My kids are in 1st & 3rd grade at Ellerhorst. This is their first year there. Their previous schools were rated at 10 out of 10 on greatschools.org. Personally, I think Ellershorst deserves at 10! The new principal (Mr. Carr) is exceptional and has a phenomenal rapport with the kids. He warmly greets parents everyday during drop-off/pick-up. My favorite part of Ellerhorst is drop-off/pick-up. The norm for this school is: parents park their cars along the sidewalk outside the school's fence and walk their kids in. I'm part of the PTA which is super organized - parents there are committed to serving Ellerhorst. My husband is part of the Dad's Club - amazing dads eager to help with whatever is needed. The ladies at the front office are patient with parents & super helpful. My kids' teachers are exceptional - gifted at what they do. They welcome parent involvement & are sensitive to their students' needs. They are excellent leaders in their classrooms. The school's play yard faces a big hill full of trees - so beautiful. Beats a congested city-view of skyscrapers or a busy intersection. Ellerhorst is an excellent school! No complaints here.

My son started Kindergarten this year and we both really enjoy our experience at Ellerhorst. The newest principal, Mr. Carr, started in Aug/Sep 2014 and is very accessible and approachable. I called with a concern and he acted promptly with a solution. He also stands in front of the school each morning to greet students and parents, at which time he will answer any questions or concerns. There is a PTA, as well as a Dad's Club so parent involvement is high. Another thing we enjoy are the family activities. They school has family movie night, holiday festivities, and other events. His teacher ensures reading and writing at a high level, and I've seen his growth in just a couple of months. Parking and car access is very limited and too small for the size of students, but that's the least of my worries. So far, I'm very happy with the school and the education my son is receiving.

The new principal lacks understanding for special needs students. This school has 3 self contained special education classes and 1 resource program. The principal struggles to understand these students. Considering the amount of special needs students at this school the district should have provided a principal with more background in special education. There are several areas she needs to improve on. In general the principal is new and overwhelmed. She seems there to serve the district needs and not always the schools needs. Should would better serve a different school with different demographics. The PTA is fabulous. The teachers are fabulous. They hold the school together. On a side note the principal released one of the best teachers on campus. (a special ed teacher) No one knows why. The teacher is wonderful and now another school will get her and love her.

The 4 th grade teacher is amazing! She has a unique approach to conflict resolution which helps these kids at this very impressionable age. Since moving to this school my daughter has improved in her academics and I just can't say enough good things. The Principal engages with all of the children and she gets to know them. Im so we made the choice to move! Great school!!!

Ellerhorst has a new principal this year. She seems overwhelmed. Her interaction with staff, parents, and students is not what it was with the former principal. I agree that the RSP teacher should be meeting with students more often. I have had many parents come to me wishing the old principal was back because of her involvement in the school. Halloween wasnot the same without her.

I'd like to say that as of this year 2013 a great new principle has taken charge. She is very respondent to students and families. The school had wonderful parent involvement, which benefits because of the lack of school funding in this area. Unfortunately, the learning center teacher (Ms. Shea) is horrible. If you have a student in her class, make sure to keep up on what your child is doing (or not doing for that matter) I'm hoping they rid of this bad apple so children falling behind will actually excel.

Ellerhorst has gone done downhill. Their is not teacher consistency. The principle finally was asked to leave after years of being completely not proactive and allowing many problems to continue (like poor teachers). There is no new principle and there are several grades w/out a perm. teacher. Parent involvement is fantastic and is what keeps the school going.

We love Ellerhorst!!! My son attended Collins Elementary School for K, although he had an Amazing Teacher, Ellerhorst OUTSHINES by far!!! Academically advanced, Teachers are more enthusiastic and spirited. Their programs are far more advanced and just walking on campus makes you feel good! Ms. Smythe is Amazing for 1st grade and I definitely recommend anyone searching for a school to choose Ellerhorst if you are able! My youngest can not wait to attend this school either! Become a Rattler, you won't regret it :)

My 4th grade daughter has been attending Ellerhorst since Kindergarden and loves her school. The PTA really tries to reach out to support the teachers and students needs - their is a strong sense off committment from the parents to the school. The Dad's club hosts movie nights, a haunted hallway and various other events. The teachers are good and the overall vibe is a good one. I only wish they had 7th & 8th grade so I wouldn't have to think about her going elsewhere until High School

Ellerhorst has great teachers and the kids respond to the teacher. My grandson loves to go to Ellerhorst. He started there in the 1st grade and is in the sixth grade. He has loved every teacher he has had and I feel he has gotten as good an education as in any private school.

I love the family involved environment, programs & events the school has. I love the diversity of the school which can only properly prepare my grandson for the REAL world he will be contributing to and participating in one day. I love their teaching techniques they use at my grandson's school, which makes him want to learn. I worked in education for years, and take it very serious. I have a 2 year old grandson, the baby brother of my grandson who attends Ellerhorst, I hope & pray when he is of age, that he can also attend Ellerhorst.

I left a private school and was scared to go to any public school around West Contra Costa. But I was greatly pleased in the very first year. Each teacher really cared and the principal and office staff were absolutely accessible. The lack of money shows, but that is not the teachers' fault and the parent participation makes an impact.

Ellerhorst has a wonderful community of students, teachers, and families. There is an environment of respect and good behavior. We have a strong PTA of over 200 members that contribute to classroom supplies, field trips, sports equipment, and enrichment activities. The students wear uniforms at Ellerhorst and Ellerhorst spiritwear on Fridays.

Why do you love Ellerhorst Elementary School? Ellerhorst is a very great school i have two kids that have gone there, one now a 9th grader the other is in 5th.what i really appreciate is every teacher takes a lot of pride and time with there students even when they are struggling they will take time to help them and no matter what is going on in there busy schedules they always have a smile on there faces.Ellerhorst also has a great parent connection,i have never seen a school where so MANY parents are involved in every little aspect of there childs school from dads painting, building, crab & spaghetti feeds, movie nights.then you have the other aspects from stapeling or copying papers or book fairs,i know i missed a lot but everyone seems to pitch in together to make our school one of the BEST EVER.i have been there for 9 years and i have loved every minute of it.

When I moved to this town I drove around looking at the different schools. Ellerhorst struck me as being in just the right place physically. The way it was set back from the street, the classroom garden boxes with flowers growing in them, and the general layout was appealing. When I came to speak to the staff, the secretary was welcoming and helpful and I knew that I would want my children to come here. The families here work well together to work on projects to improve the school and especially the education and experience for the children. Volunteerism is more that a vague idea for the families of this school. My gut told me Ellerhorst would be the right place for my children. Seven years later my heart tells me it was the right choice.

Ellerhorst Elementary is its own little community. Families are welcome and encourages to participate in their childs learning. The teachers are caring and nurturing to the student, as well as the family. Sending our children to this school has been the best decision. I have heard it said that Ellerhorst is the closest thing to a private school as you can get without paying tuition.

This is a wonderful school for your children to attend. The teachers and Principal are very caring mentors. I would have to say that the PTA is the strongest asset to this school's community. They try and provide everything that the district has cut back on. The PTA has provided wonderful programs and events that are not availalbe at other schools. I wouldn't send my kids anywhere else!!!!

I would not recommend this school after the interaction I had with the front office staff there. While going to the office to seek information on transferring my child to start Kindergarten there I was not only ignored but also overlooked when others had come into the office for questions or help. I stood there waiting for 15 minutes before anyone even acknowledged me! The atmosphere there felt 'snobbish' and almost racist. High test scores or not - I'm glad my child did not go there. If they treated a prospective parent like that - how would they treat my child?

Contrary to the posts I see, I have not been satisfied with Ellerhorst experience. The principal at this school has been know to treat teachers unfairly and I would recommend a transfer to several nearby schools if possible. recommend.
