Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Nothing but amazing things to say about our experience at VLS. The teachers and staff make the school. Its a caring enviroment that allows children to prosper.

My 2 kids have been going to First Lutheran since Kindergarten. They are now in 5th and 6th grades. As a parent you always wonder if you are doing the right thing with the kids. As a Yale Graduate and product of the Manhattan Beach school district I will say that this is the best thing I have ever done for my little guys. The other schools in town are okay but quite frankly way overpopulated and most of the the teachers who can never be fired at the public schools are just there for the paycheck...total b team. There are about ten kids a grade a FLV and have an incredible soccer culture. If you are not in the school band you are in the school play...etc etc...think going to school in a very small town in America. If you freak out about religion or homework then dont send your kid there as they teach religion and you will have homework every night. Funny thing is that one of my kids is a believer and the other is on the fence...ha. Bottom line...great school ...amazing families...and the kids are always doing something fun and learning values instead of rap.

Change is hard for many people. Our principle is retiring after 30 years of dedicated service to this wonderful school and our board of Education has decided not to renew our 5th/6th grade teacher contract for next year. Naturally, some people are upset about these changes. Though the 5th/6th grade teacher was loved by many, there have also been complaints about her teaching methods. My child has been at this school since Kindergarten, is currently in 7th grade and we are very happy here. We personally love that teacher and are not happy that she isn't coming back but that's not our decision to make and I trust our board of Ed to find a good replacement. I've also met the new principle and I believe she will be a perfect fit. This is an excellent school with top notch curriculum, a caring, loving staff, and very involved parents. Take the time to visit and talk to parents and staff members and you'll see for yourself. Gossip is not the best way to find a school for your child.

Before considering this school ask the following questions: How many families have left in the past few years and why? Why is the principal leaving? Was this his choice? Are the teachers accredited? Is the school accredited? With the dramatic declining enrollment what is the likelihood the school will be able to remain open. Ask to speak to members of this school's board of education to get the real answers.

Our child, who was one of those "leg holding / I don't want to go to school kids at first", loves Venice Lutheran, and is growing intellectually, emotionally and spiritually each day. I can't recommend a better school for anyone looking for a christian / family centered school for their child.

Moving from Europe to the US was a big step. But deciding for a school for our daughter was maybe even more difficult. We visited a couple of scholls but no school felt so friendly, safe and in a way familiar than Venice Lutheran. The way they teach and guide at VLS is with a real personal approach . the small sizes of the classes helps with that ofcourse but the teachers at VLS are super involved and take so much care in teaching the kids. Our daughter is currently in 8th grade and it will be an emotional farewell....

As a retired public school teacher, I have been doing substitute teaching at Los Angeles Westside independent schools for the past 14 years. I look forward to and am excited to substitute at Venice Lutheran School. I am welcomed warmly by the faculty, staff, students, and parents. With high academic standards, Venice Lutheran School provides a quality education in a caring, kind, supportive, structured environment. It is impressive how academically prepared the students are compared to students at other independent schools. The small class sizes allow the experienced teachers to concentrate on individual students making sure that each student has mastered essential skills. Students build genuine self-esteem by striving for and achieving academic excellence. Unlike most elementary and middle schools, Venice Lutheran incorporates a foreign language, Spanish, into their curriculum. With an emphasis on good moral values, students are respectful, cooperative, well-behaved, well- adjusted, and happy. Venice Lutheran turns out academically strong, well-mannered learners who are prepared to succeed in secondary schools. This teacher has the highest regard for Venice Lutheran School.

I currently teach Soccer at this School with eurosoccerusa.com and have found the Teachers, Staff and Children to be nothing less than brilliant. It seems to be a family environment and never have I seen any drama tears or mischief. The kids are super smart, well dressed and parents well to do people. Principle Mr Rusch loves the kids like their his own and I wouldn't hesitate bringing my own kids here when they are older. Long may their hard work pay off as thse kids are definetely going places.

I do not know what I would do without Venice Lutheran School. They have been instrumental in my child's development on every level: intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual. The children at this school learn how to be wonderful contributing members to our community. My child loves her school. She hates missing a day for anything. She has so much fun and they have really fostered a love of learning in her.

A wonderful, caring school with less than 90 students. Small class sizes, teachers who have master's degrees, and a postive environment. Must see to believe!

Everyone hears reports about petulant parents who shelter their spoiled children from any sort of accountability in school, sports, or life. They give the world to their children on a silver platter and wonder why those same children struggle at the first sign of difficulty in their lives. The negative posts here demonstrate this exact attitude from a small clique in this school. The teachers, especially those in middle school, require excellence from children and will settle for nothing less. The parents who are posting negative reviews here (and I doubt that there are more than one or two parents who are posting under multiple email addresses) would rather that the teachers reinforce their children s behavior, regardless of whether that behavior is constructive or positive, instead of genuinely work with those student to develop a positive character, strong work habits, and intellectual curiosity. I m proud that we send our child to a school with only 80-90 students where they are taught by a faculty (most of whom have advanced degrees) which has a proven record of caring support for growing young minds. If that's what you want for your kids, this is the place for you.

Although I have elected to not give my children any religious upbringing, I enrolled them in this school because I felt that a small educational environment would be conducive to preparing them for the rigors of a post-secondary education. Unfortunately, this school is inadequate in every respect. From using video cassettes to teach children Spanish (yes, really!) to a science curriculum that denies them a chance to learn about evolutionary biology, this school was an exasperating experience for all of us. Simply incorrigible.

I have two children at this school, one in middle school. As you can see from the comments, it is not for everyone. However the majority of us are able to enjoy the tight knit community, the personal care given to our children's education and the respectful behavior the school instills. If you don't mind a place with old fashioned values, and believe in small class size as a major plus, then this little school may work for your family.

It appears that one disgruntled parent is leaving multiple negative reviews about our school. I hope that anyone reading these reviews will take note of that. VLS is an amazing, small school that dedicates itself to the children. These children are taught to be independent learners, to treat each other with kindness, and they leave this school fully prepared for high school. If you are looking for a school where your children will face consequences and be held responsible, then VLS is for you. If you want a school where your child doesn't have to meet deadlines, isn't held accountable, and has their hand held throughout the middle school years, then you might look elsewhere. I honestly can say this school is a gift to my child in many ways.

Venice Lutheran is a great school! My son is in 4th grade and has been at the school since kindergarten. Initially I had been concerned because he has a reading disability. But the school has bent over backwards to accommodate him and he is flourishing. The principal and staff are terrific. Above all, it is a loving caring environment.

What a great school! I have had two children here. The first graduated and we found this school not only prepared her for high school but offered her a lot of great choices for high school as the reputation of the school is very good in the community. The school is known for high testing scores and turning out well educated, well rounded kids which helped in the admission process ! My second child is still there and flourishing as well. The attention he gets in the small class room is priceless and it shows in his grades and work habits. The school fosters good relationships between the students doing such things as having the older kids read to the younger kids and help them with things they need. Will really miss this community when my son graduates. I highly recommend this school!

We love Venice Lutheran for our children! It is a great community of families and the teachers and staff really care about the students here. With small class sizes, the academics are strong and they have a wonderful music program, as well as sports and other afterschool activities. While the students come from diverse backgrounds, we really appreciate the Christian and moral values that are taught here. It is a safe place for middle school kids and technology is regularly incorporated in the classroom. We highly recommend this school!

My daughter has flourished in her time at Venice Lutheran School! She is learning to read and problem solve with the guidance of loving teachers! She tends to be shy but has grown in confidence in this very nurturing environment. I appreciate that the school listens when parents bring suggestions and that the entire VLS community - students, staff, parents, and volunteers from the church that supports the school - all want to see each student become a well-rounded, productive citizen with good study and work habits. We are very happy with VLS!!!

We had been to 3 different schools before we found Venice Lutheran. This is the perfect school for our kids. Its small classroom size allows for the attention our kids need to learn. The teachers are willing to help do what it takes to make our kids successful. And the school's emphasis on integrity and character building are not found in public schools. This has been a blessing and the foundation we want our children being taught.

I too am a parent at this wonderful school. I am not affiliated with any religion, however I am not opposed to the structure and guidance a parochial school offers. The principal is hands on and walks children to their parents vehicles everyday after school and after teaching classes all day. The classes are small enough that the teachers can cater to each students abilities and needs. I've been at this school long enough to see students go on to prestigious universities with honors. The music department alone is amazing and worth the tuition. As far as private schools go, this is truly a gem.

My son has been at the school for a few years and is very happy there, I can see from homework and schoolwork that he is learning at a high level and his growing knowledge is impressive I have to give full credit to his teachers and how seriously the school takes the student's education as I work full time. The tuition is affordable. The children are polite and well mannered, I would highly recommend the school.

Last night Venice Lutheran had a screening of the documentary RACE TO NOWHERE. After seeing this film I am even more convinced that our children are attending a school that fits our priorities. The school places an emphasis on instilling the love to learn instead of pressuring the teachers and students to make the test scores because no child is exactly the same. Now more than ever I believe that this school is a great place to grow. The fact that this school is even willing to have this dialogue with parents and the community at large says a lot about the principal and teachers openness to new ideas.

As a parent of First Lutheran School for many years now, we feel the school speaks for itself. It has been there for over 60 years & the principal for over 25 years, how many schools can match that? Our Alumni students who have graduated have gone on to superior Hi Schools & Colleges. The school is SAFE, free from drugs & violence. It teaches a strong moral value. It is a small town feel in a big city. We wouldn't be any where else!

Very religious. School lacks leadership. Poor middle school. One teacher has been known to ridicule and shame students in front of class. Accreditation allowed expire. Too late to renew and Principal is advocating against reapplying. Combined classes. Excellent third and fourth grade teacher.

very bad middle school, lacking leadership from the Principal who seems to notice nothing. Poor teaching especially in Math area. Students are taught that non Christians go to hell. WEIRD Favoritism is very heavy in this school. Wish I had never sent my kid here. Not worth the money. Not meeting grade level for charter/public schools.......

What rare find and special school! From the school's principal and small campus to the mixed grade classroom and art and music programs, this Venice Lutheran may just be be the best kept secret in West LA. The principal was honored by the City of LA for his commitment to assuring the talents of all of our youth are developed to their maximum potential, and commended him for displaying a beautiful example of how learning and leadership are indispensable to one another. For our children this school continues to be a great place to learn and grow.

FLV is an excellent school. My daughter attended Kindergarten and First grade at the school until we were transfered back to Louisiana. My daughter enjoyed her time at FLV and it is the standard that she and I compare her current school. She received an Excellent education in a safe and caring environment. She was provided with many educational opportunities that continue to positively impact on outlook on education, friendship and faith. FLV is an extended family and it is 'A Wonderful Place to Grow'. My daughter misses her friends and teachers and would love to return to school at FLV. Great School! Great Experience!

Our daughter recently started kindergarten here and we couldn't be happier. The class size is small, her teacher is very focused and the parents all seem truly vested in the school. I can't imagine a school I'd rather send her too. I am so glad we found this place.

FLV has been a gift to our family. Our children are receiving a exceptional education. The staff and parent involvment is above and beyond what is standard for schools. The school is like an extended family, a place where everyone from the youngest to the oldest truly care for each other.

This is such an excellent school! They have high expectations academically, and the teachers and staff genuinely love and care for the students. My child attended Coeur d'alene elementary first, and while it was fine academically, there was very little parent-teacher interaction. First Lutheran is a small school where teachers work with parents to give the best possible education to each individual child. Children are taught values, mutual respect, and manners. These are missing from public schools and many private schools! First Lutheran is an excellent value for the impact it will have on your child's life.

FLV is an excellent school. Don't let the parochial aspect fool you; it s better than many high priced private schools in LA. A great education and where each child is known by all staff on a first name basis. The curriculum incorporates enrichment, music, art and whole child approach and wonderful principle. I too am surprised there s no wait list.

Our experience at First Lutheran was mixed. We loved the warm and friendly atmosphere, and there is a definite feeling of community. My biggest problem is that the school lacks leadership. We'll miss the wonderful aspects of this school but not the bad ones.

This small school is great if you start your children there right in kindergarden. The discipline is very strict ranging from the uniform to the dots on the 'i' and the bars on the 't', and if your kids come from a public school, the transition can be very rough. On another hand, they are working closely with the parents, and this can be a supportive community : you are engulfed in the school (and the church if you want to).

First Lutheran is a small and concentrated environment. Each class shares two grades; however, there are only 10 to 12 students per class so there are approx 20 to 24 students in each classroom. We have attended four years now and have excelled academically and embraced spiritually! We love the uniforms too! Be prepared though, the school requires a great deal of volunteer efforts not only for the sake of the children but for fundraising as well. I have found that the parents tend to be a bit 'clicky'; the volunteers v. the non volunteers, but if you can get past that the childrens' friendships seem to endure regardless!

This is a very good school. The teachers are dedicated, very experienced and are involved with the church too. Christian principals are encouraged. The band class is wonderful. It's small but I find that good because it enables the child to really learn music. On the down side I sometimes feel as though the kids should have a little more work. Because the teachers are splitting their time amongst various subjects, it doesn't seem as though the kids get enough devotion in any one particular are. Lastly, the tuition is somewhat reasonable, however, they keep going up. Bottomline, if you are looking for a good Christian school, you shouldn't pass this one up. I would send my child there again if I had to do it all over.
