Quick tip if you're looking for a small, caring environment for your child, look no further than Kaiser Elementary School. The school has passed the test especially at this time of year when staff members are tired and student are changing into more mature "human beings", I've still found the atmosphere cheerful, friendly and nurturing and that's toward the parents and grandparents. Students are treated to smiles , monthly field trips, regular assemblies and the feelings and attitudes directed toward my grandson are awesome. His teacher is alert, careful and focused on academics but with a smile or hug. She uses humor to make a point so the student wants to learn. Afterschool staff is wonderful and the office is busy but never too busy to notice a very small child or confused adult early in the morning or late in the day Great School! check it out.......

A relatively small school (300) in a safe, beautiful location. Longstanding, cohesive staff with a passion for integrating the arts into the curriculum. A welcoming, diverse community with many active parents supporting the PTA.

While only 2 months into Kindergarten - I'm amazed at the speed in which my daughter is learning. She is thrilled to go to school each morning. We have found the school a wonderful place and couldn't be happier. The parent involvement is very high, and most of the other parents I meet are just as happy as I am to be there.

The only public elementary school in Oakland that reflects the true diversity of the city (all-welcoming), with high expectations and a safe environment. It's not easy for parents to provide transportation to the Hiller Highland location but the payoff is big. The PTA pays for terrific enrichment programs and the school community embraces the non-traditional solution of coming together from outside the neighborhood. My kids love it here and they are doing exceptionally well.

For grades K-3, which is what I've experienced so far, the teachers are fantastic. This is an arts-based school, and the children learn by doing. They make art projects, keep journals, draw, listen to music - everything that enhances learning on all levels. The parent involvement is phenomenal. Although the class sizes average 27, there are parents volunteering in the classroom every day, so the ratio of kids to adults is more like 1:13 or less. Time is given to kids who need extra help. There's before- and after-school programs as well as enrichment programs for the kids. The environment is beautiful, in the Oakland hills. Giving 4 stars only because OUSD is requiring this great little school to add more classes and students.

This is a school that cares about each student. There are not kids left on their own to struggle with the challenges of school. The parents are very involved and the teachers are very dedicated.

I have 3 children currently at Kaiser. Our children are thriving, happy and learning. I can't say enough about the caring and loving teachers who put our children first. We have had a wonderful experiences with all of the teachers, the culture, leadership and other families the past 6 years and are looking forward to the next 4 years. I can't recommend Kaiser enough!

The diverse school community, committed teachers and beautiful location make this school so highly rated. The diversity of our school reflects our city and we have wonderful teachers. The principal is approachable, grounded, and greatly committed to the well-being of his staff and his students. We have the best parent community who comes together to support our children and our wonderful teachers. My children feel safe and learn at Kaiser

My son started Kindergarten this year and I cannot be happier with our decision to send him to Kaiser. This school is a hidden gem in so many ways. First, there are only (2) classes per grade, which contributes to our tight-knit community and parent engagement. Second, it is one of the only schools that truly represents ALL of the Oakland community from a diversity standpoint. Lastly, the class sizes are generally low for Oakland Public Schools (<20 student/teacher in K) which lead to more effective teaching and learning. I would highly recommend Kaiser to other parents!

This school is a fine example of administration, teachers and parents working together for the benefit of the students. My son's education is enhanced and richer because of the healthy environment in which he attends school. All families are motivated toward making the quality of the education experience the best possible.

For the past 3 years I have driven my daughter past a nearby private school on our way to Kaiser. I feel so lucky to have such great academics, parent involvement, afterschool activites and extended care without the private school tuition. Hint to OUSD: a nice area of turf in the play yard would make it perfect!

My son just started Kindergarten and is loving it. This school has excellent Kindergarten teachers who work with each other to make this a really good experience for our kids. They really have things organized well. My son loves his reading buddy time with the 3rd graders! I think the parent community is great as well. I've heard second-hand that the upper grades could be strengthened a bit, but I am confident in the leadership of this school. It is great to find the combination of diversity and academic strength in this school and I really believe it is only getting better!

The best part of this school is not the amazing teachers, or the coolest an mos amazing principal, or the parent involvement, or the amazing after school care team, the best part is the moment you walk in to this school you become part of a family!!!!

This is a gem of a school. I have one older child who graduated from Kaiser and another who is currently enrolled. I am continuously impressed by the dedication of the teachers, administration and parents. Kaiser serves a widely diverse population and this is one of the best things about the school. Not only do teachers strive to push kids academically, they are also teaching them how to be good citizens. This was an art magnet school in the past and art is integrated into the school as well, which is amazing. Kaiser is also one of the few schools that has instrument instruction for all 4th and 5th graders. It really is an amazing school and and amazing community! If you have looked at Kaiser yet, definitely do!

My son transferred to Kaiser. we were really nervous about his transition after spending k, 1 and 2 in a small independent school in the suburbs. We chose the school for it's diversity, high test scores and community. It has been a great choice for us. We really appreciate the parent support. My son is having a great year and is making great strides academically and socially. He has loads of friends and loves going to school every day. On the weekends, he misses school! I give it only 4 stars because the organization could be better. There is often misinformation about meeting times, the length of the school day (half days for the first three days of school), etc. I still haven't received any info on the school lunch. That said, we are very happy with our choice.

My daughter just started school here this year. She is in the second grade. We were worried it would be hard for her to adjust. The kids (especially the older ones) were so nice and respectful. We met a 4th and 5th grader who said they were sad they had such a short time left because they love Kaiser. Her teacher is innovative and using project-based learning and arts integration. This school believes in differentiated learning. Best of all for me is that the kids are kind and respectful. AND all this in a diverse environment where the achievement gap is being closed. This is truly a school that represents Oakland. A California Blue Ribbon School. There are a lot of choices in Oakland, Kaiser is solid.

Kaiser Elementary School has been a wonderful experience for our son and our family. It is a welcoming enviroment for all kinds of families. Having toured many of the public schools in Oakland, Kaiser was the only school with high API, a diverse student body, located in a stunning location that welcomed our familiy with warmth and positive feedback. We were greeted with wonderful supportive teachers, parents and staff. The social and emotional enviroment grounded in the Roots of Empathy/Second Step Program spearheaded by our principle, gives the teachers and the students the room to solve problems. The academic success team in place for our son with five staff members helping us to make success part of the curriculum, the art teacher, music teacher, computer and PE teacher are great as well. We have engaged in after school enrichment programs and have friends from every district in the city of Oakland. It's Kaiser's 50th Anniversary of being a landmark educational institution and we will continue to celebrate as we work towards keeping it a thriving school for all of our students.

Well, I am admittedly posting to address the comment posted on 12/24. I am the parent of two Kaiser kids (one graduate). The principal that came after Katie McClain was a teacher for 15+ years prior. He stayed as principal for about 8 years. Ms. McClain still regularly volunteers her time. Kaiser's a family school with many different types of families, including the staff. It boasts some of the most longevity in terms of staff of any school I've seen. Mr. Avent is only in his second year and he HAS implemented changes, notably in the higher grades. I had one of the 2nd grade teachers still on staff. Her style was not mine. My children thrived academically and developed a love of reading and writing they still have today. There is attrition across the district in 4th and 5th grade. Dissatisfaction? Perhaps. The parents fought hard to keep a nontenured 4/5th grade teacher that was placed on the economic chopping block 2X, so apparently many parents are happy. I had the other two. They were very academically challenging (perhaps that is the source of the complaint?)If anything my older was bored the first year Middle School. They are now in advanced classes.

Remember that you are shopping for a school from K - 5. Kaiser is a warm campus with wonderful and involved families . In it's heyday under principle McClain, it was a great school. Today, it struggles. Two new K teachers this year. 1st and 3rd grade have absolutely AMAZING teachers. They care, work hard, and it comes through. There are very mixed feelings among parents about the current second grade. The numbers of students drop drastically in the 4th and 5th grades. The teachers, two of whom hold Oakland Education Association (AKA The Teacher's Union) offices, will attribute this to attrition, but many parents tell a different story. Some Kaiser parents refer to 4th and 5th as the lost years. The good about the Teacher's Union strength is how it helped to fend off school closure. Flip side is that it quickly becomes apparent that little teaching actually goes on in the 4th and 5th grades. The current principle (second principle since Ms. McClain retired) has some very good ideas, thoughtful about students, but has been unable to effect changes that need to be made. Best place to get the scoop - after school on the playground.

My son started Kindergarten here this year, and her loves it! The school is academically strong, diverse, and has a fantastic parent/family community. Our teacher is smart and witty, and she identifies the individual academic and social needs of each student. The children are thriving in her class. The Principal is a dynamic advocate for the school, the kids, and the teachers,

Kaiser feels like a private school, in terms of size, quality, and community. But not in a oh-so-snobby kind of way either. We truly have diversity in every sense of the word here: racial, socio-economic, and more! My shy and creative son has been thriving at Kaiser, and even if I had the money to send him to private schools, I would not, because of the amazing teachers, dedicated parents, friendly kids--in short, the community here is phenomenal! The principal is truly caring and a gem in a school that sparkles with heart.

We are in our 4th year at Kaiser with our daughter. She has taken off socially, artistically but most of all- academically: she is reading and writing far beyond her grade level as her 2nd grade teacher just works magic in this area with project based instruction. Last year the school went through some upheaval, but I have to say that the staff and community did such a bang up job providing a positive learning environment, we have become closer and stronger. Our son begins Kindergarten next year and will be right at home. Being a small school, the staff already knows his name and his personality as well as his parents and grandparents. The collaboration of the staff and our extremely dedicated principal provides a focused curriculum tailored to the student's individual needs (no small feat- they work very hard at this) that they know very well, much like a private school. Others have spoken to the diversity, but really one must see it in person to appreciate it. This is Oakland at it's best!

The principal, teachers and support staff are second to none at Kaiser. It truly is a community school where families are very close knit and work together. Mr. Avent (our principal) and our amazing staff have been the back bone of Kaiser's success. My son is in 3rd grade and has been at Kaiser since kindergarten. My son's excitement and eagerness to get to school eveyday, let's me know we made the right decision to send him to this great Oakland school, that truly is a hidden gem. We appealed 6 times to attend this school and it was worth it. If you're looking for a school with a great afterschool program, this is it! The Adventure Time staff is dedicated to supporting families and they genuinely care about our children. This school is home to some very diverse families and it's one of the things that makes this school so unique. The PTA is very active and strives very hard to provide the school with the best programs & support systems. Kaiser truly is a GREAT school - second to none!

This is our second year at Kaiser Elementary and we absolutely love it! The teachers, principle, and parents are what make this school a shining gem. I've never seen such a dedicated and passionate group of individuals committed to children. The parents and children of Kaiser Elementary represent the rich diversity of Oakland, we are a truly diverse community. We are an Arts anchor school and it shows; I love walking through the halls and seeing/hearing the vibrant artwork our children. We truly would not choose to be elsewhere.

My daughter attended Berkeley schools (where we were happy) and when we moved to Oakland we made a tough decision to find a new school. Through the options process (our neighborhood school has very poor test scores) we were able to get her into Henry J Kaiser Elementary. Everything about the experience speaks to the needs and expectations of our family. High academic achievement, a diverse collection of families and students, an engaged PTA, a terrific staff and faculty, an arts magnet program. I want to single out one staff member - Amy Haruyama taught my daughter 1st grade and she is a shining example of what public schools can offer our kids. My daughter had a TREMENDOUS year in Ms. Haruyama's class - thrilled to go to school, challenged to reach her potential and happy at the end of each day. The staff at the after school program are also a terrific group. AdventureTime is great and now both of my kids are enrolled and having fun every afternoon. They help with homework, provide fun activities and the staff is just a great group of people. Check out Kaiser - the OUSD was thinking about closing the school but they backed off when the parents got VERY involved. 5 stars!!

Kaiser is a school with a strong community from the parents to the staff to a lot of folks from all over Oakland that support this unique school. There's been some upheaval and worry all over Oakland, but Kaiser has weathered the storm and is moving forward with great plans for it's future. We are excited for the opportunity the storm has brought us! The teaching quality is unsurpassed! We spent k-1st with our first child in private and finally pulled her out because she was bored and only liked to go to school because of the great yard, garden and art. At Kaiser, both our children have a great yard, garden, art and they come home immediately going over what they learned in class. All the teachers through the years have been exceptional. Yes, it's a public school and it has its budget woes. But you will not find a stronger, more diverse and accepting, committed group of parents and educators anywhere else.

We have been so pleased with Kaiser Elementary School. Both of our children, 4th and 3rd graders, have attended the school since kindergarten. Not only have they been exposed to excellent teaching and innovative curriculum, they have fostered a wonderful community of peers. Our children are engaged and inspired at Kaiser. As two highly creative individuals, they have been encouraged to pursue their artistic drives through the incredible arts curriculum. As a family we have formed wonderful life-long friendships with folks in the community. We are a multiracial family and have also appreciated the incredible diversity of the adults, students and families at Kaiser. This is truly a gem in the landscape of Oakland public schools!

Kaiser is a really wonderful school with an excellent academic (but still nurturing) environment. The poster below who says that the vibe is different without Katie McLane is right in a sense. Mel Stenger is not as warm and welcoming as Ms. McLane was. That said, the children do love and respect him. He acknowledges their strengths, helps to work on their weaknesses and sends a strong message of both school and personal pride and confidence to the children and staff. The school has a strong and committed PTA; great arts and music programs; strong anti-bullying campaigns; a beautiful and educational gardening program; it welcomes diverse families; and is overall an exceptional public school. It's hard to live through change and, while Mr. Stenger is not Ms. McLane, he's keeping the school on it's path of excellence.

Kaiser's family atmosphere has changed every since McLane has left. It used to be a sense of togetherness and community within the school. Mel Stengar has not been able to fill her shoes and many of the parents don't feel he will ever accomplish what she has. Kaiser elementary has fallen from it's grace and that is very unfortunate for all of us. Many of the teachers that have made Kaiser what it is today have all gone especially teachers like Mr. Rust and Ms. Reese. The school seems very political and not about well-being of the school. Change in leadership has hurt the sense of good feeling within the school.

Kaiser Elementary School is a gem. The principal, staff, and faculty are committed to making all children welcome and work hard to meet individual needs. Our family is thrilled to be a part of such a dynamic and special school.

Academics at this school are top notch overall - just check out the teachers and listen to what parents say about them. Music/art and humanities were the focus of this formerly magnet school and the new principal holds these values as he has been teaching there for many years as well. Parent involvement is wonderful but seems to be the same group and more attention to including lower economic families is important. Participation is coming along and stays important to continue since the fantastic opportunities without funds is not possible. Your child is in a safe nurturin environment here. We love this school!

We are happy overall with our children's experience at Kaiser. The direction the principal takes the school is what sets it apart. She is dedicated to the arts and arts funding. Many parents spend a lot of time in the classrooms as well as with fundraising.

If your child is lucky, they will attend this gem of a school where they will be nurtured in Kindergarten by an excellent and brilliant teacher who has taught some of the best and the brighest through eighth grade and they will have the privelege of having perhaps the best educational experience in an Oakland Public School in 5th grade with a teacher who has private school experience teaching AP classes. They may be lucky enough too, to get a class with the second grade teacher who provides a structured environment and a sense of humor that can't be beat. This will all happen within a community that celebrates diversity and provides music, art, dance....yes, it is a public school...try to get there before the Principal retires!!

Kaiser School is one of the few public schools that still emphasize creativity and the arts. Primary students are given weekly Orff music lessons and upper graders receive music instruction. Visual art is integrated throughout the grades. Thanks to a generous PTA, there is a full time art teacher.

The staff seems to really work together for the benefit of all the kids. No children are allowed to fall through the cracks. Emotional and academic support abound!

Because families come from all over Oakland (and beyond)to attend Kaiser, we have a very special community of people who have chosen to be at the school. It is, indeed a public school of choice! It combines the best of both worlds and the parents really care about the school.

Kaiser was recommended to us because of the diversity of family structures (foster, adoptive, gay and lesbian, single parent, grandparent) where absolutely everyone feels safe and supported.

About this school

Kaiser Elementary School provides a stimulating and creative learning environment where all students feel respected, valued, safe, and supported. We celebrate and nurture children from all of Oakland's neighborhoods, socio-economic levels, and cultural backgrounds. We welcome children from diverse family structures including gay/lesbian parents, single parent, and mixed-race households. We seek to impart the necessary skills for student excellence, and to produce well-rounded, reflective, and socially aware individuals. Our staff of lifelong learners works closely with our families and students to provide an exciting learning environment where we all work to meet our goals to 1) Provide a place where the "family spirit" prevails; 2) Promote academic excellence and encourage diversity; 3) Provide teaching that is holistic, interactive and facilitative; and 4) Provide and maintain an aesthetically-pleasing environment. The staff has an average of thirteen years of teaching experience. As part of being a professional learning community, our teachers meet weekly to collaborate about essential learning, assessments, and intervention. Our school uses all District-approved texts and curricula and meets the needs of those above and below grade level through differentiation techniques in the classroom. We enrich the base program through library, computer, P.E., music, and art classes. Every fourth and fifth grader studies a musical instrument. Parents enrich and support our instructional program through the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) membership and committee work. Our parents also provide support in the areas of classroom volunteer and clerical support, tutoring, office support, event and field trip chaperoning.
