The academics are terrible, there is no communication between anyone and the administration is ridiculous. It is sad to see comments from children whose parents listened and removed their children from this school.
My daughter graduated in the first class of 2006 from Oakland School For the Arts. We will be eternally grateful for the opportunities she was given, the education she received and the care she got from the administration and staff. No high school is perfect, and a new one has a straight uphill challenge to establish itself. This school was exceptional for our family. Our seniors were accepted to the full range of colleges from east coast Ivy League to arts academies to universities and community colleges, many receiving scholarships. Our students were seen as interesting, accomplished in their art, capable of interacting with adults effectively, and with goals and aspirations. Believe me when I tell you that this is not the typical case in college admissions! This special school and its students deserve as much support as parents can give. It is not a typical school and it produces greatness.
This school is a total mess. It is organized poorly and the administration is at times unapproachable. The kids suffer.
It is one of the best schools that my children could go to in their lives.
My son has been attending OSA for 2yrs now. He loves the school. He has been disappointed in some of the staffs being let go. There is a lot to work through with how the school is run and have quality teachers that will stay longer than one year. I wanted to take my child out because I am unhappy with the way the school operators but my son does not want to leave. He is getting what he wants out of school. There is no other place where he can learn all the things he needs to to be head of his peer when in college. He is a visual art student and is willing to put up with all the problems in order to accomplish his goal. So we will let him stay because he is deicated to his work and enjoys it.
Oakland School for the Arts may 'seem' like a good school, but really isn't. The Administration does not like to keep the lines of communication open between themselves, the parents, and the staff. OSA likes to give off a strong 'do what I say' type of message to the parents, and students. Instead of working together as a team, parents must fight to learn vital information.
There is a lack of communication between parents and staff. The Director does not have open door policy, nor do the principals. The teachers are not happy.
Teacher and student turnover is extremely high. Our experience has been that the director and the board only want to showcase the 'best of breed' in order to raise funds for the school without regard to the artistic development of all the students.
New school. Big turnover in teachers. I think that the main problem is management some of the people heading the departments.
As a new charter school OSA needs time and true leadership to see how their students will compare to other Oakland Unified District students.
This school is going through growing pains. The quality of the academics is uneven. The teacher turnover continual. On the otherhand, the student community is exceptional.
I attend this school and I can tell you that everyone here has super big egos and everyone thinks they are better than everyone else. THere are no fights but if it were a regular public school, we would have a fight just about a fight every day. This is academically unstable and the administration is unjust. I'm not just saying this because I'm a student. In Literary Arts, we don't even have a teacher and academic wise, I feel like I won't be able to go to college becaus they keep screwing things up. We may have high scores but if you send your child here, I can tell you now that child will not be happy and life shouldn't be about just having good grades. Your child should go to a school where you know they'll be happy. You can even ask the teachers what they think!
Do not attend this school. There are some very good teachers there, but they're like goldfish. If the administration thinks students are getting attached, they won't hesitate to drop them. They rule with an iron fist. If you are considering enrollment, reconsider. It's just not the smart thing to do.
I have been attending Oakland for the Arts for about a week now and I have to say that I really like it. The hours are long and your student has to be devoted to the art they chose, but the school is really unique. The classes are interesting and the other students are friendly. I have yet to run across cliques, drugs, sex, alcohol or any of the other common high school problems. The school is a little unorganized, but the teachers and students are friendly and the arts emphasis can be very demanding--for example, the Literary Arts students have to prepare a newspaper every two weeks.
The academic programs are great, in spite of the fact the school has a high turnover of teachers. The students and teachers seemed devoted to getting a quality education for the students. The school is geared toward all sorts of Arts programs so if your child is very artsy this is the school for you. Sports are not stressed and that is just find for most artsy types. My student does not miss the sports at all, becauses the school has lots of physical activities, such as dance. The school is a very good school
Oakland School For The Arts is a new school, however they strive towards perfection inorder to ensure children exceed expectations in the arts as well as academically. My child has learned and grown in this environment, however there is room for a more robust academic curriculum, which will prepare students for college. Also, students should receive more praise and recognition for their projects and personal accomplishments, especially in the arts. Parental involvement is extreme and caring. With this combination, the school and the students cannot help but to succeed beyond their limitations, making their dreams an eventual reality.
