California School For The Deaf-Riverside 5

CSDR is one of the best schools a Deaf student can attend. They have complete language access because all of their peers and most of the staff are fluent in ASL. In addition to great academic curriculum opportunities students also get the chance to be involved in any extracurricular activity they want to. We have CIF competitive teams in football, volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, baseball, softball and wrestling. There are leadership opportunities available as students they can participate in class offices, and asbg. Our Deaf Academic Bowl team won the western regionals last year and have an undefeated team this year. In addition to core academics (English math history etc. ) we have a vibrant CTE department with fantastic real world programs such as construction technology, automotive, graphic design, video production and more. Approximately half of our students are residential students who spend the week here in newly built cottages that are beautiful, spacious and cozy at the same time. Students get an opportunity to sign 24/7 allowing for primary language development.

My son attended this school from K-12, and graduated. The average reading level is 4th grade. For my student, it held his interest until he hit middle school. In Middle and High school, his academics held little interest and he 'plateaued'. He does attend college now, but he is doing more remedial work, that was lacking at CSDR. Parental support is great in elementary classes, because of the teachers support...you don't receive encouragement from the staff in the Middle and High Schools, as one would hope to. Many students are residencial, and they are exposed to extra-curricular activities. Parental support is encouraged. ASL should be enforced in both home and school!
