Using Character Counts, our students respect Teacher, Staff, and parents. I have never seen a student disrespect any adult on campus.

The staff always makes sure no child goes hungry. They make sure that any child who needs school supplies, school clothes, food for their home, and emotional support. Our PTA supports our students in this capacity and so do our Teachers. The schools actions show our students how to be empathetic to other students who need support or help. So many students confide in the staff if they see another student hurting or in need.

They use the Character Counts platform and they acknowledge any child that shows great character. Our teachers and parents follow this Character counts model and instill it at home. Johns tons students are well behaved, honest, trustworthy, and respectful.

We have amazing teachers, amazing staff and Johnston cares about every students growth, not just the select few who test better. The Teachers want each child to succeed educationally, emotionally, and physically. Johnston cares about the WHOLE child. I have never seen such a dedicated group of teachers and staff.

Teacher effectiveness: Very effective
July 07, 2015
My daughter loves her school. Our Teachers are some of the best in our district. They genuinely care for each and every students success. My daughter has excelled her learning and is challenged daily. Johnston has been a blessing for my family, we are all a very family oriented and strive to achieve growth in every child. Johnston values family and has a lot of family events and activities all year round. A lot of families choose to not enroll their child here because of title 1 and the low PI score, but with Title 1 we get substantial educational support to help our students in all areas. We have great student/teacher ratios. Johnston is a great school and I am proud to be part of it!

Over the years, I have seen DD Johnston improve. The teachers really care for their students. They try hard to help them improve. I also like that over the years they've added many special events and activities for the students. My children are happy and content attending DD Johnston!

I have been considering removing my child from this school for almost the entire school year now. Come September he will no longer be there. My son is a 3rd grader and has done well, his teacher does a great job keeping me informed of his progress and even makes an extra effort to personally call me and keep us informed of behavior/school work. The main issue i have is with the office/administration. On more than one occasion after school activities were canceled and parents weren't informed, office staffer sent my child to look for a teacher & ask if there program was still on for the day. I didn t receive a call for over 45 mins. to let me know I needed to be picked up. I was then told the office didnt know what was going on with the after school program & it was my 9yr old responsibility to inform my husband and I about it being canceled for the day. Trying to get in contact with the principal is just as bad, I stopped trying. This use to be a great place for our children, I'm disappointed and I believe we should be a lot tougher on our schools for our children s future.

I'm not happy with the great school rating. My child is an excellent student and in the fourth grade but I am seriously considering changing to a new school with a better rating next year. I understand it's not only the school's responisbility to make our school better, it is also the parents, etc. but it doesn't help that none of the PTA members speak English and I have to listen to assemblies/performances in two languages. Maybe getting everybody to learn English would be one great big start to improvement.

My son is a 3rd grader at Johnston. He is excelling socially and academically. They are doing a wonderful job and I am very happy with his education. My only complaint is that with all the school budget cuts, we stand to lose many of our excellent educators. That is a real shame and I can only see it hurting our students.

My daughter has been attending DD.Johhnston Elementry since First 5 till now 3rd grade. I feel it's a great school and it would be much better if there was more activity as Drama, Art, Sports, performance to encourage kids to be confident . I know parents would support anything to keep there kids in the right track .

This school has a great principal but the office staff needs to leave. My child is afraid of the staff here and because of that we had to move.

Trying to contact teachers is nearly impossible for the working parent other than being allowed to leave messages in the office there is not direct contact with the teachers until conferences are scheduled.

This is my son's first year attending Johnston Elementary school. He is in a pre-K program and it has been a great jumpstart for him. The quality of their programs are excellent with emphasis on the arts (performing and visual). He has surpassed my expectations academically and socially. There are plenty of opportunities for the parents to be involved including monthly parent meetings, where concerns are addressed and currents events are communicated. It is an inviting atmosphere and a great beginning.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
