STAR Education will be opening a new after-school enrichment program on the campus of Westport Heights Elementary School in Westchester, CA. The program will begin in fall 2004 and will offer one-of-a-kind programming, including classes in the performing arts and filmmaking as well as academic support. The school's visionary new principal is eager to work with STAR Education to transform Westport Heights Elementary by raising test scores, providing award winning after-school programming, and building a strong sense of community. STAR Education is the pioneer in enrichment education, and continues to be the leading program in raising test scores. In addition to programs on campuses throughout Los Angeles, STAR Education s programs on the campuses of Cowan, Kentwood, and Loyola Village Elementary Schools have established STAR as a dedicated member of the Westchester community. STAR is thrilled about the new partnership with Westport Heights.
Westport Heights has provided my daughter with a emotionally nurturing and yet academically challenging Kindergarten experience. Her teacher, who is always positive, has been able to balance the rigors of teaching to California's standards and creating a positive learning environment for each student. I am so grateful for such a positive educational experience! Bravo!
The SRLDP at Westport Heights deteriorated significantly during the 2003/2004 school year. As opposed to the 2002/2003 school year, instruction and homework during the current year is not based on current knowledge of the important features of a good preschool program. I don't believe either of the two teachers (or the principal) could define phonological awareness or discuss it's critical importance in a school readiness/language development program. At the beginning of the year, one of the teachers was asked what phonemic awareness activities would be included in the program. The teacher replied that the children were only four and didn't need to be bothered with those kinds of activities. This was a very strange response given that measures of phonemic/phonological awareness are the single best predictors of reading success for children entering kindergarten! Preschool prgrams do not automatically give kids an academic advantage, they must be intelligently designed and taught.
My son had special ed needs with a d.d. iep, not too extreme just needed extra help focusing & staying on tasks. Westport Heights had the perfect collaborative class for PreK & teachers worked well together with same philosophy to give him an excellent year with nuturing special attention he required to thrive. Thanks Ms Saez & Mrs. Jennifer Trombetta teachers who care can do so much. A refreshing contrast to the pensioners who ar emailing it in every day. Kudos - Principal Fay Jones runs a nice school.
In 2001, we relocated from Switzerland. Our daughter joined the Westport Heights School in September, but did not speek English. She was first able with a very nice bilingual (English/French) teacher who helped her a lot to make progress, but it seems that other parents made pressure to have my daughter moved out from that class because they felt that to much time was dedicated to her. A few days later without any official notice, we learned that she was moved to another class where the teacher completely ignored her during class time. She just asked my daughter to read her french book or draw all day long. My daughter was supposed to attend the ESL programm, but there was only one or two sessions then no more. This made our relocation attempt fail and we had to move back to Europ. Looking back we strongly feel that my daughter has been discriminated.
