My daughter is in 7th grade at the Palms Magnet. We could not have been happier. Our daughter is thriving, academically and socially. We have had great teachers who have inspired her to push the envelope. Dr. Moriuchi is a very collected and an approachable presence at school. The involved parent group is another great plus.

Handles bullying effectively: Neutral

I am neutral only because we havent come across bullying so have no opinion on how the school handles such cases.

Amount of homework: Strongly disagree

Palms has experienced teachers who work WITH each other to co-ordinate homework. Many of the teachers have school age children of their own so they understand the pressures on today's kids and they don't give busy work. They also realize that math takes practice and provide an appropriate amount to keep their skills sharp.

My eldest daughter graduated from Palms Middle School 2 years ago and I have a younger daughter in 7th grade. We have had an exceptional experience. The teachers and administrators are experienced, knowledgeable and caring. The true test of Palms Middle School can be seen when the kids move on to high school - Palms kids excel wherever they go. Some go on to private high schools and easily hold their own with their peers. In public high schools they are generally the most prepared and hardworking students. It's a wonderful community school with a strong parent body called Friends of Palms who are involved and invested in making the school great for ALL the kids.

My wife and I have sent our two kids to Palms. They both had very positive experiences there. The teachers are experienced and enthusiastic. The music program is top notch. Both of our daughters have made good friends at the school.

Palms middle school is our neighborhood school, and we ended up discovering Palms through an unexpected detour. Like many westside parents with bright kids, we were concerned about our children's learning and social development. After touring Palms and every other imaginable middle school for our older daughter a few years ago, we ended up selecting a smaller private school. Our daughter quickly outgrew the "benefits" of a smaller school with "average but wealthy kids" and "highly variable" teachers. She begged us to go to Palms, which she joined later on in 8th grade and where she blossomed in all honors classes. The size of the school and the diversity which we had thought would be problems, actually turned out to be right kind of fit for her and for our family. Throughout her time time at Palms, we were so impressed with the teachers and the administrative staff: very sharp and caring people! When it was time send our second daughter to middle school, we did not tour any other middle schools and went straight to Palms. Our second child is in the gifted magnet and there too is having wonderful, stimulating, caring teachers who REALLY know about differentiated education. There is a strong and growing core of neighborhood parents who are involved and the summer transition activities, fundraising, and work well with the administration. I would recommend that all westside parents give very close look at Palms middle school. It may not be the most glamorous but true education is about stimulating our kids brains with enthusiasm and passion for learning and growing. Finally, Palms well-established exceptional music program and choir, the arts programs, the trip to Washington etc need to be better publicized so that parents really know and understand what the school offers!

The Support Staff have no people skills. I wanted to report a Lice Infestation and they stated that they are unable to do anything about it. So I guess they just don't want their attendance to drop because that means less money coming in. This is a disservice to students well-being.

I enjoyed visiting the school! I've had great experience as an aunt and a family friend would students who attend the school. I wish my son could attend Palms as well.

Why we chose Palms: 1- Palms has a long history of excellent academics taught by experienced educators, many of whom have taught at this school for many years. We believe they know how to effectively implement the common core into their teachings. As a teacher friend said, "Teachers don't leave a good program." 2- Palms has an excellent and fun music program. 3- We wanted our daughter to attend a district school. We felt it was important to support a local public school and we appreciated the multi-racial and diverse population at Palms. Her view of the world will be enriched by this experience. 4- Palms will provide our child with the best education to meet the challenges of nearby magnet high schools. I would like to add that while the appearance of this campus may not be as attractive as others, Palms spends money where it is needed most and we are satisfied with that. We spent months talking to families and teachers whose kids recently graduated and are currently enrolled. No one had anything bad to say. The comments were positive. Our daughter is in the 6th grade SAS program. She comes home happy, has met many new friends, likes her teachers, has excellent grades and is blossoming into a confident adolescent.
