I have had positive experiences at this school for the last 3 years. I love the cleanliness and comfort of the school campus. Principal Nguyen is a strong, confident leader and her love for her school and students are unquestionable. The teachers are wonderful and the office staff, especially Ms. Rico goes above and beyond to assist parents and students. The special education program has done wonders with my student and they do well to communicate his goals and achievements. If I could add one thing to the school, it would be a PTO so we can raise funds and do more activities to get the parents/guardians more connected.

Academics program is excellent! Extracurricular activities are supplemented through after school program. Parent involvement is low but is getting better. School is growing and experiencing some learning pains but all in all it is going in the right direction. Best school for its area!!

  • At EnCompass Academy, we believe that education "Starts with Self, is Guided by Families, Engaged in Community, and Rooted in Ancestors." We strive to reach the whole child, and as a result, our students thrive through a culturally-responsive, empowering, and caring school culture with deep relationships, personal attention, data-driven and standards-based learning, family/school partnerships, music, visual arts, gardening, fitness, technology, and "looping" with students in the same class for two years as much as possible. Our rigorous, standard-based academics focus on building academic language in speaking and writing across subjects. EnCompass Afterschool Scholars (first through fifth grade) get homework assistance or reading support, enriched by African and Latin dance, computers, fitness, media literacy, and/or gardening. Students use computers frequently to work on programs that target their exact level of need in reading and math. Close alignment of general and special education staff help students in the Resource, Autistic Spectrum, and Special Day Class programs to accelerate learning. Our beautiful campus oasis, built in 2005 with award-winning design and green space, has rolling lawns, native plant-lined pathways, garden beds, an outdoor amphitheater, and a multipurpose auditorium. Our students and families love to use the new state-of-the-art Oakland Public library that is co-located on our campus. A daily student salad bar lunch option, fruit and vegetable snacks three times/week, and the weekly Oakland Fresh Produce Market reinforce student wellness. Partnerships bring graduate student teacher and counseling interns, middle school mentors, and coaches in ELA, Science, and technology to campus to enhance the work of our highly-skilled teachers.
