My son has been successful here--he is a socially normal and athletic guy who struggles with ADD and dyslexia and who would have totally failed in a regular high school--instead he has been successful here with all the extra scaffolding and support offered and his confidence and ability to compensate for his deficits and self advocate has grown so much we are actually looking at four year colleges--something I NEVER imagined doing with him 5 years ago. It was four years of a long commute tho and he lost neighborhood friends in the process--but it was well worth it. And in all honesty, the Berkeley/Oakland kids are more his tribe than the local Walnut Creek kids, so despite the long commute it's been a perfect fit. I spend a lot of time driving thru the tunnel so he can hang out with friends, but it got better as he got older and got the hang of BART. His only complaint has been that there are more Boys than Girls and his local friends have more cute girls to date at the local high school; but he recognizes this is a small complaint compared to the fact he's been able to be successful some hard high school level courses and that he is now ready to face college.
This is a wonderful school that serve a great need here in the bay Area for learning disabled students. The curriculum is challenging, satisfying the need for college requirements. It is small enuoght to evryone can participate in the sports teams and cheerleading. The faculty is first rate. My child is very happy here. Thanks goodness this school exists. No more long nights of doing homework with my child. He does his own homework. He is really fond of the teachers too.
