ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

As a parent of a 7th, 8th, and 11th grader I love the school it has been a perfect fit for all of them and they are all so different in every way possible! I can say that the 7th grade teachers are awesome! I am speaking for Ms. Saletore and Mr. Frazer as I have seen a huge improvement! Both teachers are CGU graduates and really care for the students and make them feel safe and welcomed! The high school is awesome there is a couple of delays from staff with notices but the education children are given and the care that staff and teachers give make up for it! The reason why I did not rate this school a 5 is because of the leadership. At the middle school there is no designated person for discipline which is not OK!!! My students have came home and said many times they sit and waste time in the office and that the principal laughs and will send them back to class which makes them confused on why they were kicked out? BASICALLY THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING unless its really serious! But being disrespectful, not following dress code or basic student norms is OK!

This is a review of the brand new School of Arts 6-8 Middle School in the Pomona Arts Colony. Finally a school in Pomona where we can send our kids with pride (after previously going to a Claremont elementary school). The sixth grades teachers are awesome - both of them are recent Claremont Graduate University graduates - and full of energy, commitment and fresh ideas! The kids do dance and yoga for physical fitness, fun electives like eco crafts and useful courses like microsoft office, all amidst a project based learning environment. The kids who are lucky enough to find out about this place will be exposed to the arts (including digital), diversity and the real world as a result of attending here! The staff is very responsive and handles what few problems have cropped up swiftly so that the overall good vibe of the school is maintained. Next year the school will move to a new building (still in the heart of the Arts Colony) and hopefully add Spanish language and musical instruments/ band (which is the ONLY thing lacking this year, especially for an arts school). Love this school!

Many people who go to The School of Arts can say that they definitely don't enjoy it. Many students who are not artists come to the SAE as a second option so they don't have to attend continuation school. Most of the students aren't artists and only come here because they got expelled from their old school, or because they have friends who go there. This makes it hard for the very few students who actually want to learn about art. The SAE is trying to cram as many students as they can into the school. Some classes don't have enough chairs. Students constantly skip classes and the school doesn't even catch it. I can't tell you how many drug issues this school has as well.

This school is great... if you want to meet some great people. Want a good education? Choose a different school. Upon entering you will be greeted with a smile, yes. The staff is extremely nice and considerate. Once you send your child off into class, their chances of learning will dwindle. I was a student for three years and I was in no way challenged academically. I haven't done homework literally the entire time I was there nor I was I informed of any benchmark tests. The test prep for star tests is pathetic. I feel extremely ill-equipt for college and the challenges ahead of me. The arts section of the school is HIGHLY underfunded. The theatre department had little to no money to spend on their performences, percussion literally uses trashcans as their drums. Sure it may be intentional, but was it really necessary to spend money on a middle school? They should have perfected the campuses they already have rather than attempting to cram MORE kids in the school only to recieve more money from the state.

My school is amazing the amount of opportunities it has to offer is endless. The teacher's classroom management, content knowledge, and differentiated teaching were outstanding. They had the ability to connect and interact well with the students as and I felt like it kept us engaged throughout every lesson. The teachers taught me to be motivated and determined to achieve any goal. There is no doubt that I will continue to be a life long creative learner because that is what The SAE has taught me to be.

From the moment you step in you are welcomed by smiles the staff is articulate, intelligent, respectful, modest, and conscientious. They are well liked by the students, admin, and faculty. The SAE is motivated and determined school who will drive the students to achieve the goal of becoming life long learners who are driven by the pursuit of knowledge. There is no doubt that I recommend The SAE as a parent. The staff is extremely welcoming and will go out of their way to meet the students and parents satisfaction.

The school of arts is honestly, the best school in Pomona. The Teachers are amazing and friendly, they interact with their students and make the students feel comfortable. The staff is amazing as well! they will help you with whatever you need! if you need anything you can ask any one and they will help you! The SAE has an amazing staff! Ms. Irma, Ms. porsha, Ms. Melissa, Ms. Trish, and Marco! The counselor Ms. Canales is amazing! she helps you with everything you need, especially with college stuff. She will hunt you down and make you apply to colleges and scholarships. The counselor even takes her free time to help you. This school really cares about your education and their students. Everyone at the school is amazing and friendly. I just graduated and miss this school a lot! i never want to leave! The SAE is more than a school, it's a family. :)

I am currently a graduate of the SAE. I attended this school since my freshmen year back in 2009. I enjoyed my 4 years in this school. The teachers interact well with the students. There are not many students in each class so that helps students focus better. The teachers are nice and funny. They make the lessons engaging and not boring. There isn't many students so we have no problems with cliques and bullying. Everybody gets along with everybody. The SAE is like a family. This school is AMAZING! I love it and I will always be thankful for the opportunities the school has given me.

this school is a good fit for alot of students. the problem is the safety, the area is horrible and the security at the school is pretty much non existant. They also need to really provide a standard for the school. it appears that now they let anyone in. maybe it's about numbers, or even money. i would not recommend it for the serious college bond student.

To Prospective music students : I attended The SAE and I was amazed by the classes that they offered and the opportunities they give you. As a person who's passion is music, I was really excited. But as the months went by I began to notice how bad the music department truly is. The music teachers at the time I attended couldn't control our class. They lacked the ability to discipline kids and if you truly loved playing music this will bug you a lot. The art and dance department on the other hand are very good, the teachers and most of the kids take it seriously and have a lot of fun doing what they love. Some teachers I had were supportive and were willing to help as much as possible. The office is the place you will hate the most. The receptionist are very rude and unprofessional and they will leave you waiting and with the biggest headache of your life. I say this because its really important, they are INCREDIBLY unorganized. I could go on and on with examples. I gave this school a three star rating because I met a few people who changed my life and they taught me more in music than the school ever could, if not for them i would have regret attending the SAE.

Two of my sons attended this school, the staff and teachers are wonderful and extremely supportive. I can say that one of the best things about this school is how much they focus on balancing the arts and education. It is a requirement to apply to several colleges and be accepted to at least one of them in order for them to graduate. Their graduation rate is one of the highest I have ever heard of and that to me shows that they do care about your children's education!

I have always enjoyed student artwork and performances since I was a kid. I always wanted to be involved but due to income it was never a possibility. When I go married and decided to begin my own family I promised myself to always be in my children's education and to get them as involved as possible in school activities! With the a school like the SAE that wasn't very much needed. This school is amazing from education to performaces not once has it let me down. GREAT STAFF, TEACHERS, ADMIN, EVERYTHING! At no cost!

I love the SAE!!! The art program cannot be squashed, even during this trying economic time. Teachers pull the extra weight and go the extra mile to make sure that finances never jeopardise a students learning experience. The teachers and students really bring this school to life. The involvement and collaboration is truly special. Special recognition to Mr. Tree, Ms Swanlund, Mr. Vaudrey, Mrs. Roberts, and Mr. Butler. The SAE is much more than a school, it's a tight knit community.

When I was attending The SAE, the school did need little things here and there but then again what other school doesnt? No school is perfect. And if there was imagine how many successful people we would have in this country. Now, my point to this review is that this school has to be by far the best school I've ever been to. The teachers are really approachable, you can get help or get tutored, the electives this school has are like no other. The teachers really participate in the students learning, but if the student doesnt want the education then theres only so much the school can really do. The student could've been going to the worst school and if he/she wanted to learn something then they would've. It all really depends on the student, because this school is a project/hands on school. I definately recommend it.

Kudos to Math teacher, Mr, Vaudrey, but my daughter has learned nothing in Biology or Spanish. They moved her on to Spanish 2 and plan to place her with the same Science teacher... I will withdraw her if that, indeed, happens.

I find it hard to believe that a student going to school 2 hours a day is getting a proper education. Our student is getting straight A's but has missed many classes and still made Honors. I've checked her work and found many mistakes yet she receives an A or B+. We only hope her skills are there for college, and that she wasn't just given all lip service. The school needs higher standards and a curriculum that's not so easy.

As a graduate of The SAE, I am thankful I attended this school. The school is a small community of diverse, young people who want to become artists and entrepreneurs. At first glance, The SAE may not seem like much. There are no sports teams, the test scores aren't the greatest, and the school may seem like kickback and not an institution. It has many art classes from music to dance to visual art and creative writing. The curriculum takes a project based approach which sacrifices AP and IB courses for a real life study. Students are taught to ask then do through projects thus making themselves critical thinkers and problem solvers. College preparatory skills are incorporated throughout. I wholeheartedly recommend The SAE for any student who wants to have an alternative high school experience, loves the arts, and doesn't mind loosing out on AP's for making another family at school.

As a senior for the second graduating class at the SAE, I'm proud to reccommend this school. It is a school of hope and talent. Many may dispute over all of the imperfections of the school, however, how many of them comply with all of the necessities to have a great experience? Throughout my four years, I've seen attempts, reforms, arguments, protests, complaining, but most of all, compassion. It is not up to the school to provide full education, it is up to the student to do all they need to. Although the school does not have the best academic classes, there are available options to take classes outside of the school. I see people complain about the lack of education, but those are the same people who do not care about their education. We are high school students. We must admit our own responsibilities.

I am a senior at the sae and although I have had a few disagreements with the sae I can honestly say that the past 4 years there has been the best time of my life. I have met compassionate and dedicated teachers, have made great friends and have grown into a person I am proud of . Of course the sae isnt perfect -yet- but one of the best things about the sae is that it is just waiting to be molded and sculpted into a school that is perfect and I hope that the future students and parents of the sae take the initiative to make the sae into the ideal.

This school was designed for a student like my son; creative, introspective and artistically talented. Unfortunately, it seems the school is filled with kids who have failed everywhere else and SAE is a last stop. This really takes away from the experience of those who joined SAE for the artistic charter.

The SAE is a small relatively new school. They are not perfect, but they are trying hard to meet the needs of all of their students. The small school size helps everybody know everybody else. There are no major discipline problems even though the kids are given a lot of freedom. I highly recommend this school to any student who is interested in any form of the arts, also to students or parents who are attracted to a more family-like setting.

I have pulled my kid out of the school for two reasons. First, the teachers hand out packets and give the students little if any direction. Second, I think leadership should be replaced. It seems like the leadership is doing this for them rather than the improving students' lives. It is sad, my kid makes friends over two years, but has to leave, because she wants to be prepared for college.

The SAE promotes team learning and emphasizes waht seem to me to be an accelerated curriculm, They teach all requirements for high school, but they also teach about diversity, popularl culture and the arts. The teachers are liked by the students and they are accessible to them. This is a charter school. More should be like this. They need funds! this school should be a model for other schools with regard to their success in teaching about culture, diversity and the arts. My student is proud of his school. They Think outside of the box. This school is well maintained, artfully planned but needs funds desperately.

The SAE is only in its 3rd year and is becoming an impressive school. It is small, and therefore has some limitations in terms of curriculum offered, but it still manages to beat the other area schools with a stick when it comes to college preperatory academics and accessible arts programs.

Although this school is realitively new, it still needs a lot of improvement in leadership, fair & non-desciminatory dicipline, organization, and student/teacher accountability. They also need on-site counselors and a dean to specifically handle dicipline problems. The teachers/counselors need to learn to communicate with the parents of students not passing or not doing well in a timely manner, not at the end of the semester when nothing can be done to help the students. The teachers need to take more initiative in helping the students pass their classes and succeed in getting their high school diplomas. Too many students are not passing their classes and still being promoted to the next level, instead of being tutored, held back, made to repeat the classes, or helped. This school needs a lot of help!
