Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

There are many reasons one takes one's child to a school, key in this list are instruction in reading, writing and elocution. I have to say that I am most impressed by the quality and care taken by San Jose Middle School in the melding of core educational skills and extra-curricular activities to achieve a wholesome high functioning individual who exudes confidence and demonstrates leadership among their peers. Thank you for what this school has helped do for my son, especially the band program and the originality, diversity and 'out-of-the-box' repertoire of math and science projects your educators have. They have helped in fueling many a good and interesting discussion. In terms of what I would consider an area of improvement; if hard-pressed I would like to say that the physical education instructors do a commendable job overall and have an opportunity to improve the variety of sporting and exercise activities available to students. One metric that would be useful, albeit controversial, would be an inclusion of students' Body Mass Indices (BMI) in the report card and indications of what the instructor deems to be each child's opportunity areas of improvement and or development.

This school is wonderful. It has a welcoming feel and great music program. It's certainly not the same school it was 5 years ago.

I am a student at SJMS and do not like the school at all. I am not doing well at math and the teachers never help you.

I am so happy with all of the changes in the last year and 1/2 since the new principal Jeff King arrived. The staff, teachers and the great leadership of Jeff has turned this school around to the way it was a few years ago. I had felt it needed to improve and now it so much better! Thanks, Jan Derby for getting Jeff to our school.

I am pleasantly surprised at how well my children are doing at SJMS. They are in 6th and 8th grade and are really motivated by the teachers to do their best. I can see the improvement in their grades. I transferred my sons to this school after 6 years in a catholic school and I feel that my kids have received more individual attention and support at SJMS then they have ever received anywhere else. The new principal, Jeff King runs this school better than a private school. Everyone feels welcome, encouraged to pitch in and belong to part of a community. Thanks SJMS!!

San Jose has undergone a massive cultural change over the past year and a half. The focus is on college preparedness (yes, it does start before high school) and individual responsibiity and achievement. Parent involvement skyrocketed last year with College Fridays. Last year, every student was given the opportunity to tour UC Berkeley with his or her class to get the sense of what college is about and how they can get there. I believe next year will be the University of San Francisco. This school has a bit of a reputation from previous years. I stil hear untrue rumors about this school. I really encourage you to visit San Jose, talk to the administrators and see for yourself what has changed at this school. Eric Winkler, ewinkler@amsl.com.

I've been so happy with my 2 children's experiences here! This school has a positive energy you can feel, and as a parent I especially love the high expectation for focusing on work and planning to go to college.

I am a student at San Jose. I am currently a 7th grader and I love it here. I have been here for 2 years and had alot of fun. The teachers really care about there students and to what ever it takes to make them learn. They dont put up for the children not turning in there homework and not doing there class work, they always focus on every child and make them learn what they need to know. They have a new proncipal, Jeff King, and he has made some excellent changes. I give this school 5 out of 5 stars! :)

The teachers are always prepared to meet the standards of every child. Awesome programs, such as speech contests, track, cross country, mathletes, and so on. This is my third year at San Jose and I absolutely love it here!

Very disappointed in the way they taught my son who came from China and couldn't speak any English. They need a better system of teaching in this situation. There was one great teacher, Mrs. Krot, who understood his needs and was able to do a wonderful job with him. Mrs. Mendel also did a very good job. The other teachers just didn't get it. The 'uniform' system was a joke. 90% of the children didn't even bother wearing anything close.

THe teachers are amazing. They are always available for the kids for help with work or questions. Open comunication is a way or life at SJMS, teachers are very easy to get in touch with, email or phone. The teachers at SJMS really care about the kids.

This school's administration likes to believe that they are strict disciplinarians, but they are not. They are slow to respond to serious offenses and are ineffective when they finally do respond. The administration gives lip service to parent concerns and communication.

The two principals are absolutely wonderful. I have never seen two people that are more visible than these women. Their tireless energy and focus on education make San Jose a quality school. I am disappointed in the high rate of teacher turnover. My child has had several different teachers throughout the year in two subject areas. I am not exactly sure the reason for this, but I think there could be some improvement with more consistency in the classroom.

SJMS is a very tightly run middle school. Thanks to its principal, Deb Kubin, and a very energized staff, the programs at SJMS are only minimally distracted by the typical adolescent behaviors that is so common at other middle schools, thereby allowing the teachers to spend more time teaching and less time policing. A perfect example is SJMS's 'TEAM' program which groups all the school's kids into multi-grade, teacher-led groups of 20-30 students periodically for team building exercises and group discussions around bullying and cooperation. SJMS is the only school in the NUSD using this program and it has worked wonders to reduce the incidence of bullying and improve the overall atmosphere for the kids. Academically, SJMS is on par with NUSD's two other middle schools and is one of the best schools in the county at working with ELL kids to bring them up to speed and into the main population.
