I have two kids at this school (for three years) and it's absolutely the most amazing education experience I've ever seen. both had been at more traditional schools before we found del sol. The constructivist educational philosphy is eye opening and my kids have a regenerated LOVE of learning. They have become true empowered scientists, writers, artists, philosphers, problem solvers and citizens of the world with a broader outlook than most their age because of their involvement in environmental and charitable endeavors thru the school. The problem solving, community involvement and conflict resolution practiced at this school has changed our entire outlook and enhanced our family in almost every aspect. The parent community is down to earth and wonderful and the staff is a part of that community - feels like a big family - truly!
This is a school unlike any other in the area. It is a constructivist based community where kids have the opportunity to LOVE learning. The parent participation is very high, and everyone seems to have the same goals in mind. This is not an 'academic' school in that the faculty does not 'push' kids to learn. Instead, kids learn at their own pace, and the results are quite amazing! Also, there is an emphasis on peer relations and problem solving, as well as taking personal responsibility.
del Sol is a magnificent social constructivist school. The teachers are really dedicated and the parent community is awesome. One huge family.
Via Pacifica offers social construstivist curriculum, whole child approach to education, multi age groups, no grading, a tiny but beautiful campus. It's a small family operation, a couple owns it, husband & daughter teaches, other 2 teachers have their kids at school as well. The teachers are pretty creative, especially Giselle. The classroom experience gets better in older classes. Yet, the owner/ director will negate most everything they're teaching to kids about problem solving & social intelligence in her interactions with parents, who often feel unheard and frustrated. While their approach to education can be amazing in theory, it doesn't always translate to practical reality. They tend to prioritize their idea of how things should be over attending to the indivudual needs of the actual children. As a result the school has been getting dramatically smaller each year.
