Four Steps to Choosing the Right School
Define the ideal school
Start the search
Prep for a school visit
Apply and enroll

Helping you define your ideal school:

That is from this site...but might I add, discover alternatives and do more research, so you know you are stepping out for the life of your child.
Expending a bit of time can save much heartache in the future when you look back wishing you found a better school for your loved one.

I assume public school enrollment is pretty similar everywhere. You bring proof of residency and proof of the child's age. In California, to start kindergarten, a student must be 5 by December 2nd.

Los Angeles Unified School District offers quite a few options in regard to school choice, including magnets, open enrollment, SAS, and charters. For more information on the process, I welcome parents to join the LAUSDParents group at http://community.greatschools.net/groups/13589
There we can walk parents through the processes and we have the most-asked-about links for information on LAUSD schools.

See you there! :)
