Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I couldn't be happier or more grateful to have my child at this school! The teachers are so caring and the students are so fulfilled and nurtured. The art and music this school incorporates are some of the things so many other public schools are missing. I love getting to feel like a real part of my child's education and the wonderful staff and other parents make me look forward to each day we get to grow and learn together with our children.

I would agree with the review posted on November of 2011. The school has had some turnover from senior staff and budget seems to be an issue. This school is going in the wrong direction. The teachers are dated in their views about how a child should act. The children in this school do not want to follow up their high school experience at another Waldorf system. Overall very dissapointed with their handling of my childs education and personal growth.

This school, coming from a student, is a good school, teaches good material, but is stuck in the 60's. Any use of cell phones, gaming devices or any other technological thing is forbidden and, if found, confiscated. In the kindergarten kids get in trouble for, and I quote, "TV Talk". Yes, thats right, even the mere MENTION of the word "Spider-man" is punishable. Other than this and the issues with budget (the school seems to be getting poorer and poorer every day) it is a good school. Worries about kids being teased/bullied, begone! The school has a 0 tolerance policy for things like this. The school is a raffle school with a long waiting list, so you might need to wait to get your kid in. One of the teachers (who I will leave unnamed) has an obsession with making kids pick up trash, which is very annoying. Also, the teachers tend to favor girls a LOT more than boys, so be prepared if your child is a boy. Last but not least, it has "main lesson", which is where you learn something, write a draft, draw a final (needs to be neat, have a nice border, etc.) then draw a picture. Very boring, takes a long time. Overall, its a pretty good school.

This school is a little gem in the sea of public school choas out there. It is a magical ride for the parents as well just as much as it is for the children. Reason being is that education is presented in such away that it makes you want to be back at school learning again yourself. The school really fosters a community of diversity and a classical education you just can't find easily these days.

The culture here is of care and kindness. As a new family to the school we could not feel more welcomed and cared for anywhere else. Having experiences with standard public schools, I view the significant difference being the shared interest of all families to be involved, maintain high expectations and the focus on heart, hand and head. These students learn how to be great people, in addition to being great learners.

It is a unique school in Marin. Unlike all the other schools they truly care about the students. They teach them not only academics but to care for each other and the environment and opens up their creative minds. We love this school and wish there were more like it.

I loved going to this school, it shaped me and helped me become the person I am today. It has fabulous teachers and a wonderful curriculum. It involves the arts in school which so many schools today are lacking, and helps children develop and discover who they are and be extremely proud to be that person.

The school teaches to the whole child, emotional, mind, and physically. The school focus on the child's well being awareness of the world as an interactive use of everyday natural occurences and the cultivation of imagination are extrodonary methods that allow a child to grow and understand many things like the relationship of nature and then relate it back to an educational understanding as a whole: emotional, mind, and physical

I am impressed with the curriculum and philosophy of Novato Charter School. I have seen my two nieces thrive under a program that encourages individuality and creative growth as well as academic fundamentals. The school appears to take pride in cultivating a child's natural abilities, strengths and interests. At the same time Novato Charter School teaches its pupils well balanced social interaction while integrating such important qualities as courtesy, respect and discipline. Amazing supportive teachers whom teach the 'whole' child. Curriculum that includes presentation skills, music, art, motion and rythum and fine motor skills by crafting using these theories within the classroom, not a seperate entity. Amazing administrative support which enables the teachers to spend less time on extra things and more time on teaching, what they were chosen to do. I have watched in amazement as my child has grown and developed with such strength that would not have been possible anywhere else...

A rich curriculum which develops a core love of learning and rewards curiosity & creativity. I appreciate the blend of waldorf-methods in a public school environment. Everyone buys in -teachers, administrators, parents & kids -- eliminating and/or limiting kid-focused marketing and media (TV/computer/screen time) creates engaged, creative and curious students and allows them to focus on learning without distraction. When technology is introduced at an age appropriate 5th grade, the students process this information in a mature and intelligent fashion. NCS graduates have performed very well in high school and college. It's safe to say about 15% of the parent body is in the technology and/or creative field and another big percentage in finance and other white collar fields. It's not all hippies and llama farmers.

This school is amazing because its leadership is incredible, and the community within is deeply connected. It is progressive, nurturing, stimulating and captures the Waldorf spirit in the most positive of ways. We know we are in good hands when the school's Director is giving interviews for an author's book on cutting edge education one day, and then plucking lice off my daughter's head and assisting my kindergarten son with his loose tooth on the playground the next. My daughter is thriving at the Novato Charter School. This is rated of the very best waldorf-based charter schools in the US - despite receiving far less funds than are appropriated to our local public schools. They offer an approach consistent with the child's natural learning rythms. It is very well-rounded compared to the typical 'teach to the test approach' in CA public schools. We are very fortunate to be a part of this special school community!

I can't say how wonderful my experience at NCS was . I entered in 6th grade. I was immediately welcomed by my teacher and classmates. Teacher is to simple of a word for what Mrs.Holt was to her class. As for my classmates, we still meet every year. I met my best friends in 6th grade, we all went on to different high schools but I still see them every weekend. As for graduating on to high school, I couldn't have been better prepared. When other students were struggling with writing essays or taking notes, I already knew how. This is my senior year, my friends are all applying to top colleges but I won't be leaving home for an other year seeing as I just started the second year of my AA. NCS is a great choice for any one in search of a great education.

I believe our children's educations have been greatly enhanced by their years at NCS. They have learned to think independently and have thrived academically. NCS is a Waldorf-methods school which has really made an effort to align to state standards, and our children's test scores reflect that. The school offers instruction in handwork (i.e. knitting), painting, recorder, strings, Spanish and gardening to all students at an appropriate grade level which has really given them an experience they would not find in any other public school in the area. Parent involvement is very high and there is active fundraising by the parent body which pays for facility development and specialty classes. Several of the teachers this year are brand new to teaching, which has caused some growing pains but the teachers are well-mentored and have great potential. On the negative side, NCS parents are cliquish and can be very judgemental.
