My child attends Palms Middle School and the last 2 years she has received instruction from really good teachers. The good teachers are organized, supportive and strive to make the children understand what they teach in an effective way. They make sure we (the parents) are informed of our child's progress (good or bad), so that we have an opportunity to help before things get worse. Then there are a couple of not-so-good teachers who devote class time to those students who excel, embarass those who don't quite 'get it' and never return calls to a concerned parent whose child is struggling with a particular subject. It is unfortunate that these kind of teachers have the power to negatively influence your child's academic outcome. Perhaps offering incentives to those good teachers (they are the students' favorites) will influence the not-so-good ones (disliked by students and parents) to do a better job.
i used to go to Palms Middle School form six grade to the seventh grade..its an excellent school..they teach the kids excellent behavior and there are just woderful teachers at palms. The best teacher was Ms. Garret. She tought seventh grage history , i used to hate history and after i have her as my histery teacher, i fell in love with acient history.
Palms is much better than most public schools all & all. I'm a 7th grader and so far it's been okay. I don't recommend a parents forcing their child to do here though because the student themselves has to have a motivation for learning if their going to succeed. Although councilors might talking to kids who are failing horribly, not much time is spent to try and help or encourage students who visibbly are not trying to get anything done. If parents want to talk to techers they can schedule a conference, but it's up to them to talk to their child about any issues he/she may have. Palms does not offer a wide variety of extracirricucular activities, or any after school programs We don't spend much time discussing topics and have to demonstrate our knowledge in other ways like creative projects.
I have been very happy with Palms and will miss it when my child culminates this June. The only shortfalls at this school are caused by the District. The leadership at Palms is exceptional and makes the school the success that it is.
My daughter has just started in the 6th grade magnet program. She has had major anxiety, which has been a serious issue. I am thrilled that her teachers and the principal has worked to help us work together on this. Her teachers for the major subjects are fantastic! There is quite a lot of homework, but it complements the class work and is not redundant. The teachers are engaging, kind and present classes in an enthusiastic manner. Academics are high, but are complimented by other elective programs. My daughter is learning a wind instrument, and despite her anxiety, is happy.
My son is in his third year at Palms. I was really impressed with the transitional program Palms provided for incoming 6th graders. However, some of the teachers are very dismissive and show little concern when a student is struggling academically. I phoned one teacher 3x and received no return phone call. I also did not receive proper notice from this teacher of my son's academic struggles so that I could have dealt with this problem accordingly. His teachers this year for fall 2006 seem to be more organized and provided a syllabus which makes it easier for the parents to keep up with assignments due. Great counselors, nice principal, wonderful music program and a decent school. However, my younger son will be attending another middle school.
This is my first year at Palms and I love it! Very diverse environment, and a great learning environment! Love the teachers, especially Dr. Rockwell, Mr. Clair, and Mr. Kaplan.
this is my daughter 2nd year at Palms. She will be in the 8h grade this fall 2006. I feel the school should inform parent's prior to your child's report card if they are in need of help. I do not feel the communication between the teachers and counselors with the parents is adequent. So I sometimes wonder if it is adequent when the students need their help. I do feel the school is very diverse and there are fair less problems compared to alot of other schools.
My daughter has attened PMS since 6th grade, she will be graduating from 8th grade next week. I have been rather pleased with her teachers. Her English teacher is strick but I really like her. She teacher the class as if they are already in high school. From what I see the parent involvment is alright.
The teacher/student ratio is too high. There is no room for any individual attention or help. There is very little supervision it seems. The environment is a difficult one to learn in.
Palms is a great school. My daughter goes there and I'm very happy w/ it. Very demanding teachers but the results are visible. Has a great orchestra with dedicated teacher. Very talented and competitive students.
Very mixed demographic, more than pleased with the teachers. Excellent music program. Very good with transitioning elementary kids to middle school program.
The Gifted Magnet Program attracts diverse students from different backgrounds and areas. Despite occasional use of metal detectors, in general there is generally a tranquil, close-knit feeling at the school.
I had two children go through Palms, the most recent one culminated June 05. The school prepared them well but I will agree with many prior comments that teaching is uneven. It is important to understand that Palms has been administratively challenged for a number of years and this has affected teacher morale. The school used to be better than it is and I think it is in danger. There's more than one way to meet the so-called achievement gap and one of them is to decimate what was once an exccellent middle school...that way, it doesn't appear as good compared to some of the other LAUSD poorly performing schools. Magnet is a gigted/high ability program and better at what it does than many other magnets are at what they do. This school needs attention from the District before it erodes completely.
We got a New Principal in 2005. Also many Admin. and VP left for other schools. Hard to determine change is for better/worse.
Palms is not a bad school - compared to the alternatives. The kids are mostly doing well, but there is nothing special here. And the school plant (building and grounds) could use work. But its better than other schools in the area.
The counselors in Palms Middel School are really great ones. My kid is now in 7th grade, his counselor gave a special program for my kid when my kid entered 6th grade, which my kid is enjoying and benifits lots.
My son attended Palms last year as a sixth grader and it was a terrible experience not just for him, but for us, his parents. It is nearly impossible to wade through the office system and the principal never returned any of our phone calls. We found that at the end of the school year, not one teacher nor administrator had even read through our son's cum folder. As an educator myself, I was shocked and horrified at the unprofessional conduct of the principal and teachers which my son had. He is now in another school and the difference is amazing.
Pro: Honors courses and gifted magnet, 8th grade I-Search. Con: Large school/class size, uneven teaching quality even at the Honors level. However, my daughter emerged well-prepared for high school and had a handful of excellent teachers. Still the best middle school on the Westside.
