I think generally compared to the district this school is fine. But, if I were to manage this school and staff I would absolutely have a higher standard of performance. However, I do not believe that this can solely be attributed to the Principal alone. Working in Corporate America for some time now I have learned that you cannot always do what you want or would like to do. You have to consider priorities, politics, and ultimately, funding. I agree that this school teaches directly to the Test. I also strongly believe that they were somewhat forced into that line of teaching as they were in danger of being taken over by the government and/or being closed. Again, priorities were considered and the schools way of teaching reflects that. I do not agree that you are ignored if you are not an illegal alien who does not speak English. It is foolish to claim that injustice as I have always been able to pave my own way through the school and its administration. However, in my opinion, the school staff can be somewhat lazy. It is very off putting when my child's teacher expresses her angst over the Halloween parade and the extra time it takes. I think that is what is missing here; effort.

I agree with the last poster (2013) this school is terrible. It strictly teaches to the test and while the test scores are improving the quality of education is falling of a clift. The parents are ignored for the most part and when called upon are bullied into events with little notice in advance. The teachers and staff are well not exactly rude but they tend act as if questions regarding your child's time this as the enemy. They find every reason possible to take the day off leaving you to hire daycare and then they never assign homework. They never send your child's books home in fear that they may use them harshly. You only talk to the teach ONCE a year and once a month the principal will read the same news letter she sends out to you directly with no more information than what you could have read. She does not encourage you to ask questions and is dismissive of those who do. The teachers on the other hand run the gambit. So are as great as one might hoped they would be others are insecure and defensive. That's not just bad its awkward for any parent who feels something is wrong but doesnt know how to ask. This may have been a good school but is it not that any longer.

I pulled my child out of this school after one year. This school caters to the immigrant community and puts test scores above student growth. Because my child speaks english he was put in the back of the class and received little if any attention from the teacher. There is no PTA, and an english interpreter is needed for school functions such as back-to-school night. Every day begins with the pledge of allegiance at the front of the school, and not one of the parents has the decency or respect to salute the flag. The office staff is horrible! Unprofessional would not begin to describe the manner in which they conduct business. Rude, disrespectful and incompetent. It was as if having to speak english to me was a great inconvenience. All smiles for the spanish speaking parents though... If you are an undocumented immigrant with little/no respect for the tax payer funded educational opportunities being given to your child/children, than Heights Elementary is the place for you! If your child/children do not speak spanish, and you are looking to provide them with an opportunity to enrich their lives with a quality education in a friendly and safe envirornment, keep looking.

My two younger children of 5 have attended Heights since the beginning of school. I love the teachers and the staff. My daughter has went on to Hillview Junior High and is right on track. I have one daughter that will return to Heights next year this will be her 5th grade year. Thanks everyone!!

Having moved from San Francisco, where my kids were at a very small school for the creative arts-I have actually been very pleased with the school. The principal is a very strong leader, with a good relationship with the kids. The teachers have been great, and have total control of their classrooms. The behavior problems I experienced in San Francisco, do not seem to be a issue at Heights. They do not have a art/music program. But they have a real library, a PE and science teacher. Which we didn't have in San Francisco. My daughters 3rd grade teacher has done wonderful things with the GATE program. Due to limited english speaking the parental involvment is limited. The whole staff is top notch.
