Los Angeles is a very commute-driven city. Do you know where you'll be working yet?
There are phenomenal school districts and even standout schools in average districts, but it's going to depend on where you're living. In the San Fernando Valley and Ventura Counties, there are several districts that always come up--Las Virgenes Unified, Conejo Valley Unified, Simi Valley as well. In the parts of the San Fernando Valley there are great schools, La Crescenta schools are well-regarded. There are schools on the Westside of Los Angeles that people rave about. And certainly if you get into Orange County there are good schools as well.
If you haven't talked to the HR department where you work, talk to them now. Find out where people tend to live, and of those with kids, where the kids go to school. You might want to talk to a realtor and find out where the communities with great schools are from their perspective as well as the commute times you'd be facing.
