Last year was my son's first year at SES. We were required to bring his previous report card which showed that he had taken Pre-algebra so he was placed in Algebra. On the first day of school the Assistant Principal, Mr. Bowman switched his classes around putting him in back in Pre-Algebra for some unknown reason. My son called me & I contacted him, he gave me some lame excuse why & I asked for the principal, Mr. Turkie had him switch him back to Algebra. That was the first day...later in the year I was noticing that he didn't seem to be learning any new material & teachers were not updating the grades on Zangle nor did they return my calls or emails about his progress. Also my don has a doctor's note that was not honored by his Algebra teacher, Mr. Lum would not allow him to use the restroom, he told him to finish his work first. When I emailed him I did not get a response until I contacted the principal. We all met in person and Mr. Lum had quite a poor condescending attitude. Ironically my son ended up not passing the finals after our interaction although prior to our interaction he was doing well. I asked for a copy of the test so that his tutor could review with him but no res

As an educator, I cannot recommend this school. The internal inexperience, lackadaisical attitude and dysfunction of the administration prevents the school from moving forward. AP, SAT and ACT scores reflect the lack of course content delivery to students. If you have or are a student who wishes to have a strong foothold in A-G requirements, this school would be a hinderance to a positive college experience for you. Safety and communication are also major concerns expressed by students and parents.

This school has become a low performing school! With the current principal there is no leadership know-how to improve. The students at SES are not exposed to the curriculum needed to help them excel in the areas of math and science. These are the two areas that have the weakest performance by students. Test scores are abysmal! Very poor model for student assistance. Teachers seem to believe they do not need to communicate with parents or attend meetings with parents. The school counselor was the only staff person willing to meet with me on numerious occasions. The teaching staff and admin do not return phone calls. The only assistance I received was from the school counselor and the attendance lady, both women were dynamic and honest. Thanks to them, I have found a much better school that is a perfect match for my daughter to further be able to explore her goals toward engineering. SES was just a really dead end for a bright, motivated kid. It would be a relief to see the school closed due to lack of performance and ongoing complaints regarding the administration.

Very poor leadership!!!! Poor quality of teachers! No respect for parents who ask questions. Test scores are falling! Math and science instruction and prep is nonexistent! I would not recommend this school as an educational option!!

I am so disappointed. This school is awful! The principal has no idea how to run a school. He treats parents with no respect. My son will be attending JFK this school year. My son was so disappointed in the engineering class. No one seemed to know what they were doing. The principal does not seem to have any experience in education. Just a very, very sad experience! Many unhappy parents. Communication and leadership are both terrible. The school is very, very broken! Schools should have principals who are actually educators. This individual clearly has no prior experience in an education system. This school is defiantly the worst school in the region!!

SES is a mess! I transfered my child out! The bullying problem is way out of control! Really bad administration! Teachers who have no idea how to teach! Science and math are the worse!

This school has a major problem with bullying! The principal is not well versed in any aspect of education. The administration has no idea how to deal with behavior issues. There is obviously no background in teaching or administration between the 2 of them. I pulled my child out so he can attend a real school. The academic quality is very low. This is a place to stay far away from!!!

This school is the worst school to possibly go to. First off the engineering, ha it's a joke to them, you can barely call this a school of engineering and sciences (and on a side note the science is the same as any other school so this is the school of engineering). The staff, terrible. Is your child missing a day of school and has a doctors note? Not excused. They never verify absences so beware getting a truency because you were in the hospital. Not even the students seem to care. Ask every student here what they want to be and you'll be told something completely different then a scientist or engineer. Also they force beliefs on your children, when I say this I mean global warming. And some people are skeptical about the topic, but they teach this to you as if it's a pure based fact. Fights and other things do start at this school, students cussing at teachers, destroying the restrooms and writing with markers. And for such a small school it is filthy. Beyond filthy at times. Only one language class, Spanish. Education you get? Pretty average. This isn't a special school, now if you want to go to a science or engineering school I advise to go somewhere else.

This school is not a good place to be at. The leadership is terrible. Staff members are extremely rude and students are unhappy. I would not recommend it to anyone

SES has a new principal and vice principal this year - and they are doing a great job. Yes, the Zangle program was not workig properly at the beginning of the year - but now I can get on and feel up to date as to how my child is doing in class. I believe this school has great potential and offers a strong engineering and sciences curriculum. They now offer GATE classes for middle school, and AP classes for highschool. I would like to see more parental involvement - that is my only gripe so far.

My son is currently an 8th grader at SES. We moved him from a K-8 to SES in hopes that it would better prepare him for high school. As soon as he started SES his grades began slipping. The Zangle program that was touted so much was not being used properly by the teachers, making it virtually impossible to keep on top of my sons slipping grades. This year is even worse- the teachers don't seem to care about their students grades, there has been virtually no communication from his teachers, and I am at the point where I will either be pulling him out to home school him, or put him in another school. I am that desparate to get him out of SES. We were also looking forward to the supposedly strong engineering program, and that has also fallen flat.

I am beginning to believe that this school is treating their kids like 2nd graders and not young adults... I was looking throught the parent handbook and it would say things like "Parents should be checking the assignment planners and monitoring homework daily" or "Their planners have a green and red side, they put the red side up if they don't understand the subject". I'm sorry but I thought this school was giving college credits to the high schoolers.... Personally I think they should make this school a middle school...

Small enough for your kids to get individualized attention. If you're kid loves science and math and you haven't bought in to the "GATE" business...you should look into SES. Great administrators, probably have the best principal in the district...can't complain about teachers at any school when new ones and old ones get transferred or pink slipped for no logical reason.

This school doesnt have very good teachers, or enough extra curricular classes. no sports, or any electives. i think that this school should really be just for middle school and not highschool because its just way to small to be both.- an 8th grader who is planning to leave the school next year

As with any SCUSD school there are certain limits, but the principal does a good job of working within those confines to attempt to offer students an excellent education. After school tutoring and clubs are available, most of the staff is approachable, the campus is great and the school community is one of high expectation. This school has much more to offer students in the SCUSD than any of the other schools I am familiar with. Students here are expected to achieve at higher levels and become professionals, going on to college and careers, rather than dead-end jobs, maybe trade school or college, as seems to be the expectations at other schools. The teachers are good about responding to parent emails, although I have had trouble with a few of them not communicating with me or my daughter. The office staff is friendly and helpful.

Principal leadership is horrible. She has a pre-determined decision no matter what you ask her, and its not usually to your interest. The school is worried on controlling the students instead of letting them learn. Most students go there because its just another high school, yet I assume staff think otherwise. This school shouldnt be on this website. The school keeps a councillor in the nurses office instead of a real nurse. And the councillor is fake. She offers no help what so ever to students that need it. Constant misleading promises. The school is horrible with trash left by students everywhere. The janitors and teachers expect students to clean classrooms before leaving them, even if it isnt theirs. Students are forced to have pre-determined electives, so theres no freedom to electives. Students in high school are treated like 5 year olds with the "count down method" to get them quiet. Id advice never to go there and just choose JFK, where i plan to transfer very soon. -A 10th grade student that has been there since it opened.

My son at the School of Engineering and Sciences tells me all the time about the wonderful experience he is having at this school. His favorite teacher, the math teacher, has been an incredible teacher exploring the interesting and unique ways of applying math into everyday lives and great ways to integrate previous math lessons into current and future equations and problems. His excellent personality and witty ways shows his students why math is important for our lives. My son also talks about how big of an influential figure the biology teacher has been. He teaches them how group projects and interactivity helps develop a better student. The overall teacher quality is amazing, for them not being the basic teacher and them actually being friendly and fun, making my son enjoy this school so much. The parent involvement is great, with a strong involvement with the PTSA, they make sure events are done smoothly and strongly. The student government is strong, my son says they are very efficient and are very strong role models, being funny, responsible and having a strong connection with the students. I highly recommend this school to any student. PS: The school goes up to grades 7-12.

This school has some of the best teachers in the state. The math programs are extremely rigorous and have a great learning experience The science teachers here are very professional and provide many great labs throughout the year. The English teachers know many different languages to help them interact better with students from different ethnic backgrounds. The testing scores are also above the average for any of the California schools. Most of the kids who left this school should have left before because they were unwanted.

SES has absolutely been the worst "high school" experience. We have been there since the day it opened and kept hoping it would get better. It has not. It is run like a junior high and not a high school. High schoolers are not the priority here. I would not advise going here if you are looking to continue on to a UC. Getting the required courses in has been next to impossible. Teachers say homework is not turned in when it is sitting in the pile in their box, counseling for high schoolers has been a joke and the administration just does not seem to care. Focus is more on controlling the student body rather than teaching them. And yet that can't seem to enforce something as simple as a dress code. A very disappointing experience.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.

About the tests


In 2012-2013 California used the California Standards Tests (CSTs) to test students in English language arts in grades 2 through 11; math in grades 2 through 7; science in grades 5, 8 and 10; and history-social science in grades 8 and 11. Middle and high school students also took subject-specific CSTs in math and science, depending on the course in which they were enrolled. The CSTs are standards-based tests, which means they measure how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of California. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the tests.

The different student groups are identified by the California Department of Education; if there are fewer than 10 students in a particular group in a school, the state doesn't report data for that group.

The CAHSEE is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined by the state of California.
