I have worked at many schools, in the Bay Area and beyond, and while I no longer work for ICS I would happily send my own children here for their K-5 education. There have been some ups and downs in the past 3 years (2004-07) due to an administrator who was 'placed' there regardless of her (mis)alignment with the school vision. The teachers, however, remain strong, the students empathetic to a fault and ready to be pushed to the highest standards, and (thankfully) the new principal is smart, well trained, and possesses a clear school vision and the know-how to see that vision through.
The mission of International Community School (ICS) is to develop our students to become critical thinkers, empathetic and just global citizens, with 21st century skills. Our school community addresses the social inequities in the current educational landscape and we strive to maintain a school culture where our students' potentials will be achieved through building positive relationships and implementing a rigorous academic program. We have two language programs: One is a late-exit bilingual program with a clear goal of students completing fifth grade fully bilingual, and the other is a Sheltered-English model, which is completely in English. Our school welcomes and encourages parent engagement. Parents support their children by volunteering in classrooms, reading at home, and attending workshops. Parents support the school in a wide variety of ways ranging from fundraising, cooking, yard supervision, and help in the office. We firmly believe in a diverse and rich community where everybody is a learner and all are valued.
Our mission is to inspire and support families to champion their children's education - at
school, at home and in their community. We are a national non-profit with offices and programs
in Oakland, Milwaukee, Washington D.C. and Indianapolis.
