Futures Elementary arose out of the former Lockwood campus in 2007 due to the desires of parents and teachers to have a smaller, more responsive school. We now have over 300 students in K-5 classes. In our second year of operation, Futures had the highest Academic Performance Index (API) gains in the entire district. We emphasize dialogue, relational trust, and inquiry-based learning. Our students and teachers practice mindfulness in the classroom. As one teacher put it, "We are always asking kids to pay attention, but we never teach them how; mindfulness does that." Students stay with the same teacher for two years (K-1, 2-3, and 4-5) in order to deepen trust and understanding in their relationship. We offer a comprehensive after school program that is closely linked to the classroom.
