The Mattole Union School has lacked a guiding educational vision for some time. It almost maters less what the vision is than that someone in a leadership position has a strong sense about what the children need and has the creativity to make it happen. The Superintendent is almost entirely absent from the campus. The Principal is unusually kind and well-intended and can enable the implementation of a good program but does not seem to have the drive or vision to provide it herself. We have an historic opportunity now to bring about some much=needed change with the two teachers' positions being open. It is crucial that we hire well and avoid chosing the teacher who will appeal to the plowest common denominator or be an additional force for repression of a creative program.
