INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

I'm not here to rate the school but to offer advice to the student who feels she is not going to be able to attend a unversity. Don't panic about this, you're in the 10th grade and you still have time to catch up. Unfortunately, there will always be teachers who make hasty d cisions simply because you lost concentration. You'll find that there are alot of people like that as you go through life. If your grades are low, you can always take summer classes where you may make them up, perhaps with a teacher who is more caring and concerned. Don't start to panic now, just do your best and find other solutions. Good luck!

I currently go to this school and I am in the 10th grade.some of them have helped me understand things I haven't been able to learn before from previous teachers. When I started school last year, about a month into school, I was supposed to be out into Algebra 1, the math class I was put into in the school before palisades, but when I got in they put me in "algebra readiness" which is pre-algebra, I was really mad at this and went to talk to my counselor about it, all she said was I either didn't show up for the placement test or I scored low on the placement test, but I did neither, I have never taken a placement test at Pali and neither was I asked to take one. I'm afraid I won't be able to graduate. his year my teacher had brought down my academic grade (A,B,C,ect.) because I fell asleep in class for a few minutes while she showed us a sample video of a project we will be doing soon. I don't know what to do anymore, I love this school but only the good parts, the rest I just wanna switch to another school who won't mess up my classes and change my grade because of their personal opinion on me.

I feel the need to respond to the many posts slamming Pali Math teachers. For starters, MATH IS HARD! Not everyone (possibly even your little genius) is going to be great at higher levels of math. My children (two at Pali) had those teachers everyone warned about. Low and behold, my child experienced that first B in his sophomore year-Oh NO! One of those kids that has to work for every good grade so it was disappointing - he got over it! It would have been easy to blame the teacher, but the truth was, it was just hard. Note to parents: if I just use his small group of friends(from all over LA and diverse ethnically and socioeconomically) as an example - It doesn t appear a B or C ruins lives as they all received early acceptances to some of the top private universities in the country. For those that want to use Pali s scores to support their argument that the Math department is horrible, please look again at those scores and be sure to compare them to other public school choices. Pali isn t perfect but neither are our children. Stop trying to save them from every disappointment-teach them own up and fight through it. Your children just might surprise you.

Sending my child to Pali was a huge mistake. It is a beautiful campus, clean, safe and orderly but the academic program is very weak. The Pali Math Dept is notoriously horrible. Over 3 years the pattern is the same:6 teachers per semester - 2 good, 2 bad, 2 just checking the days off the calendar till retirement. My daughter's academic experience has been one of steady decline and the teachers there seem very indifferent to parents and students. I have NEVER received a call from a teacher there, so if you don't closely monitor your child's progress and success - believe me, no one else will! The Principal, Dr Magee, seems oblivious or unconcerned about the lack of academic vigor, and mostly just spurts happy talk about the future.

I've never been on the campus nor have I ever met the staff. I am going into the 6th grade; A charter school. My sister went to a different High that she Highly reccemonds, but after seeing videos, reading reviews, and seeing the diversity in this school, I think three years from now palisades will be my choice. I live by car, 2 hours away. But I am very willing to Take, nonetheless but a metro bus just to go to this school! The only thing I'm sorta iffy on is no uniform, because I have worn uniforn since Kindergarten,So i don't have that many like... "Regular" Clothes. But t-shirt and sweats here I come :p! Anyways, I never thought I'd say this but, I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL HIGH SCHOOL!

I was considering switching my son from Pali to New West this year. I was thinking a smaller school might be better for him. He has enjoyed the Pali social life a bit too much, and his grades have suffered. However, the principal at New West was the rudest I have ever met. I would NEVER put him in that school now. This experience made me appreciate Pali more, and what it has to offer. I love that Pali has a beautiful campus, many sports teams and a real school spirit. It is a true high school experience. Dr. Magee was beyond kind when I first met with her regarding my son's attendance at Pali. She is warm and welcoming and doing a great job. I am more grateful my son is attending Pali after that experience.

I have had 2 kids at Pali and currently. There are certainly many positives such as the local and school safety, amazing college ctr., excellent sports program, and involved parents. Teh teacjers ar every hit and miss. The AP and Honors teachers are generally excellent, but the regular classes are sadly inferior. If your child ONLY tales HOnors and Ap, they will be ok and probably achive great things college wise. If they have some regular classes inmath and science in particulr, they will be ill prepared by their teachers and many unmotivated students in those classes. For a public school, it is above average.

I have two boys one who graduated Pali and the other in college now. Generally the school is excellent in many areas. I agree that the math department is very weak with poor teachers. Both my sons are science oriented so a weak math department makes everything else difficult. They really need to work on getting better or more motivated math teachers,

Pali has many wonderful teachers and a great student body where tolerance and inclusion thrive, positives that should carry a lot of weight. The biggest weakness at Pali is the math department, their test scores speak volumes and illustrate the severity of the problem. The math program emphasizes group learning which could work in theory but is not properly implemented and supported by the teachers. Every (and I mean EVERY) student that I know has a math tutor because they don't get adequate instruction or support from the teachers. Even with tutors, the students still struggle because the tests can be confusing with two different methods being taught to them. In 11th grade my son scored "advanced" in every area of standardized tests but was barely "basic" in math. One day, Pali will have to address these issues and stop sweeping the parent's concerns under the carpet.

I am so pleased with this school. It's my son's first year and his teachers are excellent!!! Great opportunities and diversity at this school! I love that I have access to all his assignments and grades through the teacher's web. I even get phone calls letting me know my son has a quiz to study for. The parent liason always keeps you informed of school meetings, events, etc.

Palisades Charter High is one of the BEST public High Schools in California, maybe even in the nation. # 1, it is a beautiful campus - there is green everywhere, Its very open, you can see the mountains, and the ocean. # 2, we have many great faculty, staff, and students. # 3 we have many diligent and very intelligent students creating a great environment. This school is like no other. I am very happy I attend PALI...I love it, its wonderful!

Pali treats students in regular classes like trash. Since when are average students considered deficient? Other students think of them the same way. Math dept. is still appallingly bad; some teachers verbally insult the students, with admin's knowledge. Read all the negative review of math dept on this site, going back years. Socially it stinks. Overcrowded with bused in students.

I have been reading all the reviews and comments about this school. I know that no school is perfect and there is always room for improvement. The challenges Pali faces can only be solved by parent involvement and positive energy. While the teachers might be protected by the district, we as parents can yield a strong voice if we choose to do so. My suggestion for the parents who are disgruntled with the administration or the teachers or any other facet of the school is to become part of the solution. Get involved with a committee or attend board meetings, make your voice heard and offer solutions to what you consider problematic. I encourage you to do something other than complain.

I would rate Palisades Charter High School 5 star in comparison to other Public schools. Pali met or exceeded all of our expectations. The environment is A+ and my daughter took advantage of the AP and honor classes extensively. Like all Public High schools, the classes(Except for AP) were too large, some administrators were better than others. The same could be said for the teachers, although generally I would say we lucked out. The math department defintely needs improvement. On the other hand, Kudos to the Drama Department. the Athletic Department, the Band, ando the Academic Decathlon Team. If you son or daughter is already a good student, then there is no reason not to consider Pali as an alternative to Private School.

Pali High has been a huge disappointment. While there are plenty of bright, highly motivated kids, the school has been plagued by a long series of weak, undermotivated, and ineffectual administrators saddled with an alarming number of terrible teachers who are fiercely protected by UTLA. It's status as an independent charter school does not seem to benefit the students in any discernable way.

Pali administrators feel that they have good teachers to prove they don't need any honors courses. Most of the teachers are horrible and should not be there. The math dept is awful and I've addressed some of the issues with the head of the dept, but nothing had changed. Honors courses are far and too few, especially since most of the incoming students are coming from honors and gifted programs that have prepared them for any challenge. If you decide to send your child to this school, stay close to your childs education, become a voice in what needs addressing, join the PTA or just get involved.

Palisades is an excellent high school. It offers a wide range of choices for students who excell academically and provides support and assistance for those who do not. There have been recent changes that will make the school even better: a strong Executive Director, a new and experienced Principal, and a Director of Instruction to focus on the quality of instruction in the classroom. The athletics program is broad, with many outstanding coaches and the drama program is highly regarded. Now they only need to offer a great instrumental music program (to match the growing choral classes) and make the school more user friendly.

Pali has some great teachers. It also has some terrible teachers. There is a lack of leadership so the terrible teachers have the freedom to do whatever they want. The top 10% of kids do very well. The next group down do not do so well as the classes are over crowded. These kids need some help but they can nver get any. The school needs to do an audit of the Math Department and inform the parents of the failure rate of each teacher. If you send your child to this school, keep very close watch on what is going on in each class.

I have to say that I had high expectations of Pali upon my son entering here in 2006. I am proud to say that Pali has lived up to my expectations across the board. My son even noticed how 'Happy' the teachers were and in his words, 'They love their jobs as teachers and are happy to help in any way they can!' My son has thrived socially and academically at this school. I am pleased with the teachers, administrators, and staff. The extracurricular activities are excellent and parent involvement is as well as can be expected. They hold parents accountable for their child's actions which makes parents stay involved. An excellent environment for thriving on all levels including life skills. I highly recommend this school.

Overall, Palisades is a wonderful campus and great learning environment, but not without its share of hindrances. The courses are very rigorous but not overly stressful, and a wide variety of A.P.'s are offered. A recent move by a few assistant principles to cut down on honors classes offered, however, has begun to create a negative attitude towards those who work hard in school, though such a movement has been met with stiff resistance. The incredible number of high-performance sports programs more than makes up. The campus is safe and fun, with plenty of opportunities to join clubs, and a great peer-tutoring program. This school is a great place to learn and prepare for college and later life.

Pali classes can have excellent quality. They have a very active drama department as well as music (marching band, orchestra, jazz band) and sports of course. But, it is a large school (about 3,000 kids), and a large variation between ninth graders and rest of school. If your child is social and active, this is a great school If your child has trouble speaking up for him/herself, this school may be difficult. There is an excellent school psycologist available, and the administration is responsive and helpful when problems arise. Grade counselors are also involved and come to know all their students. College counseling could be better.

The past school year was great, however I would prefer more honors courses and a stronger curiculum. Some of the classes were a breeze for my daughter. Although Pali gives ninth graders a chance to adjust, I believe they should allow students coming in with a strong background to take honors courses instead of waiting until the tenth grade. The only problem I have with Pali is with the counseling office and the fact that the school is overcrowded. Their academic programs are great, and so are the extracurricular activities. I'm not sure what the overall parent involvement is at every level, but for my level it was high.

Pali is alot of fun. The activities are fun and there is music at lunch and its nice to just be able to relax. Some of the teachers dont really care but if you stick to doing your own thing its fine. Its not easy but not hard. If you join clubs it makes it alot better. There is a little fighting but its a very safe and disaplined campus.

Having sent three children to Pali in the late 80's, I lament the difference in flexibility I see now with two grandchildren attending. I was able to offer my own children program enrichment by tying educational vacation trips into their Pali studies. Today, any such absences (even if all school work is performed prior to leaving on trip) is considered truancy and generates an automatic F. That's not acceptable for AP students seeking entry into Ivy League schools. So far my grandchildren have skipped invitations to meet with two sets of World Leaders; attend a CIA briefing and journey to Cuba with a Canadian delegation. How many more enrichment opportunities will they miss by the time they graduate from Pali? The effectiveness of day to day administration has also slipped. E.g. on rainy days admin office failed to deliver messages to students (leaving them standing out in rain after school.)

I have sent 3 girls thru Pali. Certainly with the occasional Nobel/Pulitizer Prize winning teacher the qualtiy of education is great.Every race/ethnic group(some I've never even heard of) are represented. And while, apparently, every group pretty much stays to their own, they all get along and respect each other. Kids who are rude, nasty or try to bully are shunned by the general population. According to my kids(who are Black)there is a live-let-live environment here. While I wish I could have afforded a private all Black high school, this has been a very positive alternative. My kids have done well academically here. The vast majority of the kids matriculate into college. I have no regrets.

My son is in his 2nd year at this school, and is doing very well in his Honors and AP classes. He is a member of this school's marching band and also the jazz band, both of which have recently improved due to increased parent involvement, which the Music teacher welcomes.

My son has been in attendance at this school since Sept 2002. So far my son has been doing very well at this school academically. I believe that he could be challenged a bit more but, all is well. I have heard of minor incidents happening at the school but, none was severely injured. I believe that the school needs to have more extra curricular activities including music and a marching band to ward off any negativity. It is a known fact that musical instruments help childrens minds to stay focused.
