We are grandparents of a 4th grader and a 2nd grader and have been involved as volunteers for 4+ years. The parent involvement at this School is tremendous. The Teachers are superb. The children represent all nationalities, races and economic strata and get along wonderfully in no small part due to parents and Teachers. If all OUSD Schools were like Sequoia, Oakland would have the best Elementary Schools in the State.
While some schools are test-focused, Sequoia's very professional teachers and principal keep the best interests of children in mind. Both of my kids have learned and grown as students and human beings each and every year. They come home talking about how much they like their teachers and they are usually pretty excited about what is going on in class. The teachers are very approachable, caring, and willing to work with parents to customize learning for each child. We also love our awesome community events...the Variety Show is a lovely, supportive place for kids to show off their talents and the Harvest Festival is nonstop fun. The MLK Oratorical Fest is hard to get through without getting teary because the performances are so heartfelt and beautiful. Many of our visitors and chaperones on field trips comment on how nice and polite Sequoia children are, and that has been my experience as well. It's just a down-to-earth community of good people. Finally, I think it is telling that several families have returned to Sequoia after giving charter schools a try. Sequoia is truly special...not flashy or fancy, but a great place for kids.
Sequoia is a wonderful school. My 16, 15 & 12 year old all attended Sequoia and my four year old will attend next fall. After all my years involved with Sequoia I have seen a lot of change, but good change. It went from a good school to a great school. The teachers and the principal really care and work hard. It has a very diverse community which served my multicultural family well. The parent and community support is amazing. It is a wonderful school community to be apart of.
Sequoia is a tremendously vibrant, creative, and nurturing environment for my child. When my son entered Sequoia as a kindergartener, it was a good school, but to be fair it still had plenty of room to grow. He's in 3rd grade right now and I can truly say it has become a GREAT school. We have an exceptionally involved parent community, a fantastic principal and really committed teachers. Every year the school just keeps getting better and better. I love how diverse the community is, and Sequoia kids are among the more respectful and kind children I know. From our annual Harvest Festival, to the Art Spark student art show, and even Kid Movie Nights, I love seeing the Sequoia community in action. You won't be disappointed with this dynamic school!
Sequoia has the increasingly rare combination of experienced, committed, and compassionate teachers, a truly diverse, highly involved and caring community, and a smart principal with a strong vision for the school. There's also a robust enrichment program consisting of African drumming, art, garden, earth science, and choir, as well as afterschool classes ranging from yoga to Legos to Spanish. Definitely worth checking out this amazing school!
Our family is in the fourth year of attending Sequoia. Each year it keeps getting better. Teachers are hard working, skilled and very caring. Our new principal has a great vision for our school. I love walking down the halls and seeing busy, engaged and happy students in each classroom I pass. The community is diverse, positive and not afraid of jumping right in to make our childrens' experience even better. Sequoia is well worth looking at if you want your child to have a great public school experience in a school that looks and feels a lot like what is right with Oakland.
Reasons why we love Sequoia: Loving, nurturing and competent teaching staff! Incredible community of involved parents! Two dedicated art teachers that foster a environment of creativity and self-expression.
I love this school. The principal, teachers, families, and students are by and large not just okay, but wonderful. Sequoia is child-centered, down-to-earth, and low-key; it's proof to me that simple is really good for kids. Children here learn and play. A lot. My kid is friends with all kinds of kids he'd never encounter at other more highly-ranked schools; it is truly diverse in all ways. Teachers here are experienced pros...walking the halls during class time I am always amazed at how attentive and engaged kids are in every room. The community events are fun, old-fashioned, and friendly. It's not a perfect school, but it is pretty close to perfect for my equity-minded, community-oriented family. I'm extremely proud to be part of such a wonderful public school in Oakland.
My son loves his school and as a teacher myself, I think it is an amazing place. It has a wonderful staff and a great community. Thank you for everything you do!
Sequoia has excellent faculty, caring, involved parents and a bright, diverse student body and deep traditions in parents groups. It feels like home.
Sequoia has great teachers, a great after school program (Healthy Start) and the parents are involved. It's a happy, safe, effective learning environment. I have a fourth grader and we've been at Sequoia since kindergarten. Couldn't be happier with our experience!
Sequoia is a wonderful public school built on these principals: diversity is strength, great teachers make great schools, enrichment programs improve student achievement, and dynamic parent involvement can take a school from good to great.
I love Sequoia (my nieces' elementary school) because of their creative teachers, gorgeous gardens, beautiful murals, and the general ambience of happiness and learning.
Sequoia is not just a place with terrific kids and families of every stripe, but a place where teachers and staff really love teaching and being with each other.
This is an amazing school with fantastic community involvement. Since our daughter started 2 years ago we've put in several large gardens within the playground and this year a block long beautiful native garden along Scenic Ave., all by community volunteers, both parents and others in the neighborhood! The teachers are great, the kids are learning loads, and nature is all around them. A model 'public' Oakland school if I ever saw one!
Sequoia has experienced teachers; dedicated staff; the most diverse community of children in Oakland; enrichment programs, including art, garden, music, choir, African Drumming, Library and P. E.; active parent volunteering and fundraising; after school programs; a full inclusion program; and a GATE program for gifted students.
Sequoia is a perfect package. It's a small school with a really down-to-earth parent community, all the while being a diverse and enriching place. While it endures the challenges of all Oakland public schools, it has an increasingly involved group of parent volunteers. The teachers are exceptional, caring people. I am a teacher in a high performing school in Alameda. I choose to send my child to Sequoia because it is a less stressful and competitive environment. And it's 4 blocks from my house. I have enjoyed walking my child to school and running into other neighbors who are doing the same. While test scores really mean little, the scores at Sequoia are on a steady climb. Truely a well kept secret!
Our daughter attends Sequoia and it has been a wonderful experience for her. We love the teachers and the involvement of the other families. The principle is terrific too. Having choir available to the students is a plus...our kindergartener enjoys being involved with the singing group. Sequoia has a sweet and nuturing learning environment and our daughter loves it.
My child's teacher is involved, responsive and totally engaged. My child loves the field trips, the art and music. The student population is diverse, respectful, and very happy. Love of learning is evident. I wish drop-off and pick-up were easier - the streets are too narrow and parking is impossible - but no other complaints.
I love Sequoia. It's family oriented, fun, caring teachers, and overall the children are happy.
