whole. The administration is caring and have the school best interest at heart. My child has had the best elementary experience here at palms, and that is because of the excellent staff along with his learned love for school through this amazing staff. The diversity is soothing, the unity is heartfelt and wish nothing but the best in the continued growth of this amazing school. Signed, a happy parent
I am a teacher at Palms Elementary school and I would like to share a few words about my school. First, I am very proud to work here at Palms. I love the diversity, the parent involvement, the student participation and dedication to learning, the staff's (including assistants, paraprofessionals, support staff, teacher and administration's) dedication to our students learning and well being. We have come a long way as a community with our extra curricular activities, high test scores and high expectations of all stake holders. I am proud of my administration for supporting our entire staff. I am proud of our parents for their support and dedication to their children and the trust they have in our programs. I am proud of our student who work hard and make our school shine. I am proud of our teachers who go the extra mile to instill in our students the excitement of being life long learners! I love Palms Elementary School and I hope I can stay here for a very long time!
I am a Parent at Palms Elementary. My son has attended since Kinder. I don't have nothing to say except to try not to get a teacher by the name "Mrs. Kramer" and now she goes by "Ms. Gutman". She will make your life and your child life a nightmare, but overall ALL the teachers are amazing. They truly care about your child's education. Mr. Spencer and Ms. Villafranca are the greatest. Mrs. Karzai is an angel from heaven. Our school administration are very friendly and very helpful. The school offers a wide variety of activities for the students to take part of like drill team, folkloric mexican dancing, storytelling program, gardening program and even have Zumba for the parents. It is because of schools like this one that our children exceed in our communities.
We are returning parents and are tremendously eager to help our girls achieve the best they can in school. I know this can happen as long as the school remains under the care of Mr. Abrams who shows true dedication to the school, the students and the parents. And not just a body or a number as was the case at previous school. As long as Palms leader remains solid in having high educational standards and not settle for mediocre then this school will succeed. Palms needs financial support from all areas. Music, Art, Academic Boot Camps
Hello I am a parent of a 2nd grader and Kinder. other parents should know that Palms elementary has a nurse on duty only one day a week, Mondays. Kids at Palms E. are very friendly. This school will only improve of teachers are sent for seminars or by making this school a charter school. Mrs Macgovern is excellent teacher. Mrs Alston needs to go to seminars. This School needs a field for Physical Education and sports.
We reluctantly started Palms El. this year in Kinder...and could not be more blessed! So far, so great. Mr. Spencer is a wonderful teacher and the principal, Mr. Abrahams, is working so hard to keep the school on an upward path! I agree with the parent that said 'don't let the ratings on this website fool you.' I have personally come across some whacky ratings of schools, good and bad, that simply have me shaking my head as to How on Earth that rating was given. Having knowledge of some of the schools this website rates, its difficult to continue to trust the GS ratings system. I do look to the website's Parent Reviews and am so happy that most of the Palms reviews are positive as I believe we are here to stay. So many great things [from administrators] about Palms Middle School! "You'd be lucky to get in" they say. Palms El. is on its way to that stature as well. And those of you concerned about the "English Learners" in the school, wow. Do you realize what city you're in? Get over it - and used it - and stay involved with your kids' education. Don't sleep on Palms El...or better yet, leave! Smaller classes left for my child! No, really, its been great so far!! Give it a chance!
Palms Elementary School is for the parent and student who want to be successful. The principal at the school not only does his principal duties, but he also makes time to assist the parents needs to make the students successful. I am a single mother with many needs, my son has been at Palms Elementary since kindergarden (it's been 3yrs now). I wouldn't change him now if he was excepted into Harvard. I have a since of SAFETY while my child is attending school. The staff has always been very helpful and friendly. I am proud to be a Parent at Palms Elementary School.
My daughter is currently attending this school, we moved to LA Last Feb 2011 she entered 2nd grade with amazing transition, as she came from a charter school from another city. This is our second year at Palms and i have to say that they have the most amazing teachers and school leadership. I am very happy with my daughter's grades, academic awards and test scores. I would strongly recommend Palms Elementary to all parents! When i first read the reviews here before she entered the Los Angeles District, i was bummed out at the ratings because of the API score.. etc.. I tried enrolling her at Castle Heights but we were not in their district... however.. we are very fortunate to be at Palms, as she is progressing and getting advanced academic education. Palms is definitely under-rated on this website! A lot of smart students graduating from this school, I have talked to many other parents and I am glad that my daughter is one of the students of Palms! :) Great School! Don't let the ratings on this website fool you! :)
when my daughter in preschool, the teachers said she is smart. we are prepared to kindergarten, the teacher said we have to find a school that have challenge for our kid and school in the magnet school in Brentwood. we are find information on the Brentwood School, they said to kindergarten there only for the area because it has no transport, the next class can. they recommend according to school district, when they know the Palms Elementary School our district, they said we are very lucky because the principal Palms was a former vice principal of Brentwood magnet school. wow...we are very happy ... thank God. Our daughter now attend school at the Palms Elementary School.
My daughter has been attending Palms Elementary since kinder garden she is on her last year of elementary this year, overall the experience has been good. I have to recognized Mr. Spencer and Mr. Orellana for their outstanding and excellent job they do to make sure students have the best education. The pricipal makes a huge effort to get involved with the different activities the school offers to the students.
I feel so lucky that, in these unfortunately economic times, we have a local school that has a garden, drill team, dance and drama classes, camping trips, and music instruction. Two of my kids have been here for 2 years and each of their teachers has been caring, talented and committed. The principal knows every kid by name, dances with the drill team (on special occassions!), and puts on his sweats every Friday to coach basketball. Our school has a lot of English learners and kids who come from economically disadvantaged families, but it still manages to shine.
I wrote the review on October 8, 2010 and have to say I take most of my words back. He has had a pretty bad year, and I obviously wrote the review too early to tell. I wanted to feel positive. I agree more with the parent who wrote the Feb 3rd 2011 review. The school is powerless when it comes to the chilren's behavior. Those children are being brought up to ridicule people who are different looking then they are, and come from different backgrounds.
Not a good school at all. Our child attended that school for 2 months and we had to change the school. The teachers were ok but a couple times our son were bitten up by other children in the courtyard (our son was new in the school) and the principal couldn't stop it. Likely, we found another public school were our son is excited to go and easily made new friends.
My son went there for Kinder, and then we moved for a year and his grades dropped, his reading proficiency dropped as well. When we came back Summer 2010 and he came back to Palms Elementary to start 2nd grade, he started getting better reading scores. His math was improved and his social skills improved once again. The staff and the Principal along with the many parents that volunteer make this school a great place to have your children learn. I have never seen so much support from the local businesses as well. The corner ProVideo and the Palms Market are just a few of the many businesses that help and support the school unconditionally. The after school program " Para Los ninos" is by far one of the best after school programs I have ever been part of. The school also offers extra curricular activities such as an award winning drill team, a Folklorico dance group, and an orchestra. No other public elementary around the area that I know offers anything like this free. I cannot be more pleased with the school. Thank you Palms Elementary for you hard dedication, commitment and unconditional support to the children and their parents.
This is our first year at Palms, entering in the 3rd Grade. My son is demographically the minority here. I was concerned, but not any longer. He is having an enriching year so far, has an amazing teacher, and socially he is doing better than ever. I am listened to, and am very involved with his teacher. His teacher is motivating and making all of the difference. She has a super class this year. It doesn't matter where a child goes to school, because with the right teacher and supplies, a child can learn anywhere. This school has everything necessary to teach students. The campus is clean and bright, the classrooms are the same. There's room for everything. I am impressed with the library. The staff appears supportive. Perhaps in the past the school went through transitions, but that appears to be remedied in a positive way.
Palms Elementary has been identified as one of the many schools with a low Academic Performance Index (API) Report for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school year.
I wanted to address the low API scores at this school- they in no way reflect the quality of the education that our kids receive at Palms. Many of the students are learning English for the first time (UCLA graduate housing feeds into Palms and there are many students whose parents are here for a few years- it's made this school an incredible incubator of culture and economic diversity). Our children are in the GATE track and SAS program, participate in electives (ranging from computers to baking and newspaper) and after-school, teacher-run programs like Ballet Folklorico and Chess. As a parent, teachers here have always encouraged and followed through, providing our kids with an advanced curriculum when we asked. Our fifth grader is on par in terms of the quality of the work assigned as his friends at St. James and another private school.
The KCC, Kinder collaborative class is excellent. The two teachers work together wonderfully and it is a great placement for a higher functioning special needs child. Unfortunately the rest of the school is in transition. It is getting better but has a long way to go.
Palms is a school that nutures ALL children. The Principal,Vice Principal, and many of the teachers, take time out of their busy schedules to ensure everyones' needs are meet. Keep up the good work and test scores, which seem to be the main focus rather than a well rounded education, will undoubtedly increase! :)
