Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

We chose Sequoia after having visited most of the middle schools in our area. We actually decided to school choice into Sequoia and are extremely pleased. The staff is excellent and very responsive. The teaching is very effective and the block system works well for our child. The music program is top notch as well as the sports options. All in all we are very happy.

In my experience the front office staff and counselors are unwilling to make any extra effort to meet the needs of students. Check out the note in the counseling office which basically limits communication to handwritten notes. This is a typical rule at Sequoia. It serves to make the counseling job easier rather than to foster communication with students. Students are widgets to be pushed to perform. There are no great inspiring adult role models here. Student behavior reflects this void. Certainly there are a handful of excellent teachers, but the best are reserved for the honors program. Then there are the teachers who pile on the homework as if to make up for their own inadequacies. Honors students dominate the "student" government which is chosen by the administration. If your student's enthusiasm for learning takes a nosedive while attending Sequoia it is not just a phase of adolescence, it is the pernicious school climate.

As a parent, I give Sequoia a '5' star rating because I've seen and heard the efforts given by the staff (as a whole), in helping our son adjust to what is, his new school and new state of residency. From the counselor down, through the teachers, everyone was willing to give all they could helping him in every way possible to bring him up to caliber and this, one does not see very often. They need be commended on their efforts! Sincerely, M. Marjorie Sortomme

i went to this school for 7th and 8th grade, and it was a great school. I highly recommend this school for your child, as it has a great balance of supervision at break/lunch, great teachers, and good activities to get involved with, such as choir (which i highly recomment), sports, etc. Plus, there is guided study if you are having a hard time after school for an hour a few days a week. :)

I agree with the comments dated June 27, 2007. My son is also very bright but due to ADHD (and possibly Asperger's) has great difficulties with organization and rembering to write down, do, and turn in assignments. He scores in the 99th percentile on standardized tests but is getting C's and D's. I have had several SST meetings to no avail. The school has no interest in helping, and says he is doing fine as he is 'passing'. He is very stressed out and no longer enjoys school or even wants to try. His self-esteem is going downhill fast and he is developing behavior issues. None of the teachers are willing to help other than to berate him. I will be pulling him out of this school as soon as I can. I have since heard from a number of parents and psychologists that Sequoia is the worst middle school in the district if you have a child that doesn't fit into their mold for learning styles. I understand that Redwood is the best.

I think my school is wonderful! I just love all my teachers! I am in all honors classes and it is difficult, but I have managed to pull 4 A+'s and 2 A's! This school really is great. I am also in ASB and help take care of my school, like the motto. I hope my review helped anyone who wants their child to come to Sequoia! :)

I have two children that have attended Sequoia. I feel that the guided study program that Sequoia has in place is wonderful. At a stage in my children's lives when they were not interested in communicating with me about their homework, the Guided Study program did that for them. If they weren't keeping up with what they were supposed to be doing in their classes, I would know right away, because they would get guided study. I think it has forced them to develop their responsibility and improve their homework skills. It is an effective way for the teachers to let parents know if their children are keeping on track with what is expected of them. Brilliant idea!

My son, being very bright but rather short on responsibility, organization, and work-ethic, has been a challenge his sixth-grade year at Sequoia. Unfortunately, we haven't had a lot of help or communication from his teachers, as he'll sometimes do something wrong or not at all for months without anyone letting us know so that we can deal with it, and as a result he is primarily learning to avoid responsiblity, and not achieving much of the potential that we all know he can. A number of other students have had similar problems and transferred out of Sequoia, although many seem to remain and manage. Maybe Sequoia needs better-rounded policies and practices to better help all of their students...

Quality of academic programs is mixed. Some are great, some are not. There seems to be some old teachers who have been in the profession for 20 years or more who have a sour attitude towards teens and education. Student teacher ratio is also very high in certain classes, upwards of 35 to 1

This is my family's 1st year at Sequoia. It has been a wonderful school for a 6th grade experience. As a parent, I know the staff is looking out for these new students in such large surroundings.

I think Sequoia Middle School is a great school. The teachers work with children so that each lesson is mastered.
