When I think of Miramonte, I think of green lawns, a sprawling campus of warm-toned buildings, great teachers, and incredible homogeneity. My parents moved from Oakland to Orinda so that my brother and I could go to Miramonte - like trading higher property taxes for the price of private school. The academics are, for the most part, great: AP scores and standardized tests show this clearly. Sports teams are successful but they don't have to dominate the student life. Orinda is home to a lot of wealthy families, so I feel that there is a 'rich kid' attitude problem at times, but kids are definitely focused on college and the future, and therefore tend to get things done. In other words, discipline isn't a big problem. The typical Miramonte class is engaging and interesting. It doesn't seem to matter whether the teachers are young or old, veteran or new; students can tell that they really care about education. The teachers are what really make this school a good one; their devotion and willingness to talk to students and go above and beyond what is usually demanded of a public school teacher is rare indeed. Take a look at the graduation rate and the caliber of colleges and universities that Miramonte grads attend, and you'll see that Miramonte is a lot more successful at prepping students for higher education than a lot of private schools in the area. The predominantly caucasian student body is monotonous, and to me, of the very few problems with Miramonte, was one of the biggest. The other was one that might be resolved by now, but now that I'm out of touch with California legislature, I don't know, and that is the problem of funding. A lot of the younger and newer teachers were fearing for their jobs when I was a junior and senior in high school - however, a strong show of support from students and parents helped with this situation.
I have mixed feelings about Miramonte. It s an excellent school for promoting accelerated learning and analytical skills necessary for college. Students graduating from Miramonte are far ahead when they get to UC. Unfortunately, I find the administration in the school to be completely rude and treat the students like they are in boot-camp. The school is made up of great kids so I don't understand the abrasiveness and mistrust. Not to mention, if you are a parent needing front-office assistance they re practically unapproachable. This school is lacking in fun that high-schoolers need! At the Miramonte graduation in 1990 graduates were blowing bubbles, throwing beach balls into the crowd and having fun. They deserved it! Last year atgraduation teachers/administrators treated these adults/grads like they were 5-years old. They took the bubble/balls and demanded silence. An enjoyable HS experience is critical for my kids, thus we're moving to San Ramon to avoid Miramonte again.
It's sports programs are one of the best in the area. It's teachers are some of the best educated in the area.
This school is one of the best academically. It offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, is safe, and highly regarded. I believe it can be difficult for some children as it is extremely competitive and most difficult if you are not a very good student. Its almost like a college prep school in my opinion.
I'd say it is a safe, fun, helpful, accademic enviornment. Although very competitive, teachers and staff are there to always help.
Excellent college prep school. Many after school activities and abundant parent support. Great child-friendly community.
We moved to Orinda from Ann Arbor, Michigan for the schools and have not been disappointed. Miramonte provides an amazingly safe, heathy environment, with good kids, who will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Great school -- prepared my children well for college -- a daughter who graduated with honors, and later a Masters degree from Vanderbilt; twin sons who graduated with honors from Cornell and UVA, and were later accepted to Harvard Law School and Vanderbilt Medical School.
