I'm giving my school an above average rating because this school offers a variety of classes ranging from Marine Biology to AP Art History. This school offers alot more classes than other schools in the area, but my problem with this school is that I don't feel challenged. No one pushes you to your potential. There are so many smart kids at my school who don't know it because either they're not motivated or not being pushed hard enough. Other than that it's a pretty good school, all the teachers are nice and it's a very easy going school.
I went to Capo in the late 80's. I was very intelligent, but was one of the students that fell through the cracks and dropped out. The school officials knew I was struggling with issues at home, but there was very little outreach to me. School should have been a sanctuary, a refuge from my crazy life, but it wasn't. As for the academic material, many of my classes were about memorizing information for tests - which I promptly forgot if I even bothered at all - there was zero critical thinking. I was the invisible and troubled child in the room that was never engaged. I ended up taking the GED the year after I should have graduated. There were quite a few students like me that you will never hear about, but we existed then and probably still do now. I went on to carry a 3.9 GPA in college and a successful career, so my story has a happy ending - but I know there are ones who aren't as lucky.
I went to Capo, as well as my older sister and younger brother! All three of my boys went to capo, my youngest is a senior this year! Gotta love Capo! Go Cougars!
Although my kids did not do particularly well in his class -- because it's tough and the students are required to think in depth about what they write -- they agree that Dr. Corbett was the best teacher they ever had. I'm glad he will not change his teaching style and will say the things that need to be said in order to help students develop into independent critical thinkers instead of automatons.
CVHS is really an amazing school that is a source of pride here in Mission Viejo. The biggest gem is the guidance department. My son's academic advisor did everything should could to take care of my son and he will be attending UC Berkeley next year after a great educational experience in the AP Program at this school. CVHS is unique because it has the IB Program as well, and my son took certificate classes from IB in Spanish and Physics. Many of the full diploma IB students are going off to amazing schools. Off the top of my head, there are graduates this year attending Stanford, Harvard, Penn, Washington University St. Louis, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Rice, Georgetown, Columbia, etc... The facilities are kept in great condition for an older school and a new theater will be built next year and open in 2010. Administration is great. Go Cougars!!
I am a parent of a Freshman at Capo and am thrilled my daughter is attending this school! The academics are challenging, the teachers are motivated to teach, and the Principal takes an active interest in the students. I've also received wonderful support from the Guidance dept.
The school is very excellent. But the administration at lunch, could be a little laid back. The Basketball team will go far if they acheive their goals.
My daughter is a senior at Capo and loves all the programs available. The administration walks around at lunch and break to associate with the students. The guidance counselors are fabulous. They are one of the few schools that has an IB program. There is a great community college across the street if that is the route your student will be taking. They have a great food service and the office is very organized and knows about the programs going on.
This school has done wonders for my daughter. She has so many opportunities at capo that I never would've believed existed. She loves its motivating atmosphere and the stimulating teachers. Capo is a great school for all students alike.
This school shows complete commitment to the students and both of my daughters are receiving an excellent education. A few classes are overcrowded, but overall most classes seem to have about 25-30 students. The teachers are very nice and sincere and work really hard for the students. The school has great clubs like the National Honor Society, Cougars for Character, and CSF and ieven though my kids aren't in AP or IB they are still doing fine. They hope to go to Arizojna State.
My son had an excellent time on the track program at CVHS and got looked at by good colleges. He is now attending Northwestern University and thanks Capo Valley for the quality of education he was given in the Advanced placement classes at the school.
This school has been wonderful for my child. She has recieved an excellent education from the school's rich AP program, although she did not take advantage of IB at the school. The AP class teachers were excellent and the school spirit was vibant. Everywhere you go in East Mission Viejo there are CV bumper stickers. The school student body is diverse and accepts all cultures and the sport teams were good. My child recieved varsity letters for track and field and is applying to UCLA, USC, and UCSD.
I have been pleased to see my child grow at the school into a great young individual. The school has an excellent advanced/honors program and is also good in sports. My daughter is a varsity basketball athlete and the team had a good season. My daughter is currently applying to UCLA, USC, UCSD, and Arizona State and is thankful for the good AP teachers she had sophomore and junior year. The teachers prepared her very well and she passed all her exams. The students are very accepting here and appreciate diversity and understanding others. Some of the students are consumed with material things like BMW's and expensive clothes, but most seem like good humble Mission Viejo kids.
Strong AP program which has been impacted by last year's establishment of an IB program. Dual AP/IB classes have been developed to support the IB, yet impact preparation of students for AP exams. We are not pleased.
I believe that Capistrano Valley is a fine school. The academic programs are on a high level. They offer AP classes and most recently a great addition, IB classes. There are numerous clubs to get involved with that encourage interactment with the community. I am satisfied with the school.
Our student is a new 9th grader. My comment is on the lack of counselors or guidance program in this district. There is no attempt to ensure that students have help in learning how to learn, learning about the world of work, learning to get along with others or learning to lead a balanced, healthy life. Academic achievement is meaningless to students who have no long-range plan, no advocate to help them navigate a complex system and no help with understanding the relevance of their schooling. This is a huge deficit. This lack of student support effects students, teachers and parents. What a shame.
This high school is excellent if your child is placed in the honors track. Both my husband and I graduted from here ten years ago and we have bachelors and masters degrees from ivy leagues and were very well prepared. My younger siblings just gradutaed from here as well and are going to Berkeley. Excellent AP classes.
This is a large but well rounded school. They care a lot about the students, though at times I felt like a number rather than a name. Overall a good school.
As a parent of a new incoming student, I feel sort of backed against a wall when we have no choice but to go to this school. It's pretty sad when we are forced to go to a school that is twice the distance from our nearest high school which is Mission Viejo high.
People at this school are very nice and have fun and enjoy their school day. Their football team is becoming very good due to new head coach Biehn.
