Started at Poway High at 84-85 and graduated in 89. Best years I had in school. Learned a lot and had a much better education compared to the education I would have gotten back in Mount Union, PA. Glad I had the opportunity to go to such a great school and meet the great staff at the time which taught me a lot.
i believe it to be a great school. i dont go there, but my cousin did. i havent heard of any problems about Poway High School. its counted as one of the ttop best schools in America. i would like to there, that is why im searching for a house near PHS.
Allow me to address this first: The Drug Problem. The drug problem in Poway has been highly exaggerated and is no way any worse than the drug problems that any other high school has encountered. The fact that we have had deaths relating to drugs does not mean that our problem is any worse. On another note, all teachers are very friendly and look to do the best for the students. Poway high has a generally very accepting environment. As a school and student body we do not tolerate any bullying when it comes to light. Student services is pretty helpful but it is mostly the students who are a very strong foundation in keeping everyone safe. Our teachers are excellent and really know their material and are very willing to help. The principal, Mr. Fisher, is one of the best principals ever. He is very supportive and always seeks out the best for the students. He engages a lot in school in order to help Poway be one of the best schools. Academic courses are challenging and rigorous although on the negative side they lack the variety of electives. Due to budget cuts the school was forced to cut down on course such as jewelry, woodshop, child development etc. Overall a great school.
We have been very happy with this school - all the teachers are very caring and the school has very good spirit/unity, etc. A word of advice though - be careful senior year and don't overload your child with too many AP classes esp the hard ones like Physics/Calc because the CA public colleges will not accept you with even one D in one semester even if you were an A student all along. Don't hesitate to get a tutor if needed. And make sure your child has at least two extracurricular activities that they can put down on college apps if they want to go to a UC. The CSUs don't ask about activities (only Cal Poly SLO and SDSU Honors). Good luck - this is a great school with a lot for your student to take advantage of!
We've actually only made it as far as the orientation process for incoming freshman. I have another child who attends San Pasqual High School, and I cannot begin to tell you how blown away I was when I attended the orientation at PHS! The physical structure of the campus is amazing. I couldn't believe the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, and the welcoming performance by the choir. My son is so exuberant to be afforded the opportunity to participate in several of the school's extracurricular programs, and for some reason he is choosing to study German (we preferred our children to study Spanish b/c of it's utility in Southern CA), but when we met the German instructor, we found that she lives up to her reputation! We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming school year.
this school has a druggie problem. there also is a bulling issue. i only know a couple people who like it there
New to this school, we could not be more impressed. Communication is top-notch. Teachers actually care.
We had three children attend this excellent high school. In addition to offering a wide array of AP classes, the extra-curricular options are varied. The marching band and orchestra programs are great--whether or not your student is particularly 'musical.' Our students were all UC-qualified. Today 2 have graduated with professional degrees and 1 remains in school.
We had 4 kids go through Poway High. Interdistrict transfer for the last one. This school is partially responsible for the success of my 4. An awesome experience of combined 16 years experience. Fischer is amazing, loved going to school there. Demanding academics, but teachers who care and are on top of your student. Councelors were great. Helped tremdously in the college process. Teachers who STILL keep in contact with my Kids. Sports were outstanding, and coaches some of my kids favorites (Champ), soccer, wrestling, volleyball, track.
POWAY High is an school with an excellent academic program. A majority of the kids are on a college prep course, unless they opt out. Baseball team & Wrestling & Basketball very competitive and very nepotistic. Parents are the most competitive group among the crowd. Most parents type 'A' business owners. Education top notch, your kid will be ready for college if they stay here. Parents must be involved, if so administration will notice and work with you. Campus rivals some colleges.
Teachers care. For the most part they are organized enough to show it. Administration is great about communication and organization. Sports a very very important. Good drama program.
Poway High School is an amazing high school. The principal Scott Fisher truly cares about the students and their success. The school stresses the importance of academics and is one of the top schools in the county and state. The wrestling and lacrosse programs at Poway are annual powerhouses with wrestling winning the last 24 CIF championships and bringing home 3 state titles in the last 17 years. All sports at Poway play at a high level. There is a multitude of extracurricular activites and anyone can find their place at Poway.
Academic programs are, for the most part, excellent. There are many extracurriculars, especially sports & band with large parental involvement. The downside is that it is a very upscal and high-pressure environment which can lead to some problems dealing with the adminstration/faculty if your student does not fit into a predetermined category.
Teachers care. The administration really communicates with parents and students. Sports are very important. It's somewhat expensive to send your child there because there are alot of 'add ons'. Good preparation for college. I think most students are college bound.
Great Academics and study body (although not much diversity in student population). Teachers very supportive with excellant email support.
Poway High has many programs for kids but like all schools in CA the cutbacks show. Many of the programs now require a fee to join. The school asks for donations from parents which helps. They have cut back on techers so class size has increased and reduced their couns. staff. They are in the process of remodeling the school and overall am pleased with Poway High.
This school has both academically and athletically encouraged and supported my son to develop and reach all of his potential. For this I am most grateful, and hopeful.
This is a students review. This school had great staff until westview stole some of their best teachers ( Kurth, McHeffy, Foster, Krenz, to name a few ) The remaining teachers are still great, but these teachers made the school. Poway's administration is the biggest drawback. There is a huge disconnect between them and the teachers and students, almost to the point that the teachers protect the students from the administrations ignorance. As a 2003 graduate, I still think that this is an excellent school, And I still come back to visit old teachers. This school allowed me to get into UCLA, and as far as college preparatory high schools are, Poway will help you out. For college advice though, rely on the teachers mostely, and don't beleive that the Titan Center is as great a resource as they try to sell it as.
