My son started 7th grade at Flex and is thriving in this learning environment! He is engaged and the small classroom size is excellent for him as he can get distracted easily. He loves that he gets a weekly plan and they break out into different working groups depending on the needs of the student. Tests are taken on-line so parents can see results immediately and track progress. They also have great clubs - one of which he really likes called "enrichment club" where they take field trips to educational places even silicon valley businesses. My son plays sports after school and thus he is able to schedule in homework around his weekly schedule. This is a free, public charter school located in Morgan Hill!
When my daughter was first exposed to this style of learning, she struggled to figure it out. It took determination and grit for her to not only catch up, but thrive in the curriculum. Once that happened, she became more confident and determined to keep her grades up.
This is the very model that I had been waiting for. It allows individuals to accelerate or slow down as they need to in order to grasp the information they need. The staff and head of school are outstanding. There is no stigma for slow learners, or bullying of advanced learners. There are no cliques. The clubs are first rate, and extremely inclusive. I love the school! And most importantly, my daughter loves the school.
This is a great public CHARTER school in northern Morgan Hill serving 6th -12th. Just 15 minutes from south San Jose and Gilroy. It is open to all students in California. If you can get your student to the school, they can attend!
We have been with this school since it's launch in 2011. It has been a Godsend to my child. He is thriving at this school. We love the flexibility, the structured learning labs where each student sits in his/her own cubicle with his/her own computer.
The online curriculum offers many more choices than a traditional school. He is now is high school and has access to over a hundred different electives online. The school also offers college course credit with it's partnership with local colleges.
The highly trained staff are wonderful and caring. They care about their students and go out of their way to make sure the students succeed.
As a parent, I also love the total transparency with regards to assignments and grades. I can access my child's weekly, monthly and yearly assignments at the click of my mouse. Similarly, I can look at his grades on a daily basis should I choose too. I am able to see what assignments he has turned in and what if any are missing. I have access to the individual grade he received on EACH assignment.
I am able to stay in touch and contact his teachers should I wish via an internal email system. Usually, I get a response the next day.
In addition, the school offers wonderful in school and after school programs.
The Enrichment Club allows students to take field trips once or twice a month to museums, universities and local tech companies. Just recently, they visited Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park. Last year, they went to San Jose State University, Google, and Intel to name a few.
There is a LEGO robotics club that competes in a national competition. The school has a MATHCOUNTS club and competition. There's a Chess Club, Music Club, Art Club and many others.
If you are looking for an alternative to the traditional school where overcrowded classrooms are failing to serve it's students, please check this school out. You will be very happy you did!
I've read a review that said this is not for independent learners and I have to disagree 100%... My daughter has an IEP for Reading, Math, Writing and Speech. She went from C's to all A's her first year at Flex, mind you we came from a "9" rated school prior to Flex. Prior to Flex she would get up go to school, go to tutor time, come home and do another 2 hours of homework then to bed. This wasn't a life for a kid! This year after school she takes advantage of Teacher Office hours & Homework Club. She leaves school and comes home to play. She has so much self-confidence it's crazy, she's even in two clubs! The school has clubs such as: Robotics, Math, Enrichment, Art, Chess, Spanish & Creativity (Odyssey of the mind)... The new Principal has changed the school from when it first opened into a now THRIVING and WONDERFUL school my daughter now calls her "fun" second home! I encourage you to come see it for yourself!
I have two children at Flex Academy now. I have to say that it is a wonderful school once you understand how the system works. My 2 children are very different, but they learn so much at this school compared to the local public school (high rating school) they used to go. Everything is tractable online, and students have to "learn" the subject before they can move on. The school has very organized weekly plan, and students will get training to become a independent learner. My son is definitely not those focus & organized students, but with lots of support from coach & teachers, he is actually doing well for his learning.
There are some negative reviews for the after school program. We have totally different opinion. As for the enrichment club, it's just one of the many after school activities Flex's PTO provided. My daughter is qualified to join the club, but my son is not. That's ok. I actually think it's better for my son not to join the club; otherwise, he will need to do his school work during weekend. My kids decided to join other club. Students have so many options. I also like the cross fit program (Flex students get discount )just right across the school. I talked to the coach for our expectations, and they trained my kids to reach that goal. This is a high quality PE class. I'd rather pay a little bit money to have high quality PE, then the free so-so PE class.
Overall, the school is getting better & better every year. We have a very excellent head of school, Ms. Wood, this year. She is already making lots of difference.
This school is definetly great for independent learners. I am a student at SV Flex Academy and I have some pros/cons about this school. The people here are amazing, and all of my friends are kind, so there is no bullying here AT ALL. They accept people with there diversity. But, the academics arent that great, nor the teachers. Since half of teachers are new this year, some of them don't have a clue what they are doing. Many teachers here can be strict at times... At Flex they provide this club called "Enrichment Club," for people who have A's and B's. They go on field trips and educational places. But for the people who dont have these grades, they cannot (unfortunetly) be in this club. This school plays favoritsm. They persuade the students to get good grades, but some cannot, even if they tried there hardest. This school tries to put on sports (like a normal school) but does not succeed half of the time, because there isn't enough volunteers or enough money to provied a coach. But I do reccomend this school for people who are independent and keep up with work well. Also for people who do well with computers. Again, this school is a perfect fit for people who are independent, some people might not be.
